okay this is such an itty bitty headcanon but im a sucker for The Details

Rio does know how to braid hair and tie fancy bows/knots, granted nowadays she's a little rusty at it. Back when she was much younger she wanted to learn how to be more elegant like Lee, before realizing that being so wasn't much of her style.

Rio, seated across from her with her knees close to her chest and arms wrapped around them, awkwardly stares at the older for a brief moment. Quickly, the girl straightens up her posture and, now seated normally, she clears her throat. There. Now she looks more 'professional'. The pet 'rat' on her shoulder readjusts from the turbulence, small mechanical whirs can be heard while it moved from Rio's left shoulder to her right.

"Just turned 16.", Rio specifies as if it would make any difference to excuse her foul language, pointing her phone at Asuka then swiftly back close to herself. The sound of dangling phone charms accompany the movement. Notably, one was of the Violet Systems company logo.

"If my boss ain't in earshot, I can get more loose with my language." She explained further, "But, fine, I'll ease up on it."

"Anyways, trying to relate here.", her nonchalant voice wavered, almost losing her composure from the sheer awkward nature. It's painful to watch, even for Byte, who simply looks away, ears lowered with a concerned chirp to which she takes note of by glancing at it.

"Name's Rio.", Rio pauses, "I work here. N-Not Yggdrasil. Violet Systems. Roboticist and computer programmer.", and hacker who collects information, but there was no way in hell she was going to give that away.

Rio huffs, almost hesitating to answer his question. To be scared meant that she wasn't in control, to not be in control meant she was powerless. A thought process learned far too young while on the streets that never seemed to die down, sometimes worsened the farther she went down rabbit holes that would've been better off undiscovered. Ones that would've prevented her from having such a target on her back and spared her the paranoia, constantly questioning how long would her family even be able to protect her and Byte, let alone herself.

Oh, how knowledge can be a double-edged sword.

Her shoulders tense up, preparing herself to be straight up and honest with him, no lighthearted jokes to shrug it off like it's no big deal. Because it wasn't. She's tired. a tired no amount of sleep could ever fix.

Rio defeatedly nods yes to his query.

"Too damn much.", Rio admits, unknowingly tightening her grip on her arms, "And... I hate it. I hate being scared all the time like I'm the same defenseless little kid back then."

Lars was usually accompanied by adults. Rio’s presence on the airship served to remind him of the human toll of war. Civilians weren’t trained soldiers who were able to accept the realities and bloodshed of active combat. The casualty count, the missile strikes, the carnage…these were all things no teenager should have to witness or endure.

“Hmm…” Fear, like any emotion, had its purpose. Lars rarely found himself in a constant state of it, but much of that came down to experience.

“It depends on what’s causing that fear, Rio,” a fear of heights for example, would probably be unbearable considering how high up they were.

“Are you always scared?”

"Huh...", Rio's brows subtly raise in thought. Folding her arms, a habit that reflected her defensiveness, her fear of showing vulnerability.

Even if they don't outwardly show it...

Those last words stuck with her, a bit of validation that the teen didn't realize she needed until she heard it. Downcast eyes that were often always looking at something else, and usually accompanied by a witty remark, now look up at him with barely masked uncertainty disguised as casual talk.

"Sooo, that probably means that you and everyone else are always scared right?"

The masked jerboa mockingly whines, descending back onto the ground acting disappointed. She hums in thought while lolling her upper half back and forth, weighing her options.

"Hmmm... I'll pick the secret third option: I get to have fun playing with you and theeen I can wreck the place into iiitty bitty pieces after I dismantle you!", she giggles maniacally, tossing around with a singular ruby-shaded cube in her hands.

"How's that sound, eh? Eh?", her body leans more and more to the side while feigning the innocence of a naïve child, standing back straight with unnerving speed.
