What is social media? Merriam-Webster describes social media as "forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content" But to people, it can mean many different things. To me, social media is my main form of communication and sharing with my friends. Without social media keeping contact with my friends and family would be much more difficult so it has become essential to my communication. Social media is also a form of entertainment with many different creators and artists using these platforms. In addition to entertainment social media is also a news source for me. While it may not all be reliable social media is a good way to keep up to date on current events and what's going on in the world. With everyone having access to social media many different stories can also be shared.
While social media can be used to share anything I would consider myself a more closed user. I do not share with the public often and when I do it is usually only small bits or nothing too serious. My main use of social media is for communication with friends and entertainment. Most of my interactions are usually low profile or not very personal if they aren't with someone I know. When I do share publicly it tends to be for the entertainment of others usually being comedic and not quite as personal.
Understanding social media can be quite difficult as there are many different platforms around and many different things to keep in mind when sharing and viewing content. Sometimes using a different platform can be difficult as the norms of sharing may be different from another platform. I believe I can adapt well to different platforms and have a basic understanding of what's going on to be able to properly use social media. Another big problem with social media is misinformation. This can come in many forms whether it be a how-to, a fake news article, or a rumor. Misinformation is dangerous and can cause many problems so picking up on it is important. I am not the best at detecting misinformation but have become better over the years. Figuring out what is fact and what isn't is important to making sure you don't develop beliefs based on lies. A lot of content out there is catered to make people believe certain things so being wary of the dangerous people and misinformation is crucial to existing on social media.
Being a part of a communication on social media class I would like to learn how to be more aware of misinformation on social media. I would also like to be more aware of people trying to gain a following around bad ideas. I want to be able to decipher and educate about social media as to not fall for the lies posted online. I would also like to learn how to use social media to promote things whether it be something like my career or an art I am interested in.
