my biggest proof for byler is that out of all his friends that will could’ve had a crush on, it’s mike. and out of all his friends who have girlfriends, it’s mike who struggles the most with having one.

if the duffers wanted to write an unrequited love story, they could’ve make will fall in love with lucas, but have him rejected early on in season two or three when he started dating max, because he and max are solid.

they could’ve had will fall in love with dustin, then get rejected in season three when he got suzie. there were so many moments they could’ve made out of will not believing suzie was real only to get his heart smashed when he found out. that would’ve been absolute cinema and heartbreaking.

there were so many other roads to take and so many opportunities for the duffers to have will be rejected in the earlier seasons and get a nice heart-to-heart (“we’re just friends…best friends”), but they didn’t.

if byler weren’t canon, they wouldn’t have made will like mike specifically. if they wanted a healthy straight relationship to beat a gay, unrequited crush, they had two chances, and they didn’t take them. because that is NOT the story the duffers want to tell.
