TRACY CHEVALIER - ‘REMARKABLE CREATURES’ (FIRST PUBLISHED 2009)
First sentence:
'Lightning has struck me all my life.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.9).
On religious Dissent:
'It is not surprising that there are several Dissenting sects in the town. Of course the main church, St Michaels, is still the Church of England, but there are other chapels too that serve those who question the traditional doctrine: Methodists, Baptists, Quakers, Congregationalists.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.24).
'Lyme was full of Dissenters, though it had a proper church too ... we were proud to think differently from the traditional Church of England, even if I couldn't really say what those differences were.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.62).
'The family were Dissenters - not unusual in Lyme, perhaps, which because of its isolation seemed to be a haven for independent Christians. I had no ill feelings towards Dissenters.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.96).
' "I don't know that Dissenters are any different, really." ' (Chevalier, 2019, p.123).
On reading:
'I went without a new shawl so that I might buy a book instead.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.40).
'Damn her novel reading.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.220).
On thinkng:
'Sometimes I got that hollowed-out feeling too when looking at a sky full of stars or into the deep water the few times I went out in a boat, and didn't like it: it was as if the world were too strange, for me ever to understand it. Then I would have to go and sit in the Chapel until I felt I could let God take care of all the mysteries and the worry went away.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.72).
On evolution:
'The idea was too radical for most to contemplate. Even I, who considered myself open-minded, was a little shocked to be thinking it, for it implied that God did not plan out what He would do with all of the animals He created. If he was willing to sit back and let creatures die out, what did that mean for us? Were we going to die out too?' (Chevalier, 2019, p.98).
' "It is too frightening for many, for it challenges our belief in an all-knowing, all-powerful God, and raises questions about His intentions." ' (Chevaliler, 2019, p.294).
On God:
' "I am sure God has better things to do than watch over every living creature on this earth," ... ' (Chevalier, 2019, p.190).
On Jane Austen:
'This was the sort of situation that she had read about in the novels she favoured by authors such as Miss Jane Austen, whom Margaret was sure she's met long ago at the Assembly Rooms the first time we visited Lyme. One of Miss Austen's books had even featured Lyme Regis, but I did not read fiction and could not be persuaded to try it. Life itself was far messier, and didn't end so tidily, with the heroine making the right match. We Philpot sisters were the very embodiment of that frayed life. I did not need novels to remind me of what I had missed.' (Chevalier, 2019, p.208).

28/7/25 - OTHER READING FOR JULY
PHEW …
THIS MONTH I AM ALSO READING

…
THE QUEEN OF FIVES
AN HISTORICAL MYSTERY WITH THE FESTI PLACE BOOK GROUP
📚📚📚📚📚
OUR MEMBERS ALSO READ OR ARE STILL READING …
TOP READER LEADER

…
THE SHADOWS IN THE STREET
As with the other Simon Serrailler books I found it a compelling read, with a surprising ending. The division in the Cathedral between the traditionalists and the people who want to bring in more ‘family friendly’ services reminds me of what want on in our Cathedral recently with the music - as well as being a bit like what is happening in the Parish of Basingstoke.
&

…
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
I have also read ‘Pride and Prejudice’ for at least the fifth time, and it never fails to delight afresh …
&

…
PERSUASION
… and I am halfway through ‘Persuasion’.
&

…
THE LITTLE WHITE HORSE
My daughter, shocked that I had never read her favourite book, ordered a copy of ‘The Little White Horse’ by Elizabeth Goudge. I have read the first few pages but had to put it aside to get on with ‘Remarkable Creatures’. I will probably have read a lot more by the end of July.
📚📚📚📚📚
OTHER READERS

…
STILL LIFE
I've read ‘Still Life’ by Sarah Winman which I enjoyed …
&

…
A QUESTION OF IDENTITY
… and then I read the next Susan Hill book which had a horrific story line, a lot about deviant sex and it ended so horrifically …
&

…
THE COMFORTS OF HOME
… I had to read the next one to find out what had happened …
📚📚📚📚📚

…
THE VOWS OF SILENCE
My extra reading for this month was ‘The Vows of Silence’ and I agree with many that it is a page turner, but would say at times almost too dramatic. I'd like to emphasise that this is only a minor criticism though.
&

…
WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING
I also read ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ by Delia Owens as I've heard it recommended by so many. Again a real page turner, so enjoyable but slightly disappointed with the ending (I thought I had a better one!)
📚📚📚📚📚

…
THE GHOST FIELDS
I also read ‘The Ghost Fields’ by Elly Griffiths. I love all her books, all based around the areas of Norfolk I know well and love.

