Lack of coordination over military deployment poses 'significant' challenge as immigration protests continue Jun 10, 2025 at 1:14 PM # Los Angeles Times ### Lack of coordination over military deployment poses 'significant' challenge as immigration protests continue Jun 10, 2025 at 1:14 PM [Los Angeles Times](https://apple.news/AhxIRlszvQMm5h5d898QCXA) On Tuesday morning, Kazumi Tsuji, owner of Millet Crepe in Little Tokyo, walked around her business and the surrounding buildings with a handful of burning sage. She passed by a scrawl of fresh graffiti spray-painted overnight. "It's to keep away the evil spirits," she said of the sage. "I'm OK with protests but setting fires, destroying businesses, all of that seems like people who just want to start chaos." While her shop was not damaged, around the corner what appeared to be masked teenagers smashed a glass door with a skateboard near the Shoe Palace. Property manager Frank Chavez showed a Times reporter footage of the individuals bashing a security camera around 10:30 p.m. Despite the damage nothing was missing from the building, he said.

The original edition of Emily Post’s Etiquette, published in 1922, had little to say about workplaces. Post advised women, who mostly filled secretarial roles at the time, to leave their personal lives at home (“Mood, temper, jealousy … are the chief flaws of the woman in business”) and to not waste much of an employer’s time freshening up. But in a single incisive line, Post distilled the central difficulty of office life: “It takes no small amount of will and self-control,” she wrote, “to get on with any constant companion under the daily friction of an enforced relationship that is unrelieved day after day, week after week.” Basically: Hell is other people.

Yet within the church, his reformist interpretation of church doctrine—“Who am I to judge?” he famously responded when asked to weigh in on gay priests—set off a polarizing struggle between modernists and traditionalists. So too has his radical approach to inclusivity that welcomed the non-ordained faithful, including members of the LGBTQ+ community and lay women, to sit with bishops and contribute their thoughts on issues of church doctrine in meetings called synods. It is this vision of synodality—the church as a listening one, instead of a top-down teaching one—that was at the core of Francis’ progressivism, and the biggest threat to traditionalists who seek stability by maintaining the power and influence of church leadership.

Supai has seen the worst of that vision. But the mules, unbothered by politics as they trod up and down the canyon, still carry with them a reminder of what America promised to be.

Often it’s a desire to make organisms that seem almost alien to us more relatable. Giving a species human characteristics can, in some cases, persuade us to protect them.

One Tuesday in April, I met Kim Vernon, a former Calvin Klein executive who bought a loft in the neighborhood in 1997. “I don’t want to be an old-lady bitch, but this is the pinnacle of what happened to this fucking neighborhood,” she said when we sat down at Bar Pisellino, which even at 2 p.m. was packed with young women ordering spritzes and pastries.

The tour began in clubs and ended in arenas; afterward, Idol and his then girlfriend moved to a place on Jones Street, without the street couch. (“I could afford some black furniture, cool stuff.”) When fans began lurking outside their building, they moved to an area near the West Side Highway, “because no one fucking came out there.” They left New York when “we kind of decided, ‘Why don’t we have a baby?’ I was trying to get over drug addiction; we were living a vampire existence.” In L.A., they could “start living in the daytime.” Eventually, they did. Idol’s young grandchildren inspired the song “I’m Your Hero” on his new album. “They only know me as Granddad,” he said. “Quite soon, they’ll go to school, and they won’t give a shit about Granddad.”
