And bunnydoll fic recs? Boy do I ever!

This is gonna be a bit long so I'm gonna put this under the cut.

To be clear, this isn't a comprehensive list and I won't be listing every fic I ever enjoyed. This isn't ranked either.

I Still Needle You by CanterburyBell - an oldie, but a goodie; one of the first (maybe even the first?) to really get stuck in my craw. Just re-read it and, though there's some dated characterization, it's still so good. I love the somber atmosphere and the little worldbuilding details. Plus, some jealous Jax doesn't hurt. The way that their strange dynamic is written is done well, too. Leaves that good ache that I like in my bunnydoll.

The snake and the water spring by Estrogem - you might already know this one since I drew fanart for it, but I figured I'd mention it anyway. I really enjoyed Jax's aversion to touch and how it conflicts with his goal to comfort her, the fic conveys it with such vivid description too. The tenseness of the whole thing felt like a held breath that couldn't be released until the end. The first in a series, but could function as a standalone.

Watchul Eye by WinterWonderland - a bit of a weird one with a take on Jax that is divisive, but it's a read that gives you something to chew on in regards to how the digital world can muddy the waters when it comes to morals and ethics. As someone who got into TADC because of how much I enjoyed IHNMAIS, I appreciate when fics like this get me to think.

I'm going down (I'm taking you with me) by BiancaBibi - the third fic in a series (you do have to read the others for context); Jax self-sabotaging his relationships (esp with Ragatha) is a delight and this fic is a great example for it. Something that I really appreciate is how the resolution was handled in a way that was messy, yet satisfying. Major kudos to the author, for sure.

Forgiveness by roseroseio - a post-Episode 4 fic with wonderfully complex characterization in only 1k~ words; they are messy but they care about each other and I love it, well and truly.

a good friend by becki - I'm not immune to a good sickfic, especially when it's got some emotional constipation on the side, and this is a good sickfic. What else can I say?

The End of the Rope by Mable - if you're a bunnydoller, chances are that you've read at least one Mable fic; this one's my favorite because of the hurt/comfort of it all (heed the warnings). The story is super solid with delicious characterization and a cute ending to boot.

Absent by Eveack - a story that is both fun and thoughtful in the way it handles Jax and Ragatha's dynamic; the writing style and the dialogue both flowed really well and I liked the little switch-up it gave to the classic premise of "concerned character checks in on the other person's room".

I Am What I Am (Terrible Hands) by sunflowerkid_333 - this one's a post-Episode 5 fic from Ragatha's POV and I loveee how she was written in this. The ghost of her past dynamic with Jax is a presence that haunts this fic and it's so so wonderfully bittersweet.

Since you've read As Close As It Gets, I'm gonna assume that it's okay to recommend Mature and Explicit fics, but I'll separate them anyway for convenience.

Et in Arcadia ego by BlueWay - starting off with this one because HOLY SHIT?? THIS IS SO UNDERRATED?? I understand that the literary writing style makes it a bit of a dense read, but the slow burn is absolutely excellent. I live for the quiet moments where their familiarity with each other shines through. You wanna get introspective? Let's get introspective. Also, cowboys.

The Game: A Beginner's Guide to Sociopathy by RunwayQueen - this offbeat Human AU has a hold on me and I look forward to every update. The way that the author writes Jax is very compelling to me because he sucks and it's so much fun to follow him.

Frenemies With Benefits by moviefan_92 - speaking of Jax being insufferable, here's 28k~ words of it. I wanted to strangle him the whole fic, it’s so funny. Something that I also appreciate was how the author gave their "parts" some eccentricities instead of having it just be 1-to-1 with human bodies. I like when authors aren't afraid to get a little weird with it.

At Your Command by Anonymous - another fic that I've made fanart for (heed the warnings); despite what happens in the story, I find it really sweet how they relied on each other to get through a horrible situation. It is a very well-written car crash that I continue to recommend.

Skip to the End by CanterburyBell - a great read where Jax and Ragatha try not to crumble under the weight of their mutual attraction. Plenty of funny moments that had me smiling and exhaling through my nose. I adored the tension and the release when they realized that they'll be okay :]

Shoot Your Shot by CanterburyBell - there's something about the intentionally off-kilter energy of this fic that scratches my brain real nice. Jax and Ragatha boning while sorting out their situationship (with added conversation points regarding gun kink and a dead elephant) is a good weird. It's great, is what I'm trying to say.

Ordinary by Kalfry - THIS FIC. THIS FIC.... [head in hands] This fic felt like it was made to appeal to me specifically and it drives me CRAZY. Their characterizations are EXACTLY what I'm after, it's nuts! Fantastic Ragatha and Jax. I live for their interactions. PLEASE shower it with love and appreciation so that we can get more of it!!

