Season 3 of Picard taught us a few very important things:

1. The only ship and crew that matters is apparently the Enterprise.

2. The only family that matters is blood family. So forget the found ones along the way, and forget letting relationships change and grow.

3. The only family y'all need is Starfleet! So sign up, friends. We need people in the Astrometrics Lab! (Sorry, kids. I watched DS9. I know full well you can have a fulfilling story that involves Starfleet and the Federation but that doesn't make joining the cult endgame.)

4. The only stories that matter are the Borg. But we can't let them grow and change either.

5. That the only character who actually matters is Data.

6. Cross-generational understanding and friendship only goes so far and don't forget, kids, that you're being assimilated into darkness.

7. It's totally okay to ghost your girlfriend when the old flame you never made it work with shows up!

8. It's okay to never move on. Never grow. Never change. Never find new people in your life. Never fall in love with new people. Never let your life be changed from grief.

9. That canon actually and truly doesn't matter if the show runner hates it. (Okay, that's not really new.)

10. That this is why fanfic exists. That we as fans get to go in and find what works for us. That we can zero in on the few things we do connect to in a sea of awful and feel validated.

I loved this show. Picard reminded me why I love writing. Why I love worldbuilding. It reminded me that burnout is something you can recover from, and that you are allowed to take time and heal. Picard gave me Romulans that weren't monolithic and Borg that had changed.

S3 broke my heart, and that is why this is hard to let this go. M'Talas told me, directly, that he hoped they wouldn't lose me. Well, he did. I will never trust anything he writes, ever again. I hate that because I love these actors so much, and I know how hard the crew and the writers worked. I KNOW they love Trek. And I hope beyond hope that if there is a 25th Century Trek show that features Seven and Raffi and crew (and I hope there is!) that he won't be involved, because I know I can't trust him with these characters who mean so much to me.

If S3 worked for you, if you enjoyed it, I'm so glad. And you know what, there were things I really liked this season as well and I refuse to ignore them. If you got the closure you needed after Nemesis (cause that was a mess) then I hope your story is complete. But for me, and for a lot of people I know, we are left feeling ignored at best and erased overall. And the disjointed nature of how the plots came together (how did the Borg and the Changelings team up, for example and what the hell was up with the Red Lady/Romulan terrorist red herrings that were meaningless ... and ... and ... and ...) only just add to feeling left out of a joke that feels like they're telling it about you.

There are positives that came from this season: we've got a queer woman sitting in the Captain's chair on the bridge of the Enterprise. We got to see the reality that grief isn't linear (we did already see it, but it was nice to see that theme continue at least). Worf was amazing. The Mariposa medical team Beverly was working with gave us something beyond Starfleet Medical. Gates McFadden looked amazing. Jack didn't start out as a terrible character. The scenes with Laris in episode one were great. Shaw was a fascinating foil who you are supposed to hate that you love and you want him to do better.

But this season was TNG season 8. It wasn't Picard. And it just sucks that this is what I'm left with. And it's hard writing and loving someone like Laris, who so many people really do care about, but who so many people are also happy to forget because she was really, ever, just the housekeeper to them. (Even to many who liked her.)
