A Quick History of Autism Symbols:

1: The Puzzle Piece

Originally created by The National Autistic Society in 1963.

From Helen Allison of NAS: "The puzzle piece is so effective because it tells us something about autism: our children are handicapped by a puzzling condition; this isolates them from normal human contact and therefore they do not ‘fit in’. The suggestion of a weeping child is a reminder that autistic people do indeed suffer from their handicap."

The rainbow puzzle piece ribbon design that we see more often today was created in 1999 by Autistic Society with good intentions on spreading the differences in autism and trying to gain more acceptance.

However, over the years the puzzle piece has become disliked amongst autistics as they feel it is misrepresenting them as broken, missing something, the bright colours are infantilising and suggests that we can be cured (you just need to find the missing piece).

2: The Rainbow Infinity Symbol

Created in 2005 by the group Aspies for Freedom to represent Autistic Pride Day on June 18. It is meant to represent “diversity with infinite variations and infinite possibilities."

It has quickly gained traction and is widely used to mean all neurodiversity, not just autism (although it is more well known as an autism symbol.)

The gold infinity symbol (AU being gold on the Periodic Table of Elements) is another symbol that means autism only.