Something I noticed in Episode 6 (spoilers):

During both Zooble’s talk with Gangle and Kinger’s talk with Ragatha, there’s a prominent shot of a reflection. During these scenes, they are literally Self-Reflecting and looking inwards to address their issues, and are all the better for it.

There are no reflections during any of Jax and Pomni’s interactions. But you know where there is? The end of the episode during Jax’s breakdown.

My best guess is that in that moment, Jax was looking inwards, realizing the reality of his situation and the person he had become, and without anyone there to help him (because he pushed everyone away) all he can see are the worst parts of himself. The only way to keep himself from totally abstracting is to keep up his “nothing matters” delusion.

Maybe this was super obvious, but I still think it’s cool. This show is so clever.

Me: 😃✨️ GREAT! ✨️😃

"Jax! Look at me! I said look at me! Are you okay? Please tell me you're okay!"

His gloved hands defensively tried to push her away, but feebly failed to do so when they just numbly came to rest on top of hers. The rag doll's face was closer to his than it had ever been, making him see and take in every stitch of her fabric skin. It made it harder to think again- but in a strangely good way this time around.

Unable to focus on the raw tears leaking from the cheerful one's sorrowful eye, Jax shifted to look around the room- making brief eye contact with each cast member. Each stupid cartoon character.

Not seeing the sad one or the crazy one or the grumpy one or the cheerful one.

Not even the new kind one.

All Jax saw was every single human still trapped in the digital circus with him.

There with him. Caring enough about him to be there with him.

And for whatever reason, Jax felt his ears fall behind his head. His legs start to shake.

Felt his mask completely slip off and shatter onto the ground into a million irrevocable pieces.

Removing his hands from hers, the rabbitoid struggled to breathe as he hugged himself- making Ragatha slowly take her hands off his overall straps. Not realizing just how much he had been relying on Dollface to keep him standing upright, he instantly crumbled to the ground. He began to take in shaky, shallow, panicked breaths- ones that quickly mixed with tears. His soft crying quickly mounted to uncomfortable weeping which then spiraled to flat-out loud wailing- making everyone take a few steps back in shock.

Her instincts kicking in again, Ragatha buckled forward, ready to lean down and give him any sort of comfort she could- when Kinger put his hand on her shoulder, gently withholding her from doing so. This action alone caught Pomni's eye and made her freeze in her own empathetic desire to help Jax. The three eyed each other in a silent, mutual understanding before their eyes landed back on the heaving Jax.

Not yet.

The rabbitoid continued to weep, the tears pouring out of his eyes staining his blushed cheeks. His hands only tightened their desperate grip on his arms and squeezed them until he thought they'd lose circulation.

Not yet.

At his shocking, raw behavior, Gangle and Zooble exchanged a look and set their instruments down. Even they had a compulsive need to ease his pain- but one look at Kinger made them hesitate.

"I...I miss him...so much..."

His ears flush with his back, Jax bawled into his lap- his words so weak, so fragile they were hard to decipher as they mixed with the tears and breaths.

His heartbreaking confession made Ragatha exchange a desperate look with Kinger- but he only eyed her softly and firmly shook his head, tightening his grasp on her shoulder.

Not yet.

"I-I didn't mean to let him g- God! It-it all was an accident, I swear! I..."

Not yet.

"I...I..."

The rabbitoid trailed off, somehow buckling even more into his lap as his knuckles turned white with clutching his upper arms so tightly. He whined and whimpered around his teeth, hating yet loving how weak, how vulnerable, how free he felt without his funny mask on.

How human he felt right now under it all.

"I'm tired...I'm so [BLOINK]ing tired..."

He took a deep, shaky breath- making Kinger's hand lesses its' tense grasp on Ragatha's shoulder.

Almost...

"I just want to go home."

The flood of tears distorting Jax's vision, he gulped down one last desperate breath- and finally admitted words he had only dreamed about since he had entered the circus all those years ago.

Words he hadn't even told the stupid cartoon rabbit...the funny one...the human he saw in the mirror.

And when Jax and his small world seemed to implode into himself, coming to terms he couldn't comfort himself anymore- and finally let his exhausted hands fall into his lap in defeat, Kinger suddenly let Ragatha go and gave her a gentle nudge.

Just don't ever ask me to draw guns again lmao (no I can't,, Jailbreak needs those guns). At least og Ragatha can rely on her, well, different self, to shoulder most of the shooting. Two Jaxes is already hell on earth... at least only one of them prefers to chase and maim with his hands exclusively.. or maybe that's not a good thing

They also get different health indicators because neither Caine's wanna adjust the system to accommodate the changes made for this... let the chaos unfold further.
