“I feel like I can’t breathe.”

The air around him feels thick and hot, so, as subtly as he can he tugs at the collar of his shirt to give himself a bit of air. He clears his throat lowly, and feels the heat creeping up in his cheeks as she shifts. It’s only a matter of time before something embarrassing happens; to prevent that he figures he should head to the bathroom then head out early.

He taps her shins and she looks up at him with a small smile and bright twinkling eyes, “Bathroom,” he mouths.

With a small nod she moves her legs off his lap, enabling him to get up and nearly stumble over. Archie, who is asleep on the floor. When he makes it to the bathroom he quickly shuts the door and lets out all of the breath he had been holding. He places his forehead against the door and it feels cool against his heated skin. Taking several breaths he tries to relax himself. Being in such close proximity to her always had him short of breath, but with his new found feelings, he’s positive he only averages ten breaths a minute when around her. He thinks their standard movie night might not have been the best idea this week. Or maybe he could have just not sat by her, but there wasn’t really a world where he saw himself not near her if he was able to be.

Turning around he shakes out his arms a bit and his body really, almost like he’s a wet dog. But he needs to compose himself before going back out there. He takes the time to splash some water on his face and then pat it dry. And while he’s staring at himself in the mirror, telling himself what a hopeless bastard he is there is a knock at the door.

“Just a second,” he says, running his right hand through his hair.

When he opens the door he finds, Rae. And already it feels like the air is sucked out of him once more. He wishes he can just bite the bullet and tell her he likes her in a more than friend sort of way; just chance that she might like him back. But he doesn’t want to make anything awkward between them or their friends, and worse he doesn’t want to lose her as a friend.

“Are you okay?” she asks, softly, “You’ve been in here for a while.”

Oh, yeah, the lose track of time thing was also another factor he dealt with on occasion. Sometimes it took a bit to pull himself back together, cause if he didn’t, lord know what he would do. Kiss her. That’s exactly what he would do. Just kiss her.

“Yeah, I’m alright.” He replies.

“Are you sure? You look a bit…pale maybe..” she trails off, while carefully examining him.

He wants to take a step forward in hopes that she’ll take a step back because she is too close to him right now. So he takes a half a step to test it but she doesn’t move. Well, he doesn’t want to take a step back and cause further questioning but his heart is starting to race and he just needs to leave.

“I uhh…think I’m gonna head out early. Tell Arch, I call him, yeah.” He says as evenly as he can.

She doesn’t move.

And he doesn’t know what to do, so he does the only thing he can, brush by her as quickly as he can.

He can feel she is hot on his tail and when he gets to the door he barely has his hand on the knob when she hold it’s closed.

“What’s wrong?”

He shakes his head trying to avoid eye contact with her, he doesn’t exactly trust his mouth at the moment.

“Finn?”

“Please-please take a step back.” He mumbles, finally looking at her.

“What-why?” she asks, looking confused.

“I feel like I can’t breathe.” He replies.

She takes a step back and he twists the doorknob, with the door open he gives her a faint smile and steps out into the hall. He takes a few deep breaths readying himself to head down the stairs but then the door is opening. So, he does the only thing he can think of ignore it and head for the stairs but Rae catches him by the arm.

“Finn, tell me what’s going on, please?”

She looks worried and he hates when she looks worried. The last thing he wants to do is worry her.

“It’s nothing.”

“It’s not nothing. Tell me.”

He shakes his head wanting to laugh, it’s so ironic, they met in a hallway and now they’ll part in one. Sure, she’ll probably try to act like everything is fine and that they can still be friends and she’s sorry she can’t be more, but inevitably they’ll just be a lost chapter in each other’s lives.

“Finn,” she says squeezing his arm.

“I like you. OK. I like you as a friend, but more importantly I like you as more than  a friend.”

It feels like a weight as been lifted like he can breathe a little easier now that it’s out in the open and she knows.

“Finn,” she says softly and takes a small step towards him.

“Please, back up a little. It’s becoming increasingly hard not to kiss you. I don’t want to ruin our friendship.”

“Who says it would ruin our friendship if you kiss me?” she asks.

He studies her face and he can’t tell what she’s thinking, so he says, “Well, cos you like me as a friend only and it’d be weird…” he trails off.

“Says who?” she asks in an almost whisper, “Finn, do you think how I’m always touching you, letting you touch me, tracing your fingers along my thigh, holding your hand, and basically laying on you, when we are together, is something that friends do?”

“I..um..yeah?”

“No, Finn. It’s because I like you, as more than a friend.”

He definitely feels like he can’t breathe now, and like all the blood as drained from his body.

“I..what?” he babbles.  

She smirks at him, “I like you, Finn. I more than like you, okay.”

“O-okay.”

“Breathe for me, you look pale.” She smiles.

He takes a couple of breaths and nods indicating he feels better when she asks him.

“So, now, you mentioned kissing earlier, you think you’re well enough to give that a go?”

He smiles and ducks his head, when he looks back up at her she wrinkles her nose at him, and he says, “I think I can manage.”

Later he figures he’s never going to have a normal breathing pattern around her, she’ll always leaves him breathless.

Summary: Rae convinces Finn to reconcile with his family while he finds his own path.

A/N: We have reached the end. Phew. Thanks for all the lovely comments on this fic—one of my longest. I am just glad it’s over and we can move onto new and exciting things. (I have a horrible attention span.)
