Another unfinished thought:
The Lord of the Rings isn’t just a blend of narrative styles, it’s a melding of narrative paradigms. The Elves are in a tragic story; events that involve them are characterized by beauty and sorrow. The Men are in a heroic story; their elements are weakness and strength. The Hobbits are in a comic story and their elements are fear and comfort.
Further: Merry and Pippin, having spent most of their story with Men, get an ending in the heroic paradigm: triumph, coronation, social order restored and renewed. Sam gets the hobbit ending: marriage and homecoming. And Frodo just walks straight off into an Elvish story.

Neil Gaiman once said:
“I love the idea of what Crowley's idea of Aziraphale is. His idea is a lot more heroic and standing-up to everybody than Aziraphale's idea of Aziraphale.”

“Just as Aziraphale's idea of Crowley is somebody who can be flippant and insouciant when faced with the monsters of Hell”.

“They're probably each rather better at dealing with things than the other one is, but that's what they think the other one is probably like, and I love that”.

Well, I love that too.

This is beautiful, but I also think this speaks to something integral to the painting of Ariandel.
The game presents the painted world of Ariandel as hideaway for forlorn creatures and makes it feel like a kindness to leave it be. Sister Friede says as much. But if you talk to Yuria (before defeating Friede) she says that there is a sweet scent upon you and to be careful because "kindness can wear upon one's principles"
If Yuria is viewed only as an antagonist, this line probably meant nothing beyond illustrating her villainy. But if you see her as a force seeking an end to the cycle at any cost, you might wonder how Sister Friede's kindness is wearing upon her principles. How?
Well, first, notice who it is she cares for. The corvians aren't like other corvians we've ever encountered before. They look like chicks that grew older but never grew up, like babies that have rotted. A horrible image, but one that seems fitting. The painted world is a made up world, one that offers comfort in exchange for rotting away, a place where you needn't think about anything you don't want to and where your ideas never grow up, but simply grow older.
If that's true, then what about Sister Friede and Sir Vilhelm?
Sister Friede has imposed a soft form of dogma, let me be and I'll let you be. She represents a kind of belief that allows you comfort. She is what has gotten you through til now. Whereas Sir Vilhelm is the dogmatic defense, a protection to foreign ideas, flames that would disrupt the world. He tells you this by how he describes the player character:
"I've seen your kind, time and time again.
Every fleeing man must be caught. Every secret must be unearthed.
Such is the conceit of the self-proclaimed seeker of truth."
He fights for Sister Friede, to protect the peace she has brought to the painted world. But beyond him, just beyond, is a child's curiosity waiting to be fed. She is the one that the painted world has shut away, at first to protect, and then to keep quiet. And it is she, who once the world is burned away, brings forth a new world for all.
I love this story, and this painting shows the most beautiful parts of it.

Mr Gaiman what is your favorite ice cream flavor?
I think the ritual of stabbing Julius Caesar on the Ides of March is an important Tumblr tradition that needs to be maintained for coming generations.

I honestly think the scenes of greatest intimacy in Austen are those moments of unspoken solidarity between people when they have to deal with a difficult person: Emma and Mr. Knightley handling the crisis of snow at Christmas, Darcy and Elizabeth curtailing Caroline Bingley's bitchiness to protect Georgiana in the music room, Wentworth seeing the child clinging to Anne's neck and wordlessly removing him, Edmund and Fanny dancing silently together at the end of a long ball, just enjoying being introverts together away from the Crawfords, Col. Brandon fetching Mrs. Dashwood because she would be of comfort to Marianne and Elinor...
