Exhibit - progression
I’ve arranged my cylinders, displayed fabric and tiles tiles with nails. Tomorrow I will decide wether I need a white board or this plinth to display the cylinders on and to add hock and loop velcro to the wall and back of tiles. In the end my fabric as been pinned onto the boards. I personally don’t like the way the 3rd piece hangs diagonally over the corner of the two boards but then the joins would show. I don’t like how my tiles are displayed wonky and the two ceramics displayed together. I selected 6 pieces of fabric, cylinders and tiles to be displayed to maintain that influence of structure. In the end I decided against using the wooden shelf as it could of been displayed on the wall and didn’t add anything as a floor structure. I also think this corner is really dark and think my work would of looked better in the natural light hung from the ceiling. Either way I’m glad this project is over and pleased my some of my outcomes.

Clay tiles on a wooden shelf thinking about hanging this off a wooden board
I’ve chosen my favourite tiles that I think look good together and go with my fabric. Since my cylinders didn’t turn out they way I expected this is my alternative option to present which I think will compliment my fabric better.

Sounds made from clay tile tapping finding this noise really soothing and satisfying. If I could exhibit my work in a room on its own this could be playing in the background.

Ceramic cylinders out the kiln Really unhappy with my outcomes thought the tin glaze would of apply white wished I had dove more layers and used the new tin instead using up all the old tin. I won’t display these and will find an alternative option to present my tiles instead. I don’t like the colour of the stone clay against the blue with drips of white.

Review of FMP - Evaluation
I started this project by looking into the meanings and messages behind the shapes used in Islamic design. I looked into sacred geometry circles and hexagons.
My ideas surrounded my connection with Middle Eastern Islamic tiles. I was inspired by the geometric ceramic patterns and botanical motif illustrations. I wanted to centre my design through my connection with the colour blue and white. I researched ceramics in depth, Chinese porcelain, Dutch Delftware, KLM flights, The Willow pattern, toile de jouy and the Turkish eye. I then started looking into Islamic textiles shibori printing weaving paper and finger knitting wool and wire and dying fabric. I visited the Victoria and Albert Museum and record this in my sketchbook.
At the start of the project I looked at symmetry and using stickers and stencils with water colour which worked really well but didn’t have enough to go with. I then started to look into ceramic tiles and tried different clay and impressions to press into to clay. I then looked into glazes and designs that could of been carved out of lino or plaster which could be made into a mould. I also tried scaffito using slip.
I looked at all the different processes and techniques. I created loads of mood boards. I also thought about functionality behind these pattern that could be on crockery and coasters. I went to Lisbon and got inspiration from the architecture and tiled buildings. I went back and researched patterns and the geometric inspiration. I researched different shades of blue from cobalt to indigo and used them in both mediums. I researched artists and sculptors like Hilda Carr and Halima Cassell. By the end I looked at brands and homeware like anthropology and H&M and how they displayed their products.
I altered my take on geometric patterns with processes and materials. When I used ink on my fabric the more diluted dye created a diffused mark that bled. Which was out of my control. Similarly, in ceramics I could control what I have made before I put it in the kiln once glazed it would come out differently.
I am glad I’ve pushed myself with scale throughout this project. By drawing and painting on a wall size scale and using 3d materials like ceramics to create large vessels. By the last few weeks I did struggle to get time to create my ceramic vessels in the ceramic room. I came in some of the half term to finish my ceramics which suited me well. But other than that timing and planning for using those rooms haven’t really been a problem.
Throughout this project I have timed myself well. Using the pro former plan has helped make me think more generally about the project and overall completion of tasks. The weekly Tuesday review hasn’t really made me think more about the weeks ahead where as the pro former plan did. I have learnt so much about ceramics and textiles throughout this project that I didn’t already know.
This project has helped me develop my skills and understand new terminology. I am glad I have developed my project from its starting point as I won’t of learnt these new skills. I’ve learnt loads about ceramics processes and techniques and using slip and glazing and also dying fabric, using screen print ink and resistances like batik wax and discharge ink.
For my final piece I challenged myself and made 7 vessels applying wax to carving patterns with slip and impressions as well as and painting design with glazes and metal oxides. Along with 6 large fabric hand painted patterns dyed with indigo. I am happy with my exhibit display, I really like the way my fabric is hung and on such a large scale along with my ceramic cylinders on the floor. Although, 2 of my cylinders didn’t look so polished looking they show the quirk to my project. Overall, I am happy with this project glad I pushed my self with ceramics and working on a larger scale.
After writing this a day before I saw my glazed fired ceramic cylinders I feel different about my final outcome. I do not like the colour of stone which was meant to be white. the painted blue design looks different against the stone. I am now going to display my tiles on the board with nails along with my fabric as they work well with the fabric its just a shame my cylinders didn’t turn out the same. I am still happy with my project just wished I’d asked for a little more help when creating the cylinders as I had never made them before. Looking back am I happy with the ceramic tiles I’ve made the new processes and techniques I’ve learnt.

