Mike needs to be the hero in a relationship btw. He could never be happy with someone who can outdo him, who would make him be complacent and passive, which is exactly what El makes him when they’re a couple. He doesn’t want to be the Lois Lane to El’s Superman. He wants to be the knight in shining armor, an active hero who actively rescues and actively loves. And he has to be with somebody who wants and accepts that same dynamic, which Will does. Will is happy to be rescued and to passively receive Mike’s love.
