his simon? with a sweet thing?? that isn't repelled by his very existence??? he's gotta meet you! (he's also mildly upset that the rest of them are single. or is it jealousy that the man he's gotten himself off to is finally taken?)

it takes a little (a lot) of cajoling to at least show johnny a picture and when simon hands him his cracked phone, johnny whistles low and murmurs out a pretty lass.

and you do look pretty. you look pretty from the side as you're washing dishes, even with the gaudy yellow gloves covering up to your elbows. you're so pretty from the back as you're bent over, carefully basting the chicken you're baking. you even look pretty fuzzy, the camera blurring your features while zoomed in.

there's even a video of you but johnny doesn't overstep. he knows better. he waits for simon's go ahead, and once he gives the almost imperceptible nod, johnny quickly presses play.

the room is dim, the television casting a soft glow upon your face. your legs are folded beneath you, your gaze fixed on whatever it is you're watching, your hand reaching for the bowl of popcorn on the nightstand.

"ken wha' she's watchin'?"

"i dunno, but she's been into nature documentaries as of late."

johnny hums softly and the video comes to an end.

"yer a lucky man, LT."

simon doesn't say anything.

(and neither does johnny. not about the grilles of the window in every picture nor the quiet chirping of crickets and even quieter crunching of leaves in the video.)

thinking about your older bf!simon that cannot cope with being far from you.

when you’re in the shower, he’s sat on the lid of the toilet on his phone (watching those rug cleaning videos) enjoying your faint singing under the stream of water, the smell of your body wash on the cloud of steam- ready to pass you a towel or get your back.

when you’re at your desk, working from home or studying, he’s just on the other side of it reading the paper with one outstretched leg tangled with both of yours. he’s dead quiet when you’re on a call, just happy to be around.

when you’re doing laundry, collecting the clothes in the hamper and crouching to stuff them into the washer- turning around and accidentally colliding with a thick wall of muscle.

“sorry, love”

he steps aside but you can hear his soft footfalls as he continues to follow you throughout your home.

when you’re both watching something on the couch, what starts as his pinky locked with yours turns into his arm around your waist. that turns into your head on his chest, which culminates with you falling asleep in his lap with his cheek on your head and soft snores emanating from his lips.

when you grocery shop, you push the trolley but his chest is to your back, arms either side of you and hands clasped over yours on the handle. you can thank his military training for his uncanny ability to tell exactly when you’ll stop walking.

when he wakes up in the middle of the night, on a rare occasion when you’ve managed to slip out of bed without him realising, he’s immediately in a panic calling your name.

“in here, my love”

as soon as his heart settles, he realises the bathroom light was probably a dead giveaway. you’re taking a wee, you’ll be back in a minute.

that doesn’t stop a sleepy simon from leaning in the doorframe, shielding his eyes from the big light as he waits for you to finish up.

even on the short walk back to bed, you can feel fingers twisted in the back of your shirt- almost like you’re leading the way.

minute you’re both on the mattress, you’re being wrapped up in his arms, slotting you perfectly into the curve of his front- almost like you’re made for him.

Donnie doesn't often get drunk, you would know since he rarely ever joins the remaining left of your friend group in celebratory drinks. It was hard to celebrate things in the middle of the apocalypse but you and Leo try, at the very least to keep the hopes up in such a grim world.

That was why of course you were surprised when Donnie finally agreed to going to the makeshift pub at the base. Its not like you blamed Donnie for rarely wanting to drink, he needed his mind clear to be able to make machines on a whim.

"I know I've been bugging you but you don't have to go with us." You said, hugging your stomach as you looked up at Donnie. He was tall and massive, the mutant part of him making him quite large. He looked grown up, even older than he was with that haunted look in his eyes. You weren't sure if you were seeing things (your traitorous heart clouding your logic) but the distant look in his eyes seemed to dissipate when he looks at you.

"Even I need a break sometimes." Donnie murmured, his eyes dropping down for a second before he met your gaze once more. He cracked a small smile and offered a hand for you to take.

Together you walked through the halls to get to the bar, chatter getting louder the close you got. It was lively and happy, full of vibrance that the rest of your life has been missing.

"Ready to party your little heart out?" You asked, grinning. Donnie simply chuckled, a romantic smirk strewn across his face. He certainly seemed ready.

"Okay, Donnie I feel like that's enough." You chuckled, a hint of concern mingling in your tone. You gently pulled away the glass from his lips, preventing the already drunk man from getting even more intoxicated.

He grumbled under his breath, giving you a slightly hazy look. His face was flushed and his eyes half hooded, mouth curled into a smile you aren't used to seeing on his face.

Then his eyes softened, his eyes filled with an emotion that makes your heart beat and your throat close. He looked so soft and sweet, so vulnerable and open. Was this the alcohol making him seem as though he thought of you as even a sliver as much as you to him?

"I know I'm drunk," He slurred, body draped across the side of your chair. You turned to look at him, curious what he was to say. (Although wondering if you should stop him because drunk words are sober thoughts.)

"But I'm going to wife you up one day." He said, before you could decide whether to stop him. You froze feeling as though each of your nerves were on fire in the most delicious way possible. If it was logical you could have sworn your heart swelled like a hot air balloon, rising higher and higher and higher.

"Hmm, Don. I think we gotta get you back to your room." Leo suddenly chuckled nervously, appearing beside you. He held Donnie up, letting his brother lean against him.

"Goodnight, mi hermana." Leo said, before disappearing with a flourish. He had always called you that, hermana. Even since you were young before the apocalypse, he has referred to you as a sister. You wondered if perhaps that was because of what Donnie said. (Or maybe you are just overthinking and letting yourself be consumed by the happy delusions.)

Either way you sat at the bar, staring at where Donnie was sitting before thinking about his words. Letting them repeat over and over in your head like a melody you never wished to forget. You would like that, being his wife, a lot.

And just like that: like a flower blooming in a barren desert, your hope was planted. Something to look forward to in this grim world.
