The Defiant has just reclaimed the station. Dukat has spent weeks in Sisko's office, obsessing about him, but is now forced to leave. His daughter has just died. He held her in his arms.

Know what else he was holding at the time?

Benjamin Sisko's baseball. The one he left on the station, a signal of his return. So far all of this is canon. But why did Dukat take the baseball? Why, in canon, did he care to hand it over, while mad with grief over his daughter's death?

Because he doesn't know what baseball is. He thinks it's Sisko's egg.

In this fic I ask what would happen if Dukat made it off the station - alone except for the egg. He doesn't go completely catatonic in his daughter's absence, but this is not a sane man. He obsesses. The egg doesn't grow, doesn't move. He worries something must be wrong with it. He needs a doctor - one who understands human biology. He kidnaps Julian (who was on his way to a medical conference at the time).

The fic plays out largely similar to Waltz, with Julian in Sisko's place, trying to placate a madman long enough to keep himself alive. For days, he "heals" the "egg", getting so deep into character he almost convinces himself there's an actual life at stake here.

Eventually Julian convinces Dukat that the only way the "hatchling" will survive is if he can get it back to its real father. Manages to convince him that Ziyal wouldn't have wanted revenge, and that he doesn't want another dead innocent. For the sake of the egg, Dukat relents, and sends Julian back to DS9 with his precious cargo.

Sisko throws his baseball into the air the moment Julian returns it to him.

Julian wishes he could explain why he snatches it out of the air.
