Psycho but it’s okay- The boy who fed on nightmares analysis (2/2)
The boy who fed on nightmare – Character Analysis and Themes of the show Part 2
Tumblr media
THE WITCH
Tumblr media
‘A young girl lived all by herself in a castle. One day, she decided to go into town to find herself a friend. She offered the others what she thought were nice gifts, but they were horrified to see she held two dead birds.
“They called her a monster who brings along the shadow of death,” the narrator says. The girl was angry with every living thing and wandered off to a lake, where she reeled in fish and stomped them to death. On her third try, she reeled in a young boy, unexpectedly saving him from drowning.
Since then, the dark shadow stopped following the girl and the boy followed instead. Later, the girl asked if he would always stay by her side, and he replied that of course he would. But then she turned to him and ripped a butterfly apart. “Even after you see this?” she asked, her eyes glowing menacingly.
Scared, the boy ran away, the hook that connected him to the girl detaching. That’s when the shadow returned and whispered that no one could ever stay by her side because she was a monster’
Tumblr media
THE GIRL WHO WAS A MONSTER
In the first episode Moo Young describes a tale of a girl who has been forced to stay alone with a shadow hunting her. She is deemed to forever be a monster and to be a monster by everyone. No matter how hard she tries to be nice to people. Again, we see the theme of abandonment and loneliness I mentioned in my previous post.
Later we see Moo Young speak to a little girl bout her ambitions to become the princess of a fairy tale. Moo Young explains her choice to embrace being the witch. She mentions that the witch is the one that’s pretty, powerful, good, and wise in her fairy tales.
Tumblr media
THE GIRL WHO WANTED TO BECOME A WITCH
In the story of the boy who fed on nightmares, the witch is seen as:
1.      The powerful one that can eliminate his memories and the one who ends up in control over the boy’s soul.
2.      The good one because she takes his soul but only to teach him how to make it grow.
3.      The wise one because she advises him to become strong and embrace his nightmares.
The villain of the story isn’t the witch, it’s the nightmares that refuse to leave the boy and futility of his goals being reached. This is how Moo Young sees herself. The witch is the character Moo Young wants to be in this world. So, she uses fairy tales to do so. Instead of being the girl who was a monster she chooses to become the girl who wanted to be a witch. So, she writes the witches in her stories the way she wants to be seen.
Tumblr media
THE STRONG POWERFUL WITCH
Instead of being controlled by the shadow in her life.  She makes the witch with powers that can help her control people. Like I said before everything that the witch tells the boy to become at the end is what Moo Young wants to be. Moo Young wants control, she wants to be powerful (which is being strong), Instead of being the girl that is shunned and hurt by people refusing to stay by her side. She wants to be in control of the narrative so no one can affect her and make her feel alone.
Tumblr media
 THE PRETTY AND WANTED WITCH
She also makes the witch pretty. She tells the girl that she has decided to be the pretty witch. This is because she wants to be pretty to people. She wants to be pleasing to the eye of people like a flower. But instead of being like a flower or a butterfly (things viewed as beautiful), she destroys them by picking them apart because of her curiosity. She kills what’s pretty and likes what’s not to other people. Like the girl who gives dead fishes to the boys in her yard.  It’s a kind gesture giving people gifts, but the people instead viewed her gifts as an insult. They called her as a monster because she’s always surrounded by things that die. (the shadow of death that follows her). This is because of her disorder, the ASPD makes her do the things she does, but she can’t control it because then she won’t be herself, she was born that way, but everyone around her sees that as a monster.  She chooses to make the witches in her story pretty and wanted. What the witch gives is needed by the character of the story mean while what the girl in the other story gives to her neighbours is hated by the people and seen as horrifying.
Tumblr media
 THE WISE AND GOOD WITCH
She wants to be wise, so she writes fairy tales for kids teaching them how to become better, you can see she has an effect on people who feel abnormal just like her, who also feel like they have no control over their own shadows (like Sang Tae) and she also wants to be good which is why she defends people even if she laughs at the absurdity of the situation, even if she can’t care about them, she still makes a choice to go there and protect them from the bad guy like the father with the daughter in episode 1 and the parents and Sang Tae in episode 2. This is what she desperately wants to become.
Tumblr media
THE BOY WHO NEEDS THE WITCH BY HIS SIDE
To gain control of how people perceive her, she uses fairy tales to write herself into a different situation, she also chooses to embrace who she is and live everyday that way no matter how people view her. Even though we can see that she’s not okay, she’s still hunted by her memories of the past and she’s still has not attained full happiness. I think Gang Tae makes her passionate and so she thinks he’s the clue to achieving what she really wants, therefore she asks him to keep her in control. With him by her side for some reason she believes she will get to be better and more in control.

What's a good romance drama to watch? I mean something that is well developed with a proper ending and leaves you crying of happiness.
Romance Drama Recommendations!
