Update Log: loosened spoiler warnings. Promoted more validity to Dessknight. Removed "Krismas Carol Theory" for the sake of conciseness, and removed the name idea "White Krismas Carol Theory" (it sucked bad). Improved readability. Added alt text. Added tear idea. Added discarded vessel possibility (saw a neat post on it). Went into further detail about the parallels between Kris and Noelle and Spamton. Completely revamped the theorizing around the caller's promise. Clarified Kris's nonbinary identity in the discussion on heteronormativity (author is nonbinary and does not want there to be confusion). Removed the idea that Carol could've been behind December's disappearance (it would be interesting but I don't think it's the case). Removed comments on Gerson's corrupted form (it might've been his statue). Edited Dess's "star motif" (it's a light motif). Removed some tags. Added tags to this reblog (woops)
Chapter 3 and 4 bring up two very important questions: who is the Roaring Knight, and who is the unknown caller?

I think Carol Knight Theory and December Knight Theory are the most likely, but there's another point to consider... Holiday Amalgamation Theory.
This theory will cover: why Carol is the one behind the phone calls, partially the Knight, and the reason Kris has no agency even when they're free of the player.
• The Knight's design
The knight's design is intentionally ambigious in an unobvious way. They have sharp antlers, look cervine and skeletal, have eyes on their hands and between their ribcage, have star-like features, and they're consumed in darkness. As seen above... there's this, thing that's 5 pixels big on one of their sprites? That could be a star, snowflake, tear, or even dust. Their weapon looks like a bat, and acts like a sword, but is not wielded like a katana. Following these design choices, they could be: December, Carol, Gaster, Papyrus, Rudy, Noelle, a Snowdrake or someone we haven't been introduced to yet. Perhaps they could even be someone using the discarded vessel as an avatar. When you fight the Knight, it's in a cold place with cold winds that start to come in fiercely before the crunch attack. Who else has a cold motif? The Holidays (and the Snowdrakes). When you defeat the Knight they fell everyone but Kris, knighting them. This implies that the Knight knows Kris in some way, which makes it more likely for them to be December / Carol (or even Gaster).
• The phone calls
The thing is, the bat DOES act like a sword. And you know who has a sword? Carol. Carol has a sword. The eyes on her hands and ribcage opening up to reveal an eye when she screeches represents her surveillance: the way she twists the narrative; keeps an eye on the town, Noelle, and Kris; and the way she keeps an eye on the Dark World. She has the skill to deftly wield the blade and she has the frigidness to accept what she's doing to other people. Not only that, but she also has antlers, SHARP antlers. She's implied and outright shown to be both figuratively and literally cool. And the Knight, is really cool. Carol and the Knight are also both serving. NOT going to elaborate on that.

It would make sense for Kris to have the phone number of a trusted adult in their life, a family friend. It would make sense for Kris to have contact with someone they already knew. Carol is a trusted family friend of the Dreemurrs.

The person on the phone doesn't want Susie to get December's guitar... because of the code. The way the person on the phone says they're coming over after Susie gets the guitar, then Carol shows up? The way she puts her hand on Kris's shoulder and says that THEY'RE welcome there any time? The way that, in the chapter 3 Knight boss fight, Kris feels a presence at their shoulder and behind them? The way Kris is terrified of being controlled within such a short timeframe even during the kind normal route? The way they're terrified of being used up, even during the normal route? It would only make sense.

The promise the caller mentions is curious. Who is the caller, what was the promise, when was it made, and why was it made? We see that, Noelle and Spamton are parallels to Kris. Noelle in the weird route is "used up" by the player, but even in the normal route it's possible she's being used like Kris is. Spamton changed when he made the deal and got the phone calls to be a Bigshot (likely about the prophecy and from Gaster), and when it led to his downfall he strived toward freedom from his set path, which ended badly. Kris is visibly disturbed by this because it's a reflection of their life and their desire to be free. They have the deal, they get the phone calls, they're being possessed, and they worry that if they speak up or try to break their strings they'll end up like Spamton. Which leads back to the fear of being used up.
It seems like something happened. Something that made Kris afraid of the bunker, the more troubled version of themself we control now, and what became the reason for the phone calls. The reason (besides the divorce) that Kris had to go to therapy (implied in one of the latest chapter's egg rooms). It appears that Kris is connected to the disappearance of December. There isn't a lot on HOW yet, but the bunker is definitely related. What if they both went searching in the bunker and only Kris came out? What if this is the driving force behind the conflict of the game?
The caller is almost certainly Carol, though it could also be Asgore or Gaster. Her showing up right after Kris tells the caller that Susie got the guitar wasn't a coincidence. She's also the most likely person to have made a promise with Kris and have been manipulating them. But what was the promise? This could be a stretch... but I think it's related to the license agreement on PC. It says "YOU ACCEPT EVERYTHING THAT WILL HAPPEN FROM NOW ON." What if this is the promise that Kris agreed to? What if they feel personally responsible for the disappearance of December, and are also being made to feel personally responsible for it? Maybe Carol blames them for it and is using their guilt to use them as a pawn in getting December back. Carol is a family friend of the Dreemurrs, kind of an aunt to Kris (maybe even the one who taught them to play the piano), and the mayor of the town. She has a lot of power over Kris and could easily be the one masterminding the suspicious ongoings around town and with Kris. After all, how would Kris be able to say no to the deal in this situation? I think it would have been made some time between the "Dessapearance" and the start of the game.
It appears that, even when Kris is free of the player, they are not only bound by their lack of a soul but also the tight strings around their arms. They are never truly free, or safe, and they cannot speak up about it in fear of endangering themself, others, or December. They have accepted their role as a pawn and have to actively stop the player from interfering. They gave up. It used to seem like the player was the pupputeer, but maybe things aren't so simple. Maybe in the normal route we are not only the soul behind the cage, but also the key to freedom.
• Carol, an emotiomally abusive parent who lost a child

