Most embarrassing part about being from a country colonized by Portugal is that they did all that pillaging, slavery, and murder only to STILL be broke!!! Girl wtf!!! It’s like watching a person who can’t drive steal your car. Come on

I still don't believe that a movie made by a French director who said it's not necessary to learn about the Mexican culture because he knows "enough already" (he's not fluent nor in English or Spanish) actually won over a movie about a true story in Brazil's military dictatorship. A movie that really had the guts to show the violence, lack of humanity and insanity of that period

"It's funny because I know french culture. I know russian culture, german culture, italian culture, I know the american culture...But they don’t know the Brazilian culture. And sometimes I feel bad for the people who have never read Machado de Assis, who don't know Eça de Queiroz. [...]How can I talk to someone who doesn't know who Nelson Rodrigues is? [...]At the same time that Brazil has this inferiority complex due to our lack of communication with the world, Brazilians feel sorry for the world not knowing what we know. So when someone crosses the border and takes something that is personal to us abroad, it's us saying "look at how rich and beautiful we are!" and it is this kind of feeling of national pride."

I think you guys will never understand how important for brazilians this victory is. We live in a country where our art and culture is dragged down all the fucking time, our artists are full of talent but so robbed of opportunities. I'm still here is a movie about violence, pain and memory because our people is always forced to forget the absurds we went trough. Fernanda won this award for a entire nation. Thank you Fernanda, Salton Mello and Walter Salles for this movie. You made history.

fernanda torres' victory is so important to brazil and latin america in general. not only because we're constantly looked upon and not even considerated for internationally known prizes and premiations, but also because of the part that made her get the trophy.
"ainda estou aqui"/"i'm still here" is a movie about a family's suffering during the 20+ years long brazilian dictatorship. it is a reminder of all the sadness people went through not only in brazil but in the majority of latin countries - that had similar dictatorships too. it is a reminder that the guilty, who have tortured and k*lled, are still free. it is a reminder that it can never happen again.
and, as fernanda said herself, her win is the prove that, fortunately, art can endure.
pra nós nunca esquecermos. ditadura nunca mais

the way fernanda torres said her chances of winning were zero, not because of a lack of talent, but because where you’re born determines whether or not you’re deemed deserving of recognition. how she spoke of our country’s frustration with cultural isolation, yet also expressed a kind of pity that they don’t know us. how, despite it all, talent prevailed because she is just that good. and how her mother didn’t win this same award 25 years ago because the world wasn’t ready to admit that a brazilian woman was the best. and today, she dedicated the award to her mother.

After seeing that shitty frenchamerican movie about mexicans without mexicans in the main cast winning so many awards im glad Brazil winned this! I dont even care about oscar, this is HUGE!!!!
"I'm still here" isnt just a random film. It is about the military dictatorship, which on the contrary of countries like Argentina and Chile, Brazil didnt punished most part of the people that did and colaborated for all the deaths, crimes and opressions, and many families still and probably wont ever know where their family members were "buried/disposed".
And not only historic value and resistance against military coups (which are a constant threat with the rise of extreme right in Brazilian politics and military), this is a win for the lack of support and acknowledgement brazilian cinema has, by our own government and by gringos, that keep on pretending the world is just hollywood and some few european countries
My position is that gringo awards arent the reason we make films. But it does help a lot. It attracts investment, international film companies, something continents like latin america doesnt have compared to japan, korea, china, india and european countries own independent film and shows productions, so much they even have prestigious relevant cinema and tv show awards season.
