we as a people do not discuss renee & neil angst enough. nicky getting pissed off at allison and putting semi permanent black box dye into one of her fancy hair masks as a prank, but he fucks up and puts it in renee’s shampoo again. and renee is pretty well adjusted all things considered—she talks to betsy almost as much as andrew and has some pretty solid coping mechanisms for panic and PTSD—but there is something about seeing her old hair color on herself…Natalie’s hair color…

everyone is upset on her behalf. its renee. you don’t fuck with renee. allison squirts nair in nicky’s helmet. matt gives him a long disappointed look and dan gets chewed out by kevin during practice for slamming into nicky on the court. andrew doesn’t do anything—it’s not worth his time—but when he catches her angry crying during their next sparring match, he does her the favor of being quiet and wordlessly chucks a hand towel at her.

if it was almost anyone else, neil would shrug and move on. it was a mistake and a stupid prank that only comes at the cost of vanity. neil’s long past caring for that. and unlike the others, he’s not upset because it’s renee, the sweetheart of the foxes. renee is fine. he loves her as much as any of them and would kill without hesitation for her. but they’re not close.

but he knows what this means. he knows how renee’s heart is swallowing a beat each time she catches a dark strand falling in her face. he knows the difference between preserving vanity and sanity. he knows she made a choice to start over—and knows how that choice being undermined just begs to break any scaffolding of healing.

he doesn’t want to talk to her about it. he wants to do what andrew does and leave a new bandana in her locker to cover her hair. renee doesn’t let him. she waits for him after practice, long after everyone has left and he changes in peace. (she nods to andrew, who lets her stay and strolls ahead to the maserati.) she tells him that she knows it was him, and knows what it means, and she is grateful.

neil squirms in his own skin. he’s never quite sure how to talk to her. but she’s gentle and direct and says she’s never quite understood why neil didn’t dye his hair back to brown, but she hopes someday she can be as at peace with it as he is. and that’s what breaks the ice. neil tells her he didn’t get to choose—not his natural color, not the constant need to dye it, not jean’s hands holding his skull under a faucet as he washed out the last safeguard against his past. he chose to run, though, for a long time. and now he’s choosing to stay. he says he used to think she was running too and judged her for it. she laughs at his candor. she gets why andrew likes him so much. renee says she is. and then neil cuts her off and says he knows, but the difference is that she’s running toward something, not away.

she tells him she’d like to hug him and he doesn’t shy away. she knows the dye will fade in a few months—that she can re-bleach it or cut it off or whatever. it’s just hair. but this…this isn’t just a square of orange cotton cloth.

foxes live with small, invisible miseries. neil saw hers and gave her a bandage. she doesn’t take that for granted.