Carol still seems to care about her family. She's implied to have been fun at times, and if she was all sharp edges, Rudy and Asgore wouldn't be as close to her. Though, to be fair, she does hide the full extent of her capabilities. Maybe December's disappearance has led to her taking on the mantle of the Knight, becoming more ruthless, and becoming more strict.
Noelle is TERRIFIED of Carol, visibly shaking in her presence, dreading a potential phone call from her, and rambling nervously when she gets there. From what we can see Noelle and Kris were expected to be together in a way that's reminiscent of the weird route (Kris is nonbinary, Noelle and Kris being together would not be heterosexual. But this makes Carol have amatonormative / heteronormative vibes, you know the way some parents go "aww they love each other they're going to get married some day"? It seems like the parents were acting like that when Noelle and Kris were friends by familial association). Carol actively goes against her daughter's wishes and punishes her for branching out, even before chapter 3 and 4 we've seen many signs that Noelle's mother might be abusive. She likely became icier after her eldest daughter went missing, wanting to protect Noelle from meeting the same fate. Considering how rebellious December was and what we know of Carol before the disappearance, I still think she was controlling and sharp about her kids, but it seems to have gotten a lot worse.
• The suspicious activity

It's clear that Carol is involved in the appearance of these dark fountains. What's interesting is that characters like Asgore appear to be involved too. What was that cork board in his shop about (and Kris's dislike of conspiracy boards)? Why was he talking about that stuff in the Holiday household's bathroom? How does he have a "black shard"? What was the final straw to the divorce between him in Toriel that can parallel him killing the human children in Undertale (or be something mundane to contradict it)? And... what's that Asgore prophecy panel and Gerson chapter 5 dialogue about? It seems that he's working with Carol to open up the dark fountains, with a specific intention. Maybe it's because he wants to get December back too. Maybe she's teaming up with the priest family and needs Gerson for her plan or maybe their goals are seperate. Regardless, it's all awfully suspicious. And what's that police sacrifice in the phone calls about? What did Asgore do when he was part of the police force? What does the unknown caller need Undyne for? Why does Undyne know the code to the bunker? Maybe that's why the unknown caller is trying to get rid of Undyne.

• Bonus.
Queen from chapter 2 is an admirer of the Knight, a parallel to Carol (King is a parallel to Susie's unknown parental figure and Queen is a parallel to Carol), and genuinely caring of Noelle despite beinf controlling and overbearing. Does this contribute to Carol being the knight??
• Holiday Amalgamation Theory

It seems like all the evidence points toward Carol Holiday as the true arbiter of the dark fountains. But how does it explain why the sword looks like a bat and doesn't act like a katana? How does it explain the corrupted visage of the Knight which doesn't resemble any other lightner? The star motif (Dess has a light motif)? Everything pointing to December being an extremely important part of the story and related to the Knight? But how could the Knight be December when it seems like the Knight has physical roots in Hometown and December is trapped in the code of the game? Why would December be helping the unknown caller as the Knight, even if it was her mother, even though she wants to be free?
What if the reason the Knight looks and kind of acts like December is because Carol has an object with her dust on it? What if the reason Carol is trying to open up all of these dark fountains is because she's trying to bring December back, like how the priest is trying to bring his father Gerson back? What the actions of the Knight are the actions of a mother devestated by the loss of her child and wanting to bring her back, like how she preserves everything sentimental to her and tries to keep it forever? Is this why Asgore is working with her? Is this why she's opening up all the dark fountains?
What if the only way to bring December back is to cause the Roaring?

A Day 2 Spoiler-Filled Guide To The Chapter 4 Secret Boss
• Throw enough money in this pond to split the waterfall, I used 1000 dark dollars

• Get the climbing gear from the pumpkin miniboss via natural progression
• Go through the waterfall until you find this, keep going until you find the music notes

• Keep exploring areas you couldn't previously access until you find all the music notes, they will appear above the piano so don't worry about tracking them
• When you play the music, the fireplace with the axe above it will open up
• Go there to fight the secret boss, Gerson

Tips for defeating Gerson:
• Don't use rude buster, just save TP until you can heal. Attacking heals and gathers TP, so do that every turn you're not healing
• His guarding attacks are the easiest because they follow the same pattern every time, save up health for when he uses his shell and hammer attacks
• The fight naturally ends at a certain point
• Use your best armor, maybe even some with magic up?
• Don't give up
Your reward for defeating him is this sick axe:

And another shadow crystal
