I still really admire Kit in this episode. When we started the series he was the character who seemed to be immature and who didn't care about anything. It turned out he just needed to become more confident. Now, Kit is probably the most reliable and mature among all the teens.

If the cinematography of this scene didn't give you enough information about how Shane felt after learning he didn't get his scholarship, Kit has understood it pretty fast and clearly that something was wrong. He reached out to Shane without hesitating and crossed the invisible wall represented by the lamp here.

Kit knows too well what is it to feel disappointed. He has been feeling this way before and he knows the bitter taste in your mouth that failure can have. He wants to let Shane knows that it's never going to be something that will stop him, as it hasn't been the case for him. He had experienced failures before and now things are better.

Kit is actually really good at reading Shane's thoughts through his actions or demeanor. He kept following him during his "quest" to find what is his vocation. Finding what you want to do in life is not easy. I wish Shane had met the old man in Thame Po who said you don't need to have a dream job to have a great life. It may have ease his worries.

At least, he isn't alone facing this because he can count on Kit to support him and listen to him. We sometimes just need one person around us who trust us to finally find the way we are looking for. At this age knowing what you want to do in life is almost impossible. Some adults don't even know what they want to do and that's okay.
