Good lord thank god for my sister catching the item descriptions on the international orders
I nearly sent out ten packages to Europe labeled as “Explosive Material Hazard”
Updated them all to say “Enamel Pin” instead

My family had an NES when I was growing up and my dad liked it too. We’d go to thrift stores and grab random cartridges some weekends. One of the games was called Lolo and it was like 99 floors. You were a little blue guy, Lolo. Utterly harmless and trying to navigate the many traps and trials of the tower.
As a family we’d been working through the levels, slowly ascending the tower together and every so often the game would give a code to skip to an upper floor and lock in our progress.
One day it was just my dad and I at home. I was in trouble for some childish misdeed and supposed to be staying in my room, but my dad was playing Lolo so I snuck out of my room to watch. I moved soundlessly over the squeaky wooden hallway and posted to behind the couch where I could still see the TV. We’d been stuck on a specific floor and we knew it was the one that would drop a code so we could skip back to this level. He was at it for a while.
I watched him do a risky maneuver, thinking to myself that it was a pretty ballsy strategy as he only had one life left.
But to our mutual surprise it worked; he succeeded in clearing the floor. In his euphoria he jumped up and whooped, running to my room, so full of joy he needed to share the moment with me. I froze and watched him run down the hall. He looked into my room then looked around in puzzlement, finally spotting me behind the couch.
We stared at each other. I waited to see if I was in more trouble but instead he exclaimed, “You saw me! I did it!”
I jumped up to celebrate with him and we recommenced playing together, excited to see the new level he’d revealed. My earlier misdeed and the sin of sneaking away from the first punishment were both washed away in jubilation. He was just too happy he’d been witnessed.

random anecdote for father's day: one time during a long car ride my dad asked me, "you're familiar with Murphy's Law, right?" and i was like "isn't that the one about how anything that can go wrong will go wrong?" and he said "yeah, exactly" and i said "why do you ask?" and he went "well, have you heard of Cole's Law?" and i said "no, actually, what's that?" and he said "it's mostly lettuce and carrots with a little dressing mixed in"

friend of mine was sleeping whilst another friend and i were talking about nonsense. at some point we were talking about how trains honked anyway in the no horn zone that we had both lived in at one point. either without waking up, or waking up so briefly as to not disturb her sleep, our sleeping friend turned over to face us and solemnly intoned "Trains are required by federal law to sound the horn three times at a grade crossing". then she was gone again. we shook her gently- no response, out cold. she didn't remember it in the morning.

at the fishing tournament yesterday btw there were age categories bc it was all-inclusive and we didn't want like 60 year old anglers competing against 4 years olds obviously.
so anyway this 14 year old boy entered in the 11-15 age bracket and he saw a huge fish in the water he became absolutely determined to catch. i don't think he even wanted to win anymore. he just wanted that fish specifically. but his line wasn't strong enough for such a big fish and didn't have the ideal bait.
enter: two 15 year old boys who didn't know him. they saw what he was trying to do, and they were clearly experienced anglers, and they got involved in the chase. they got the right bait and the three of them spent hours with their lines in the water, until the first boy finally hooked the fish. they talked him through the slow challenge of endurance. he couldn't reel in all at once because the fish was too heavy for his line and it'd break.
he finally reeled it in, but they didn't have a net. it took all three of them, lying on their bellies, six hands on the fish, to pull it out of the water. they put it in a big bucket of water for the weigh-in (we just subtracted the bucket+water weight after), gave their new friend careful instruction on how to handle the fish so he could pose for a hasty photo without injuring its spine, and then carefully placed the fish back in the water.
in the end, he won first place in his age bracket. one of the other boys who helped him tied for second with a 12-year-old competitor, and he gave her the trophy.
then during the drawing, where participants won prizes randomly if I pulled their name from a box, I happened to pull his name and he got a great prize so it all came around.
Idk. the teamwork. the serendipity of friendship. the graciousness. the consideration for the fish. Just some things that made me happy.