I’m excited to have this ask because I LOVE K-Drama romances. I’m not exactly sure what “proper ending” and “well developed” mean as far as the show being those things, or the romance being those things, or both? And if proper ending means happy ending? But I’ll go with my gut (Anon, feel free to ask me more specific questions if you’d like :-) and give you my favorite shows that have romance at the forefront with good solid plots. I can’t list all of them because I’ve seen too many so I’ll just list what comes to mind when I think “Romance.”
Great Romance K-Dramas with Happy Endings & Lots of CUTE:
Fight For My Way
Always a fave for me, this drama is funny and heartwarming! The leading lady is a strong female which I LOVE, and Park Seo Joon plays her really cute down to earth best friend. It’s a childhood friends to lovers trope with a group of regular people (no rich heirs in this show!) and has a happy ending and a lot of cute flirting, cuddling and kissing. Argh I love these two!
Tumblr media
Oh My Ghostess
n quiet and shy girl who gets possessed by a flirty and extroverted ghost works in a restaurant with a cocky and confident boss. Obviously lots of mix ups and silly confusion as she goes back and forth between being herself and the ghost, but once the mains get together it’s game over where cuteness is concerned! The lead dude is a little alpha for me but I LOVE these guys together and I swear he is a kissing specialist #eye contact! Plus a fantasy trope makes this show unique.
Ho Goo’s Love / Fool’s Love
This is an underrated drama! An adorable naive puppy-like boy falls in love with a strong female athlete who has an unwanted pregnancy. This drama deals with sexual harassment, LGBT stuff (!!!), and rape. BUT it also handles the story in a really light-hearted and sweet way that’ll get you hooked. The scenes with Ho Goo and the baby are everything. Must Watch.
Because This is My First Life
This drama is almost perfect. It’s funny and heartfelt, and features not one but THREE romance plot lines! All of the ladies are really fleshed out and Soo Ji is my QUEEN (I love her. #feminism). The male lead is really passive and super supportive - I swear he invented consent when it comes to K-dramas. Plus it deals with real life sexism in the workplace and other feminist issues. I can’t say enough good things about it, however, the leading guy has a real life scandal (which is super weird considering how woke this show is), so that did mar my own personal feelings when watching and in order to recommend it, I first have to acknowledge this fact.
Tumblr media
Healer
Everyone knows healer will always have my heart. It’s in my top 10 and the couple is one of my favorite couples! Healer is played by Ji Chang Wook (swoon) and he gets involved with a feisty reporter played by Park Min Young (also swoon). It’s an action adventure with some very classic tropes: Rich people scandals, murders and hidden pasts. But it also has some of my favorite tropes: Beta Male Lead, childhood friends to lovers and traumatic pasts.
Shopping King Louie
This adorable fluffy drama is full of k-drama nonsense and I LOVE IT! It’s got amnesia, a rich heir, and is very trope heavy but sweet as hell. If you’re looking for light-hearted fun, with very innocent romance (think hand holding, piggy backs and PG kisses) this is for you! Great Soundtrack as a bonus.
Coffee Prince
A classic drama with the gender bending trope. A girl disguises herself as a boy to get a job and confusion and love ensues. OMG I love anything that even has a hint of “gay” and if you do too, you’ll love this!
Legend of the Blue Sea
This show is by no means brilliant but it’s a good solid fantasy drama with a sweet romance. It’s very cute and I LOVE the leading lady…who is also a MERMAID! Think ‘Korean Splash with Lee Min Ho.’ So, no one is winning any awards, but for romance and overall storyline it delivers. I really loved the fantasy element and the fated past lives (i’m a sucker for that trope!).
Tumblr media
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
Super cute and upbeat romance between a handsome swimmer and a less confident tomboy athlete. This is a lot of people’s favorite show because the couple is so sweet and you get to enjoy them have dates and get to know themselves better through one another. Beta Male alert!
Why Secretary Kim
This show has one episode left but because it exceeded my expectations, I’m listing it! It takes my least favorite trope: Rich cold dude falls in love with poor sassy secretary– and turned it on it’s head to create something fun, silly, totally adorable AND very romantic. There are very few dramatic twists and no silly “let’s break up” tropes to deal with. It’s just watching two adorable people learn about one another and compromise to fit each other’s needs. Plus the romance…it’s pretty up there - there is a TON of falling on top of one another lol. If you like Park Seo Joon, you’ll love this.
Great Romance K-Dramas with Happy Endings & More Melo Storylines
It’s Okay That’s Love
A really beautiful story that I don’t want to spoil. I will say this, the leading lady Kong Hyo Jin is perfect and I’ll watch anything she’s in. D.O. from EXO is flawless. This show features one of my favorite topics: Trauma and mental illness, but in a really lovely and deep way. It’s the first k-drama that I’ve seen really tackle this subject sensitively, and the romance is realistic and super lovely. A minor character has a love line too that’s really cute!
Tumblr media
Just Between Lovers
This show is heavy on the melodrama and centers around a group of people who have dealt with a past trauma, killing members of their families. The lead couple made me fall in love with both of the actors, quickly making Lee Junho my bias wrecker. It also made me realize how much I love angst! It features real people (not rich heirs) which is a plus for me. If I can watch a love story that’s about healing from trauma through love and support…I’m in!
