Quirk Analysis #1 — Present Mic
Starting off strong with one of my favourite heroes!
Present Mic’s quirk, Voice, is a long range emitter-type that increases the volume of his voice. Like, seriously, he can produce some insanely high-pitched sounds that are super effective in incapacitating villains during fights!
As seen here, in his fight with the villain Batstyle (12/4), Mic is able to produce sounds up to 140dB and ~100kHz in pitch (WOW!) given that Batstyle’s mutant quirk altered her hearing capability but ended up being temporarily deafened from their fight.
Mic is a really effective fighter not just because of his shockwaves of sound (Loud-Out Shout) that can physically knock people over, but also because his lower-level moves are disorienting. He features in group battles here and here as a support teammate, where he causes the villains to lose balance (ears are a balance organ!) and the latter villain physically covers his ears, giving Torch the chance to attack!
Voice is a subset of Sound Manipulation. Mic uses sound amplification and sound attacks (see sonic scream) but I think he has such potential to go beyond (Plus Ultra, lol) and apply his quirk in more creative ways. Of course, this really depends on Mic’s upper threshold and his body’s capability of withstanding super loud sounds.
I think the most likely application currently would be pressure manipulation through controlling sound as pressure waves; we already know that Present Mic is able to produce shockwaves, but without his support item (his directional speaker) he doesn’t seem to be able to control the direction that his waves travel in. I assume that it naturally spreads in an AoE fashion since sound is transmitted through air, and spreading it like that would reduce the force of the pressure wave. Maybe if his directional speaker had further settings that could streamline or broaden his Voice scope, the pressure of each wave would significantly increase and decrease respectively. If his speaker has its own amplification system, it could also reduce the strain on his throat! I’ve heard you on the radio, Mic— you can’t be on vocal rest forever.
If only I could get my hands on the blueprint of that directional speaker! I seriously think Present Mic has one of the coolest quirks in the hero charts at the moment. He’s just not the greatest live show to be at, given that being there to see him fight carries the risk of your eardrums being damaged (though the risk is reduced by the support item) so beware if you, like me, enjoy showing up to watch the pros fight.
