Quake News from Elsewhere -is Fumio Obata's comic book reportage about the triple disaster which devastated the Northern coastal towns and cities of Japan in March 2011. In early 2012 Fumio was commissioned by a renowned Italian news magazine INTERNAZONALE to do short cartoon strips about the event.Upon visiting the regions he at once decided to make continuous reportage over how the people survived it and how they reconstruct their livelihoods, coping with the nuclear accident in Fukushima. Most of the stories have been published so far by INTERNAZONALE on and off over the course of 2 years.

Video
The video shows the very ground of the affected areas in the south of Japan, Kyusyuu island where 5.5m of rain fell in just 6 hours on 7th July 2017 .This type of unprecedented and trenchous weather is becoming a norm recently and people are expected to deal with the damages without much of support for volunteers who tire themselves for the relief work.

https://www.facebook.com/miyamanoyuki/?pnref=story

A reportage about the aftermath of Fukushima disaster that was published with the Italian news magazine Internazionale in April 2016. This is about Mr Norio Kimura, a young father from Okuma town of Fukushima prefecture that is still within so called ‘Difficult to Return Zone’(roughly 10km from the damaged plant). Mr Kimura lost his father, wife and youngest daughter by the tsunami in 2011 and the body of his daughter, Yūna, couldn’t’t be discovered. He continued the search pretty much on his own, that went on for 5 years and 9 months and finally found the remining of his daughter in his home town that is still too radioactive to live. Mr Kimura’s search is still to continue.

Some photos from the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. I was again struck by the immense damage natural disasters can do to cities and towns of a developed country such as Japan, and how difficult it is to reconstruct the broken communities and revive local economy. On surface we can make things look fixed but anyone’s livelihood is based upon a synthetic of different things such as local pay rate, jobs, and human relations.

Remember, Japan was inflicted by another series strong earthquakes in 2016? On14th and 16th April there were M6.5 and M7.3 shakes rattled the KUMAMOTO prefecture, South island of Kyuushu, Japan. I worked there as a volunteer and made strong connection with Green Coop Federation which is heavily involved with humanitarian relief work in the region. The Federation is the members association for Japan Consumers Cooperative ( Japanese Co-op). And they commissioned me to make posters and pamphlets about their works in cartoon style.

I was interviewed by one of the national newspapers in Japan, Asahi Shinbun regarding my current comic book project over the aftermath of the tsunami and nuclear accident of 2011.It was during my last visit in April this year to Tokuun Tanaka the chief priest at Dokeiji, a Buddhist temple in Odaka area, previously within the vacation zone. http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201606110015.html

Some lessons in terms of how fragile what we use everyday. Cars need lots of things to just run it. Not just petrol, but they need roads too.

Ishinomaki is a port city where more than 4,100 residents either died or went missing by the 2011′s tsunami.I made a good bond there with a local NGO which invented a new car sharing technique to solve transport shortage after numerous cars were destroyed. This strips is a commissioned piece by the same NGO informing their particular ‘car sharing’ methods designed to deal with emergency and disaster.I can only show the first 2 pages.