…
BY ANY OTHER NAME
Am now reading ‘By Any Other Name’ by Jodi PICOULT. I can’t decide whether I like it as much as her other books but it is compelling reading as I want to know how it ends!
📚📚📚📚📚

…
MURDER BEFORE EVENSONG
I'm reading 'Murder before Evensong' by Richard Coles. It's light and easy to read. His choice of language shows his background as a priest, quite apart from any religious quotes … Probably a good airport read, but I'm enjoying it.
📚📚📚📚📚

…
COROMANDEL!
I'm back ‘in’ India I'm afraid, reading ‘Coromandel’ by John Masters.

MIRANDA JULY - ‘ALL FOURS’ (FIRST PUBLISHED 2024)
First sentence:
‘ “Sorry to trouble you” was how the note began, which is such a great opener.’ (July, 2024, p.3).
On life:
‘Who made the stars? Why is their life on Earth?’ (July, 2024, p.38).
‘Nobody knows what’s going on. We are thrown across our lives by winds that started blowing millions of years ago.’ (July, 2024, p.38).
On Jesus:
‘ … if Jesus had his sweater over his head and you were suddenly facing his chest, well, you would kiss it. You would not miss this chance for the whole rest of your life to be blessed by the experience.’ (July, 2024, p.70).
On sexual desire:
‘Now, for the first time, I understood what all the fuss was about. How something beautiful could strike your heart, move you, bring you down on your knees and then, somewhat perversely, you wanted to fuck that pure, beautiful thing. Sex was a way to have it, to not just look at it but to be with it. I suddenly understood all of classical art. The endless carved nudes, Venus in her shell, David.’ (July, 2024, p.73).
On the Divine Proportion:
‘We drank tequila and I wondered if the upside down triangle of his upper body - his bony but broad shoulders narrowing down to his small waist - was perhaps a classic proportion with a kind of ancient resonance. Something to do with Michelangelo’s drawings or Da Vinci or whoever it was. The Da Vinci code. Like if you measured the angles of his upper body would you discover those same measurements in the Bible or inscribed on a Greek vase and would they also correspond, if scaled up, to a larger, cosmological measurement, perhaps between stars.’ (July, 2024, p.82).
On gender:
‘ “Is your child a girl?” Don’t gender my child.” ‘ (July, 2024, p.109).
’Maybe all young men were bisexual now.” ‘ (July, 2024, p.125).
‘ “And you have a child, right? A son?” ”They’re non-binary. They/them pronouns.” ‘ (July, 2024, p.251).
On women:
‘ “Because we were all witches until very recently. We were cast out and burned at the stake only three hundred years ago. That’s nothing. No time at all.” ‘ (July, 2024, p.224).
On Simone de Beauvoir:
‘ “Remember the Simone de Beauvoir quote … You can’t have everything you want but you can want everything you want.” ‘ (July, 2024, p.227).

ALEX MICHAELIDES - ‘THE SILENT PATIENT’ (FIRST PUBLISHED 2018)
First sentence:
‘I don’t know why I’m writing this.’ (Michaelides, 2018, p.1).
On thinking:
‘I’ve never been that comfortable with words - I always think in pictures, express myself with images … ‘ (Michaelides, 2018, p.1). ’I tore off a sheet of paper from a pad, and reached for my pen. An old habit, formed at university - something about the process of putting pen to paper helps me organise my mind. I’ve always had difficulty formulating an opinion until I’ve written it down.’ (Michaelides, 2018, p.43).
On working in mental health:
‘I mean, of course I wanted to help people. But that was a secondary aim - particularly at the time I started training. The real motivation was purely selfish. I was on a quest to help myself. I believe the same is true for most people who go into mental health. We are drawn to this particular profession because we are damaged - we study psychology to heal ourselves. Whether we are prepared to admit this or not is another question.’ (Michaelides, 2018, p.16).
On mental health:
‘ … we are made up of different parts, some good, some bad … a healthy mind can tolerate this ambivalence and juggle both good and bad at the same time. Mental illness is precisely about a lack of this kind of integration - we end up losing contact with the unacceptable parts of ourselves.’ (Michaelides, 2018, p.39).
On therapy:
‘The aim of therapy is not to correct the past, but to enable the patient to confront his own history, and to grieve over it.’ (Michaelides, 2018, p.240).

E.B. WHITE - ‘CHARLOTTE'S WEB’ (FIRST PUBLISHED 1952)
First sentence:
' "Where's Papa going with that axe?" said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.' (White, 2022, p.1).
On Wilbur:
' "I'm less than two months old and I'm tired of living," he said.' (White, 2022, p.20).
' "I'm really too young to go out into the world alone," he thought as he lay down.' (White, 2022, p.31).
On Charlotte's web:
