Week 3 :
Examined Life by Judith Butler and Sunaura Taylor, Directed by Sunaura’s older sister, who is a filmmaker
This video has shown us the many topics about society and bodies. What a person can do or cannot do, whether it’s physically, mentally or socially. From what I took notes of, they point out many different aspects of humans in society. Sunaura Taylor is physically disabled. Her role in society gets degraded in a way because she’s always in a wheelchair. She talks about “taking a walk” and it could mean different things. Physical accessibility leads to Social accessibility. She goes on and talks about how on her walks, she would mentally prepare herself to get a coffee. To most of us, it is a normal routine to just walk up to the counter and buy our coffee and take it with us to our table. However, Sunaura buys her coffee then grabs it with her mouth because she couldn’t physically grip it. She talks about how it is an effect of Denormalization. It makes people uncomfortable, even if it is just Sunaura adapting to her surroundings.
They continued talking about what is a body about, what they can do and what a body should look like. Differences and changes can scare people because it can remind them that they won’t fit in and belong in a community if they are like that. People just assume things and demand that they should act a certain way. They talked about a guy who was killed because the way he walked was too feminine. It ties into what society thinks a body should do for different genders and people. It shows our boundaries and where it lies as a human and what lies as non-human. Do we or do we not help each other with basic needs? Would people who usually help will understand because they used to be in that role themselves? But in the end, health is still human. People are allowed to change their body the way they like because it is their body!! Denying this will make you less human in a way.
There are some places I went to that are disabling spaces for people. Disabled, socially, gender, etc.

This image shows the stairway to Massey University.
The good thing about these stairs as a student is that there are breaks in between each set of stairs. However, it is disabling towards people who use a wheelchair or aren’t physically fit enough to climb that much stairs.

This image shows the pathway to Massey University
This walkway can be sensory overloading because of how loud your steps can be on the ground (and a bit bumpy). The ground isn’t fully supported for your steps to be more quiet. Also it is quite disabling for people in a wheelchair because of the texture and bumps of the flooring. It makes it hard for them to move through without shaking so much and because of the unnecessary bumps.

This image shows the exterior of a door on my way to the water front.
It is disabling for people who can’t move physically to open it. One way to help is to make the door open automatically.

The danger of a single story By Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Week 2 : assignment
A story can shape someone’s view. This can range from what language you use in this story. Anger, sorrow, happiness, they change the reader’s opinions and beliefs about a lot of topics. A single story can be dangerous due to the fact that the author has the power to use media literacy to manipulate the reader. Stories can form a person and single stories are very incomplete. It makes you learn about a second point out of view compared to actually experiencing it yourself. It makes you assume the many stereotypes that the media has shown you or the authors of a single story can tell you.
When you grow older, you can choose what to consume and criticise the opinions other people and yourself have.
When you consume a single story, that topic will be the only thing you create. The power of critical thinking can help you understand outside what you are consuming.
I personally relate to Chinmamanda Ngozi Adichie since I am a Filipino who grew up with English speaking/ American cartoons, whereas Chinmamanda grew up in Nigeria reading American and British books. She talks about how the characters in her novels are white skinned and I related to that. When I was younger, I would draw many characters not a shade darker than white. I was really out of touch with my own culture too because I am not able to speak, read or write my own language. Many people say that I have an American accent and never a Filipino accent.

Part 3 :
The final part! Since I took a step up!😔
There is a barrier (cubes) between the pedestrian’s pathway and the roadway. I walked towards the pedestrian pathway.
This area is just one straight line rather than an open area compared to the other photos.
Tumblr media
On a sunny day, it would be more useful to use the pedestrian pathway to block out the shade since it has a rooftop to it! However, if a lot of people walk together in a group down this path, it gets really loud because of the metal flooring.
I usually avoid this by walking on the side of the road since I don’t like loud sounds.

Part 2 :
To my right, that path is available for vehicles, however, a lot of pedestrians like to walk on that path. Which makes it dangerous!
Literally!! the weather was so nice in this area because of how much the sun hits everywhere.
Also considering how there are many greens (trees, flowers and grass) around the area makes it more aesthetic and comforting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Around this area, there are public benches for everyone to use!
And as always, the area is flat! Making it easy to walk around (better than hills and slopes! lol!)
Also big rocks? There are three of them! They represent the New Zealand mountains : Taranaki, Ruapehu and Tongariro.

Part 1 :
I started outside Massey University and right in front of the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park
As said in my notes and drafts, this area is open to anyone. It is mainly accessible to people who walk and in front of the barrier poles would be accessible to vehicles as well.
I like to walk and hangout with my friends around this area too you know! I think it’s a really nice place to enjoy the scenery and open air. Since, as I said, the air is more comfortable here because of how open the area is compared to the city where there are buildings everywhere.

These are other few pictures I took around the area! From my walk, I tend to see people skate around the area. Which makes senses! Since the area is very flat! The only thing that makes me worried about those people is that of the oncoming vehicles coming along the path. Even if they are told to be slow! (The vehicles) They are still huge and could really injure someone.
