Alrighty, let’s sit down and have a little chit-chat about this thing called bisexuality, shall we? 

Bisexuality is the attraction towards two or more genders. It is not defined by whether a person has a sexual/romantic preference or not, their sexual/romantic experience or the lack of it, or their current sexual/romantic partner. 

If a person identifies as bisexual, they are bisexual. Period.

So when you demean the importance of representation in media through a pairing that consists of a bisexual character and a potentially heterosexual character, you’re erasing bisexuals. You’re calling it ‘not good enough representation’ and ‘just another het ship’. And when the same character is in a same-sex relationship, they, and the relationship they entered, are labelled ‘gay’, and it’s suddenly the most groundbreaking portrayal ever seen on tv.

And with that action, you’re saying that bisexuals are not queer enough if they are not in a same sex relationship. You’re saying that bi visibility doesn’t matter. 

Guess what? That’s bi erasure.

When you take a character who has shown attraction towards the opposite gender and ship them with a same-sex character and label them gay, that is not just ignoring the canon.

It’s also bi/poly/pan erasure.

When you tell a person who identifies as a bisexual that they will eventually pick a side, that is gross, offensive and biphobic. A person settling in a relationship with a person they love, regardless of that person’s gender, does not erase their sexual identity.

When you tell a bisexual person that they’re more likely to cheat on their partner, because they are not monosexuals, is still gross, offensive and biphobic.

Engaging in any stereotypes reduces bisexuals to nothing but two dimensionals and it’s gross, offensive and biphobic.

Whenever you tell a bisexual person anything that demonizes, erases or invalidates them you are erasing their sexuality and are being biphobic.

And last, but not the least - there’s no such thing as bi-privilege. The bi community is erased and invalidated from both the queer community and heterosexual people. It’s an endless cycle of one side telling you that you’re gay and the other telling you that you’re straight and ‘straight-passing’ and both telling you that you’re not good enough and that you have to pick a side.
