Privacy and Data Ownership
This week’s topic really opened my eyes to the terms that we unknowingly agree on when being online users. It mind-boggles me to know how simple it is for us to overlook the terms of service agreements that are required when signing up for platforms online. I took the initiative to look over Tumblr’s TOS prior to signing up and I was surprised (in a good way) to see that this platform respects content created by users and allows us to maintain ownership of the content we create. Sadly, this is unlikely with other platforms which is why it’s extremely important to understand what it is that we are agreeing to when signing up. Many times, users do not get to keep ownership of their content, and even upon deletion of accounts the content stays online and is still owned by that platform. We must create a better culture of being aware of TOS.

"With little public scrutiny, the health insurance industry has joined forces with data brokers to vacuum up personal details about hundreds of millions of Americans, including, odds are, many readers of this story. The companies are tracking your race, education level, TV habits, marital status, net worth. They’re collecting what you post on social media, whether you’re behind on your bills, what you order online. Then they feed this information into complicated computer algorithms that spit out predictions about how much your health care could cost them."
