The tape recorder noise on a song about worrying that you've exhausted your creativity and you'll be forgotten once the glory days are over.
It's fragile. You can pull out a cassette's spool and wreck the recording forever. It's easily damaged by water and wear and tear. It needs patience and care. And yet— it's physical, it's real. You can hold it, take it in and out of a player, turn it this way and that. There's something precious about that— something unique to hold a person's voice in your hands.
Nowadays, it's a relic of a bygone age. Something to be treasured for nostalgia's sake. Taken out and dusted off to look at and remember. No longer useful, no longer shiny and new. It's easily exhausted— only so much recording time available— with nothing of the infinity of the internet. Played too much and it'll run out. It'll stop. It'll unspool.

"The cycle must end" and the cycle is going from being desperate for safety and anonymity in an industry that seeks to tear you apart for profit and encourages problematic parasocial relationships in fans, to being desperate to not be forgotten and to get your music and your voice out there and to continue creating despite not always being able to give people what they want from you.
"The cycle must end," and the cycle is going from being grateful for where fame has brought you and your art, to despairing at where fame has taken you and your art.
"The cycle must end," and the cycle is loving what you create but doubting who you are to the point of doubting your own art.
"The cycle must end," and the cycle is being a performer who sometimes cannot perform anymore but wants to nonetheless— and feels the pressure to nonetheless.

Okay so I am probably the last person to connect this, but please play along with me for a second
Compare these 2 audios:
Now am I crazy, or is that the same? Like, fill in the words that go with those notes, it's "I'm still full of the love you want"
Damocles is just missing those last 2 beats but it's the same thing, right???

God this album so far has been SO honest and revealed so much about Sleep token’s creator, about his fears and interests and problems. Why? What’s the purpose behind it? Why is he pulling away from metaphors and telling us straight up that he’s scared to open his front door, that he’s scared of being forgotten? That he’s a nerd who likes the Alien movies and plays world of Warcraft?
It feels personal on a level he’s never done before- which is almost laughable, considering the other music is pretty obviously the guy working through some situationship with a girl with mad crazy BPD or something. But it still felt like you could put the curtain over it of being lore, the metaphor of sleep and its worshippers. This album feels like there’s no god- despite the new costume and the war and the crazy background stuff happening, it’s about him. Like- HIM him. The real guy for some reason. Which is confusing because of how earnest he wants to not be known, but he clearly in some way DOES.
Maybe it’s because he openly acknowledges the audience and breaks the fourth wall? Says “you” not like an individual, but a collective of people. It has the same sensation of a wild animal meeting eyes with you, and you’re just frozen staring back all the sudden. Cause what do you do? The audience has been acknowledged, but they’re cursed to remain completely helpless and just do what they came here to do- watch. Cheer. Sing along. But there’s this odd new sensation of that the vessel SEES everybody there, or maybe he doesn’t anymore and it feels awful because of that.
Maybe the stage is a prison not just because of the expectations, but because he can’t see anybody anymore either. Can’t grab an audience member’s hand, or scream along with them because they’re nothing but shadows now, screaming shadows from below the stage. That honestly sounds like hell on earth.

We someone managed to survive another week, despite Vessel repeatedly dropping emotional neutron bombs on us in the form of singles. But it's also a good reminder for us to take care of ourselves, and each other.

It's very difficult to read from someone who only heard Take Me Back To The Eden that Sleep Token lost its identity after the release of Damocles.
I think the opposite, of course. And here I'm not saying that everyone has to love everything an artist they like does. But the three releases from Even in Arcadia follow the identity of Sleep Token, which has been working for almost ten years (next year is the 10th anniversary of the EP One).
If there is one thing that ST has remained faithful to during this time, it is its sound and composition identity.
Even in Arcadia comes across as a cathartic album. Speaking about Vessel's humanity, this also has to do with spirituality. When we relate to deities/entities, many of the conflicts are related to human feelings, the power or not to do something, the privileges we receive and fear losing and even when our feelings influence the deities.
Sleep Token's artistic proposal is this. To sing about the vicious cycles between gods and men. And talking about emotions is part of that.