Come And Hug Me
I just finished this show and consider the leading couple to be magical and tragically fated, which I am SUPER into. It has an interesting if not over-the-top serial killer thriller aspect that can really only be found in Korean Drama Land. Warning: This show is slow paced and full of angst. If you do not like couples gazing into one another’s eyes and crying, skip this one. You will cry of happiness at the end, but you’ll earn it by sadly crying for the rest of the show which I was a sucker for.
I have a billion more I could have included but I tried to only recommend ones with good structured plots and happy endings only.
Enjoy!Shana

Do you have any light hearted kdrama recommendations that have little or no heart wrenching stuff in them? Kind of like ‘touch your heart’ I’m asking for a friend
Yes! I love my easy-viewing stuff - we all need a break from the heavy emotions sometimes :D
[Updated List 2019]
Light-Hearted Fluff K-Dramas with little/no melodrama
Shopping King Louie
Ridiculously fun and lighthearted romp following a spoiled and useless chaebol with amnesia who is being taken care of by a country bumpkin in the city. Very low stakes, super adorable couple, and as many tropes as you can fit in your bag, this one is one of my favorites to recommend.
Touch Your Heart
A sweet, silly and very mild rom com about a serious boss and his hallyu star secretary. This show was an obvious response to the chemistry that Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na had in Goblin so it was nice to see them together again. Yoo In Na is such a fun person to watch!
Tumblr media
Top Management
I know this show is mainly on Youtube Premium BUT I just got an email from Youtube basically saying “hey we know you never want to pay to watch our shows so we’re just going to let you ok?” so that’s something… Adorable mini drama about a girl who can see the future and becomes the rookie manager for a kpop band. Fun and easy (plus they seem to be setting it up for another season…)
Eulachacha Waikiki / Laughter In Waikiki
I hope you’re ready for a crazy amount of unlikely situations and nutty hijinks because this show is probably one the most silly ones I’ve ever watched. It follows a group of friends who own a hostel so it’s a slice of life drama. At certain points I was like “this is TOO silly” but I’m glad I stuck with it cause it was so hilarious. Plus, the baby is a star!
The Best Hit / Hit The Top
A famous 90′s boyband dude travels into the future and meets up with his family and friends in this really cute drama featuring Yoon Shi Yoon. I LOVE Yoon Shi Yoon in pretty much everything but this role was made for him - he is hilarious. It’s a slice of life but features the k-pop music industry so the setting is unique.
Light-Hearted Fluff K-Dramas with a tiny bit of melodrama but overall easy-viewing
Her Private Life
Park Min Young really knows how to pick dramas. I loved this one about a museum curator who is secretly a fangirl obsessed with an idol. It’s fun and fluffy but does have a very mild childhood trauma thing with his mother but I mean, 99% of dramas like this do? If you like this one, Touch Your Heart and Why Secretary Kim are by the same person and have similar vibes.
Tumblr media
Fight for My Way
I love this drama! The couple is one of my OTPs and it’s really funny and a mostly lighthearted story of a group of friends. It’s down to earth and adorable - I’ve never had anyone complain about this one!
Why Secretary Kim / What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim
I was prepared to hate this drama’s premise: Boss in love with secretary. YUCK. BUT they turned all of the tropes on their heads and this show was a joy to watch! There’s a bit of kdrama childhood trauma but overall it’s a very easy watch with great chemistry (some people even though it was boring because they get together and a bunch of episodes are just them happy together which I personally loved)
Tumblr media
The Secret Life Of My Secretary
A CEO chaebol loses his ability to recognize faces and needs his secretary to help him navigate his new reality. The two mains are the most adorable dummies and the side characters are awesome! You’ll laugh a LOT at all of the dorks and I plan on rewatching this soon just to chill and enjoy.
Wok of Love
Despite the fact that the show was shortened by two episodes because of sports, this drama is a funny and quirky show worth watching. Many people dropped it because it was SO crazy for the first couple of episodes (it has a talking horse people!), but it does settle into a really sweet and fun story about a chef, a gangster and a rich girl and her family. If you love food, this show is for YOU!
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
A K-drama fandom favorite! Adorable college romance about a female weightlifter and a super hot swimmer dude. I mean she’s hot too. Anyways, two cuties!
Tumblr media
Terius Behind Me
FBI agent goes under disguise as a babysitter! While there are some intense parts of this drama because it’s a crime thriller, the characters are super funny and all work perfectly together to create a comedic element. Honestly this show was almost perfect for me, and I’m very picky.
Oh My Ghostess
A shy withdrawn girl working at a restaurant possessed by a sassy ghost. Do I need to go on? There is a little bit of sad but for the most part it’s super fun.
Oh My Venus
People who know me know that i’m not “into” the message of this drama because it’s about weight issues, but I will admit that the couple has amazing chemistry and overall it’s a super fun show, loved by pretty much everyone else.
