A detail of ‘The Clippership Sir Lancelot passing South Foreland’, by Maarten Platje, 2025
The clipper Sir Lancelot (1865) was considered the slightly larger sister ship of the famous Ariel and was used on the route to China. In the 1880s she was trading between Europe and India. In 1895 she was sold to Persian owners and in the same year she was lost in a cyclone off the Sand Heads, Calcutta, deeply laden with salt from the Red Sea.
