Philosophy, moral degradation, Fandom, and the art of enjoying the small things in life. (My main things are the lore's of Tolkien's Middle-Earth and Soulsborne, but I love many things, as do we all.)

Rewatched The Good Place for the first time since s4 dropped and. Oh my god. The Good Place said "people are a result of their environment but we always have a moral responsibility to be better" and The Good Place said "every day the world gets a little more complicated and it gets a little harder to be good" and The Good Place said "even in the face of total nihilism, when nothing you do will matter, you still have to at least try. Because trying is better than the alternative" and The Good Place said "if you have bills to pay and shit to deal with you don't have time or energy to become a better person" and then The Good Place really said "people get better when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they don't " and THEN The Good Place really said "no one is irredeemable. Everyone can try to be better today than they were yesterday" AND THEN! The Good Place said "Heaven is just enough time with the people that you love" OH MY FUCKING GOD.

As a very passionate grimdark nihilist enthusiast, I think most authors of that genre would argue that those stories are supposed to hilight how correct The Good Place is. Anyone who reads Joe Abercrombie and thinks that the mean, violent "heroes" are the good guys or people that should be aspired to, have sorely missed the point. He goes out of his way to illustrate that their lives are never fulfilled, rewarding, and always feel deeply hollow. Guts (Berserk) is tricked specifically because he's desperately seeking any kind of connection, no matter how suspicious, and falls for a manipulator, but the crux of the story is that he then sets out to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. And the epitome of grimdark nihilism, Dark Souls, (narrative, not gameplay) the most quoted line besides "Praise the Sun" is "Stay safe out there, Friend. Don't you dare go hollow" and there isn't a story in those games that isn't hilighting that no matter how bad things get, we still have each other. All we have is each other.
Don't let dudebros convince you that grimdark is about power fantasies.
When Everything Everywhere All at Once said “The only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind, especially when we don’t know what’s going on"
When the Good Place said “Why choose to be good every day when there is no guaranteed reward now or in the afterlife… I argue that we choose to be good because of our bonds with other people and our innate desire to treat them with dignity. Simply put, we are not in this alone.”
When Jean-Paul Sartre said ”‘Hell is other people’ is only one side of the coin. The other side, which no one seems to mention, is also ‘Heaven is each other’. Hell is separateness, uncommunicability, self-centeredness, lust for power, for riches, for fame. Heaven on the other hand is very simple, and very hard: caring about your fellow beings.“

One of my favorite examples of this is Star Wars. Prior to Fantasy being the rage it is today, in the 70s it was the quintessential wierdo thing to avoid, with an exception for Mythology and maybe Tolkien. Not to say things weren't changing, but it was certainly not as accepted as science fiction, which was at least based in real ideas and possibilities, right?
Queue Star Wars, where an evil empire ruled by a dark lord with powers kidnaps a princess who is then rescued by a farm boy, his pirate best friend after his old, Wizard- I mean Jedi,- mentor gives him a glowing sword.
People ate it up because most people at the time were not familiar with a single fantasy trope, but liked Sci-fi.
i think it's really fun when a rly specific trope is super popular in one particular medium but in other ones it's just totally unheard of. it's the time knife. visual novel players are suuuuper used to death games but many others encountered them for the first time in squid games. the other day my mom showed me all excited the summary of a super original novel she found and it was about a girl who got reincarnated as the main character in her favorite fantasy book

As a loved husband, this goes both ways.
when I say “Let me ask my husband”, one (or both) of these things is taking place:
1. I am in a loving, happy relationship where we value and respect each other’s opinion
2. I am using this as an excuse to get out of something I don’t want to do (sorry habibi)
what is not happening here: I am being oppressed

Very Tolkien of you, Mr. Green.
At least there are trees.
When I was younger, I thought trees were a big stupid waste of time except insofar as they provide us with oxygen.
Now, when I am sad and on the edge of something worse than sad, I think, "At least there are trees."

Tolkien's letter to Milton Waldman.
Me, to the the kind souls that are my writing friends. The "I shall inflict some of this on you" resonates deeply.
