Larysa Bernhardt, "Hortus Conclusus."
Currently on view at Haven Gallery in Northport, New York is artist Larysa Bernhardt's solo exhibition, "Hortus Conclusus."
"Hortus conclusus literally translates as an enclosed garden, but it’s much more than that. Sacred spot, a place reserved for initiated, separate from everyday reality, a garden of sublime delights, a retreat from cares - its a safe heaven for all who needs it. I envisioned modern day Arcadia, Garden of Eden, and although I populated it with mythological creatures and friendly, gentle animals it is still very much a human space, a quiet retreat for souls who need an escape from crushing world we forced to live in. It’s a place of gentle illusion and harmless humor, fireflies in warm summer evenings, dancing under the sheltering canopies of old trees with bare feet touching soft moss and hair touched by moonlight. Place where art of conversation wasn’t lost forever and reason still prevails over impulse.
Textiles I used for telling my story are results of years of passionate collecting. Some vintage and some antique, they come from many corners of the world to create a tale of Hortus conclusus, allegory for a world as it could be if our dreams would come true." - Larya Bernhardt.

RYOL.
Fascinating visual adventures from Indonesian artist Ryo Laksamana, aka RYOL.
From RYOL’s representation, Galerie Zberro: “Originally from Banyuwangi in East Java, Laksamana Ryo is a recent graduate of the prestigious Institut Seni Indonesia in Yogyakarta. This young artist’s career, however, began much earlier while he was still a student, and in the past few years his artworks have been exhibited quite extensively within and beyond the borders of Indonesia.
At a glance, Ryo’s paintings are charmingly whimsical; pop surrealist artworks skillfully done in an illustrative style reminiscent of the world of anime. The visual veneer of his artworks camouflages the fact the artist broaches subjects that are in contrast quite contemporary.
Upon closer examination the subjects this young artist’s works address are far from frivolous. Among them, critiques of traditional patriarchic society, social behavior that is quick to judge others, as well as the fluidity of modern day gender and gender roles, to name a few.
The level of maturity already seen in this young artist’s aesthetics, and his deep awareness of the world around him, are indications that this artist will most definitely have a bright future as a visual artist ahead of him.”
