Michael Sheen urges greater support for underrepresented talent
Michael Sheen has made a call to action for greater long-term support for people entering the creative industries from underrepresented backgrounds.
Speaking in conversation with Jane Tranter for the opening session of this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival, Sheen reflected on the opportunities available to him to get into acting as a young person from Port Talbot, an “old steel town” in Wales, and how his experience compared with someone from a similar background trying to break into the industry today.
The Good Omens star lamented the lack of formal structures in place for young actors and talent entering the arts from underrepresented backgrounds, pointing out that many who come into the industry do so “quite late”.
“Growing up [we had] school plays… then there was a youth theatre that was funded through the education department of the county council, and then I got into drama to go to drama school,” he recounted.
“Just to get to the point of going to drama school, all of those things had to be in place. All of those things are gone, essentially - I think I was the last year to get a grant to go to drama school in my area.”
Sheen also discussed the importance of providing opportunities to talent from outside of London and ensuring those from underrepresented backgrounds are able to tell their own stories, urging greater support to nurture the next generation of creative talent.
“Not every writer is suddenly going to be a Jack Thorne or a James Graham, you need to put the work in… and you need to make sure you put it in the right places so that the chances of people coming from areas that maybe don’t get hugely ‘tellable’ stories is increased.
“It really requires deep, long-term work that really explores what other things are getting in the way [of progress],” he stated.
To help counter this, Sheen, who moved back to Port Talbot from Hollywood in 2018, has set up The Welsh Net, a programme in Wales that recognises and fosters young acting talent. He will use his new theatre company Welsh National Theatre, which he is funding, as an incubator for the programme.
He likened the initiative to a football scout who seeks out talented young footballers.
“I’ve used that model to try and build something that we’re calling The Welsh Net, which is about having culture scouts throughout Wales, embedded in their communities watching things - whether it’s professional shows, panel shows, youth shows, school shows, whatever it might be – and looking out for talent, and then reporting back to us regularly.
“Then we look at trying to work out what the next step might be for those people to develop them, whether they’re five, six, seven, eight-years-old or those aged up to 50 or 60,” he explained.
“If that next step exists, then I use the engine of the Welsh National Theatre… to make [it happen] for them, and if it doesn’t exist, we look at how we can create that next step. We build pathways that lead not just to the Welsh National Theatre but allows Wales as a nation to develop those pathways for itself.”

2nd Place: Wolf Hall (2015-24, iPlayer)
The BBC’s adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s fictionalised biography of Thomas Cromwell stars Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis and Claire Foy. The acclaimed actor Michael Sheen praised the drama, directed by Peter Kosminsky, for its “brilliant storytelling”.
He said: “Everyone is at the top of their game — performances, direction, cinematography, design, music, editing. It brought the past vividly to life and made it throb with resonance for now. Smart, surprising, challenging, disturbing, beautiful. It took huge risks and made them seem effortless. Taking something that has already worked brilliantly in a different medium and finding a new visual and storytelling language for it is a huge challenge and it triumphed. I think it is a landmark production and will inspire and influence every area of TV drama moving forward.”
