Bright Futures

November 25th, 5:56pm, Graeson Homestead, Northeastern Hinterlands

“Once again from the top, Fishone.”

To say Khadorek has a storied life would be an understatement to say the least; his life up till relatively recently had been a whirlwind of activity, ups and downs, soaring, if sometimes misguided, glories and brutal tragedies, near escapes and painful punishments. For the longest time, Khadorek figured that was the lot he drew in life, to be in a constant state of action, stress and motion until the day death claimed him, for good this time. That is until… “One, two, three,” Khadorek orchestrated, each count punctuated by the clack of wood from the training swords he and Fishone were wiedling as he swung at her, making sure her blocks were proper, before she returned the gesture with her own strikes, “One, two, three.“ 

The last three years had been eventful as well, to be sure, but in much a different way than he could have ever expected, all starting with that simple journey from the Blue Raven to the family homestead of a friend in need. He never would have expected it to be the beginning of a whirlwind romance that continues even to that day, and if they’re attitudes did not show it, the rings gleaming on their left hands, given to set right what slipped through his fingers the first New Years they had together, certainly did. 

Khadorek looked up from the sparring match to see his darling wife Katharena sitting on the porch intermittently watching with a dreamy smile on her face; married life suited her just as well as it did him, and so to did the title of Countess Blackbyrne, even if that was only on paper, but who knows what the future holds. Her eyes met his briefly and her smile broadened slightly in acknowledgement, before looking back downward to her real focus of that moment, that being the two wriggling, cooing bundles in her arms that entered their lives scarcely a year after they were wed. Kath had always been eager to be a parent, and now that they were here, despite the stresses that occured early in the pregnancy, Khadorek found himself sharing in that feeling as well. Indeed, he was so happy that he was no longer worried, or at least not as worried, about his wife’s confidence that they were "only getting started,” whatever that meant, though he could at least assume his new house may require additions in the coming years; all the better, then, that he got so a large swathe of land, then, for while it required a fair bit of work to even get up and running, even now the people he hired or called in busied themselves towards the back of the Graeson property, and every once in a while workers or supplies, usually carried by one or more members of larger races, namely ogres or vrykul, would amble by onto the site, and each time Khadorek’s excitement would grow. Khadorek had plans, big plans, for that land and that house, and he would make sure that he would earn his keep and then some. Husband, father, country squire, maybe even a businessman, things were certainly looking up. There was something else too, though for the moment it escaped him. Khadorek furrowed his brow at that thought, he normally had a very good memory, and he recalled it being rather important, so why did-THWACK.

Khadorek staggers back as his world becomes a flash of white and pain, and in response he lashes out in the direction of whatever hit him with a swift kick. His boot collides with something small and soft and it shifts, and whatever hits him falls to the ground with a small ‘oof.’ It was then he realized that he was in the middle of a sparring match when he zoned out, and that he had just been smacked across the face with Fishone’s sword, and he in turn kicked her rather roughly to the ground. 

“That hurt, damnit,” She remarks, staring up at him with a slight pout, though this starts to change to a smirk, and Khadorek cannot help but feel one of his own forming, and before long they were laughing at the situation and Khad’s foolish reminiscing. 

“Sorry Fishone, my mind must be elsewhere, hope you’re ok,” he admits, his former laughter now a chuckle as he offers her a hand up. “Perhaps it is time for a break, but you are doing very well, perhaps next time we’ll do something a bit more freeform or advanced, put what you’ve learned to the test,” he offers.

“Oh, yes!” Fish cheers, taking his hand and almost leaping to her feet with his help, “gonna have to practice with my spear too, can’t let that slip!” She states with a roguish grin. Khadorek can’t help but smirk at her eagerness; Fishone was the perfect apprentice in that respect, get her something she was interested in and she devours knowledge like a wolf devours meat, a teacher’s dream. Teacher… That was another new thing for him, one he quite liked the idea of, passing his skills on… maybe she need not be the only student he takes on.

With a light titter of laughter, Katharena rises from her chair, placing the twins in a cushioned basket and lifting them up into her arms. “Well if you two are taking a break, perhaps it is time to have supper,” she suggests, slowly and gently making her way to the door, “I’ll need some help, so don’t take too long catching your breath.” “You go on, Fishone, I’ll join you soon,” Khadorek says with a smile. Fish nods vigorously, dropping her sword and dashing off to join Katharena in the house. He narrowly catches the blade as it falls to the ground, walking over to a nearby rack for them, chuckling softly as he watches her run towards the doors. He doesn’t follow, not just yet, he wanted to enjoy this crisp air for a moment more.

He lets out a relaxed sigh, looking out over the landscape with a contented smile. At long last, the future seemed bright.
