“You’re gonna go far, kiddo.”
Ken Weber had always said this to his eldest daughter since before she could remember, and still would to this day. Quinn would smile up at her father, lift the binoculars back up to her head and stare out at the giraffes grazing nearby in their natural habitat.
Ken and Jackie Weber were renowned zoologists, and Quinn spent much of her childhood being homeschooled and traveling with them-- until news of a new baby sister came along. After that, they decided to slow down and move to Portland, Oregon. From there, Quinn and her new baby sister Serena would spend all their free time at the local zoo, watching their parents work with all the exotic animals the zoo had to offer. By the age of 12, Quinn found herself volunteering at the zoo feeding lion and tiger cubs rather than doing mundane activities such as going to the mall.
It wasn’t until her travel year that things began to change for Quinn. With all those years of homeschooling, she graduated early, and began college at the ripe age of sixteen. The plan was to spend a year abroad in London, maybe Paris. “It’s for the experience,” her father would always say. He was always big on experiences. Quinn had always thought she had enough experience for a lifetime already. Guess not.
You’re gonna go far, kiddo.
Quinn chose London.
Two months go by. Aged 17. Quinn was finally becoming fully adjusted to life without her family in a foreign country, and was loving it. Then she met Julien. Julien King, in all his brooding, muscled glory, sitting across the bar from her. She could feel his gaze searing through her, gluing her to her seat. Quinn never realized her beauty. She was always told she had a radiant smile, and she would always roll her eyes at that. These guys are full of shit, she would think. But sitting there, allowing Julien King to buy her a martini that night was what sparked a fire that would take years to extinguish.
You’re gonna go far, kiddo.
A whirlwind of six years spiraled by after that. Things were fucking great. It was like a dream. Quinn was the happiest she had been in a while. She’d write her parents. Serena. Keira. Her little brother, Cole. She would tell them that she was staying in London. She had no plans to come home yet. Not anytime soon. Julien was her prince charming. He was the guy that she always dreamed of. The guy that every girl would dream of. He was something out of a movie for her. A dream. Quinn was on cloud nine. That is, until cloud nine turned into a hurricane.
The relationship became toxic all too quickly. They were on. They were off. Their relationship status changed so frequently that no one could even keep up anymore. He would disappear and she would worry. She would go out, and he would follow her. Nothing one did would complement the other anymore. It became a shitshow. A shitshow that went on for two years before Quinn decided to finally pack up and leave. She would go back to Portland. She would go back to see her family. Cole must be so tall now. It’s been a few years.
You’re gonna go far, kiddo.
After a few months of her scraping up the remaining pieces of her life together, a new opportunity presented itself in the form of Creative Director at Teen Vogue. The job was in LA. Was she ready to up and move again? “You can’t go through life without having any real experiences,” her father had said.
Fuck it.
Creative Director of Teen Vogue. The job required her to travel frequently between New York and Los Angeles for weeks at a time. In New York, she met Elliot Moore. This Australian stud on an extended holiday that had a very close relationship with his dog, Bruno. Quinn found it endearing. He was fucking adorable and hot at the same time. Those tattoos. That smile. His personality. He was the total opposite of him. It was like a breath of fresh air after having been submerged underwater for far too long. In him, she found comfort, and finally experienced what it was like to have love—to be in love.
Maybe she was going to go far in life after all.