7 glazed cylinders ready to be fired for the final time
I went in to college to use the ceramics room over the holiday to finishing firing and glazing my cylinders. I didn’t expect any more than 2 to be ready to be glazed so having all 7 was convenient. I was able to apply them all one layer of white tin stoneware glaze and 6 them with a hand painted cobalt carbonate design. I’m happy with how they have turned out and the timing that they will all be fired by next Wednesday in time for final hand-in on Friday.

First failed attempt at applying white tin glaze no a large vessel
When I was being shown how to apply the glaze to the vessels. I didn’t question to remove the excess glaze that had dripped down from apply the inside glaze. I then applied the outside glaze which left thicker places of glaze where i had drips. I regret not removing the glaze with water and sponge but at least it is not obvious on all sides of the vessel and may look different when fired. This effect these a uncontrollable effect which links to my work and how processes and materials alter my work accidentally and out of my control.

Applying the white tin glaze to the vessels
Ceramic buff clay fired and glazed with white tin stoneware. I poured the tin into a jug and poured the tin to the vessels till they were about 2 thirds full. And poured the excess tin into the bucket rotating the vessels coating all of the inside. I then removed excess tin on the outside with a sponge and water. I then re poured the tin to the jug from the bucket and mixed it. I then pour the tin onto the vessels that were placed on slats above the bucket and wiped the bases of each vessel as I repeated the exercise.

Bisque fired cylinders ready to be glazed fired with white tin and cobalt carbonate stoneware
Planning to apply a white tin only to the carved cylinder and add white tin and cobalt carbonate hand paint, splats, spots, dots and dashes to the others. The tallest thinest cylinder has a large diagonal dent on the back as it must of fallen and hit something when it was drying and could of been moved. Luckily this is not visible on both sides. The second largest cylinder looks like it tilting to one side but this is not obvious.

Review
This week I have painted more fabric frayed the edges, hung my fabric from above. Decided outcome designs for cylinders and format of fabric. Next week I will be glazing cylinders cutting and fraying fabric hanging it from above with wooden dowels and fishing wire, painting boards and evaluating my outcomes. I will alter my proformer plan and project proposal.

Ladders
I like the combination of using indstrutrial ladders and messy floor with light soft fabric.

Hanging fabric over a corner
This concept didn’t work as it made my work look over crowded and dark. This concept didn’t allow me to hang most of my fabric to their scale. I also tried to hang them and place them on the floor they were too short and would need a clean white floor and to be hung with finishing wire and a wooden dowels at a lower height.

Fraying fabric
I will fray all the fabrics sides. I am then going to stitch each side to stop further fraying and to create a pocket for the wooden doweling to go through. Which will weight the fabric once hung up. And allow me to hang up the fabric by attaching string the fabric wooden dowels instead of creating holes. The dowels will look more professional and straighten the fabric. I have started to fray the sides of each piece of fabric to add distress to the abstract work. Rather than sewing the edges or using pinking sheers.
