etho and bdubs when they're not teamed in a life series season are all like it should be you and me i would never betray you i built you a bedroom in my base i could never kill him because he would never trust anyone ever again they don't get you like i do i would fail my task for you is your new teammate treating you right etc etc etc. but when they're actually teamed it's like i hate my bitch wife why are you having fun with people who aren't me he said i should build my base out of this hard to obtain block and i'll complain about it the whole time but i'll still do it i'm doing things for the sole purpose of making you jealous i'll kill your horse just to see how far i can push it until you betray me let's have a session long dispute over a minor detail of our staircase design... they make me want to bash my head into the wall

IT IS FINALLY DONE!!! For this skin I& wanted to specifically challenge myself& to record my& progress since I&'ve always wanted to make a speedpaint for a Minecraft skin!! I& was feeling in the mood for an HD skin specifically, and this one is meant to compliment the other HD Joe skin I& made.

i feel theres a possibility jimmy will kill someone on their red life for the first time ever and that makes my head spin because that would be HUGE character development wise

for a while I thought it would be good for both of them if jimmy got to eliminate scott, but then I wisened up and realised that, while it would probably be cathartic to some degree, this wouldn’t actually solve anything (beyond the simple fact of killing scott lol) because scott would just frame it as an heroic sacrifice on his part. or as confirmation that jimmy’s still into him (which is kinda what I wrote that one time), because scott interprets all attention as good attention.

scott has retroactively justified being killed by people he’s close to before (martyn in limlife, gem in SL, pearl in WL, and he would’ve done it with pearl in DL too if she’d been quick enough to kill him before he did it himself). really what I want to happen is for jimmy to kill scott in direct pvp a couple of times, something that scott can’t reasonably claim he threw—because he knows exactly how good at pvp jimmy is, despite how it’s historically been in his best interests to pretend otherwise, ‘mcc isnt canon in this world’ or whatever—and then scott can get eliminated in some stupid way like stubbing his toe after using an ender pearl or something. or joel can kill him again.

the jimmy self-actualisation timeline I have, which I haven’t actually done anything with besides think about very intently, goes kinda like this¹:

third life: jimmy was with scott and, regardless of how exactly you want to interpret their dynamic, claiming that scott wasn’t a controlling partner is just bad media analysis lol. whether or not scott intended it, 3L saw a near-total loss of autonomy for jimmy, to the point that even his death was co-opted as mainly being about other people. all three of his deaths, actually. as a red name he was genuinely terrified to leave the house, and whenever he did try to threaten people, he was shut down by scott.

last life: jimmy was in a group where he got designated runt of the litter and was treated accordingly. starting with only two lives was sheer bad luck. grian permakilling him only reinforced the idea that jimmy shouldn’t have his own autonomy and can’t be trusted to survive on his own. this was also the second season in a row where jimmy had a conversation where someone asked whether he was in an abusive situation (martyn saying ‘I’ve just seen you get slapped around ... are you happy with scott?’ in 3L and cleo saying ‘I think they’re mistreating you’ in LL).

double life: jimmy didn’t have much of a choice about who he was teamed with. although tango was generally supportive, that relationship didn’t continue within a life series context,² and jimmy still behaved very much like he expected tango to hit him and shout at him. however, having someone who was actually nice to him was instrumental in his character growth. this is also the first season where jimmy tried to get scott killed.

limited life: jimmy had his most supportive team yet. forcing grian to be on a team with jimmy was great because it meant grian had to minimise the bullying for his own benefit (hell yeah. jess him). joel’s presence was also the most significant shift, because joel was the first person to treat jimmy like his own person instead of someone to be belittled or rescued. while jimmy was still first out, his overall experience was a much happier one, and he was also much more aggressive, in part due to the time mechanic allowing more risk/reward balancing. again, he was explicit about wanting to kill scott.³

secret life: jimmy survived an impressively long time as a red name, and wasn’t first out, which parallels the emotional growth he exhibited by operating mostly on his own for once. he was teamed with martyn on paper but they didn’t do much together (a stark contrast with earlier teams like in DL or LiL).

wild life: jimmy was on his fucking GAME. once again he survived an impressively long time as a red name. he was killing people, he was betraying people, he was taking charge of things, he was bamming lizzie in the bunker.

past life: so far jimmy’s actually been doing really well! he’s killed two people already (admittedly one of them was his own teammate, on accident, but still). being with joel again has genuinely been so good for him, because joel is extremely supportive and protective of jimmy, while also not crossing the line into being overbearing and suffocating (à la scott). joel also encourages him to be more aggressive and lean into the threat he poses to others as a red name.

¹there’s also an optional (very much not necessary, although it does provide some context if you’re a fan of cross-smp characterisation) prefix to the timeline that includes xlife, wherein the fact that jimmy gets essentially stripped of his autonomy in 3L is very much precedented by not only scott but also joel. the difference between them is that scott has decided that his is the ‘correct’ way to handle jimmy (jimmy’s into the degradation so it’s fine that I treat him like a dog) and joel has spent multiple seasons now dedicating himself to atoning for his earlier failures. you can pick which dynamic you prefer, of course.

²on hermitcraft they’re running a restaurant together or something and I think it’s very cute. jimmy deserves to have supportive friends! but in the life series there have only been a couple of notable interactions between them; I personally tend to think of them as amicable exes who realised they wanted different things and parted ways without conflict.

³technically jimmy did kill scott in limlife, but it was consensual, and they took/gave an equal amount of time from/to each other that episode (-1h, +30m), so I don’t really count this as character growth, although I do love to see it.

The truth about ethubs is that it is always meant to end with bdubs tragically dying in ethos arms or separated from him and longing for him. Even if you made a sweet college au or whatever there would be a point in either the near or distant future where this would happen because at the core of bdubs' soul alongside his eternal whimsy and love for beauty is also the soul of a dead wife

My controversial opinions is that I don't mind curses when done well. I love pattern recognition and mythologizing silly Minecraft series. To me curses are a recognition of luck (or lack thereof) as well as player behavior, eg. Grian's widow curse (it's a combination of grian being reckless and thus pushing his allies to be reckless, Grian refusing to self sacrifice 90% of the time, and Grian being quick to anger and thus betray, as well as grian sometimes pre-emptively mourning his teammates before they even die) is interesting to me because of... That. Because of it being his own fault, a result of his behavior and habits, rather than an all knowing God forcefully widowing him. THAT'S boring. Similarly, I always saw Jimmy's canary curse as being a mixture of astronomically bad luck, as well as him being a common target (both for bullying and persecuting), and him being clumsy/easily panicking when overwhelmed. It's not "curse of Jimmy sucks at Minecraft" or "curse of the watchers killing Jimmy first all the time with no other player input". To me the "curse" is intangible, it isn't actually a force pushing towards a certain outcome rather it is a self fulfilling prophecy based not on any sort of magic or supernaturality but simply based on players' fatal flaws. And the canary curse, as well, was always meant to be twofold; it's not just "Jimmy is cursed to die first" but also "Jimmy dying is the death of purity and peace", hence canary, and I always thought it to be beautiful symbolism. I think it gets a bad rep because it's true a lot of people have run it to the ground and also there are people who use it to take agency away from players and meaning away from their decisions, but imo I always thought these curses to be really nice and fun symbolism
