recent ask makes me realize how poor of a grasp some people have on Saïx’s character

His entire deal is that he started out as an introspective and withdrawn kid who nonetheless had such an intense sense of empathy that he threw his lot in with the organization for the sake of a person he barely knew who was suffering

He lashes out because his relationships have been systematically destroyed specifically by the very man he’s forced to pretend he has fealty to (Xemnas), while the only other person he has any connection left with (Axel) abandons him

He is spiteful and cruel toward Xion in particular because from his point of view, she is literally an inanimate object, a faceless mannequin, and he cannot for the life of him comprehend why either Roxas but especially Axel would express anything approaching care for it when it is obviously beneath even the lowliest of Dusks, a shambling facsimile of a Nobody that can’t even fulfill its most basic functions.

By the time of KH2 every remaining personal connection he has is totally destroyed and he has nothing left but to sink into the clutches of the man that’s responsible for all of it, so… what’s left but for him to crash out? He’s a piece of shit but if you read between the lines, the pleasure he’s taking in tormenting Sora is transparently obvious projection about his relationship with Axel along with spite for Roxas, who he’s personally taking out his anger for his ruined life on. Obviously this isn’t a nice trait but you have to consider that the dude has been marinating in intense cult trauma for a decade at this point

…And yet, when Xemnas praises Saïx for his ability to manipulate and exploit the doubts of others, his shoulders fall.

So why on earth would a character like this get a redemption arc, you ask? Easy. He reconnected with his heart following his death. Saïx’s missing heart is such an earth-shatteringly fundamental element of his character, something he takes so much more seriously than any other character, that it shouldn’t be surprising in the least that he would change drastically the minute he gets his heart back, even if it’s only for a fleeting moment.

If it wasn’t already obvious from the context of KH3 itself, Saïx’s character file clarifies and discusses how his acts of atonement in KH3 were not necessarily motivated by wanting to save Roxas or Xion for their own sake: he discusses how he came to see himself as a person who lacked any sort of inherent worth unless Axel needed him. All of his cruelty toward Xion and Roxas and the rest were acts of projection due to extraordinary trauma, because he saw himself as a broken, useless person more so than anyone else. If Xion is a “mirror that reflects” others, Saïx being the only one that sees her as a puppet tells you everything you need to know about him. Every nasty comment Saïx ever makes toward another person is first and foremost a negative description of himself.

So the whole reason he redeems himself, it’s that he was trying to prove that there was still some part of his old self--the young Isa who was a kind person in spite of his aloof nature--that was worth saving. That he wanted to apologize to the boy he used to be by disavowing everything he ever worked toward in the Organization, by sticking his neck out and putting Roxas and Xion before himself, by giving Lea back the people who made his life better in exchange for his own life.

Saïx’s story is that of a child who is made into a monster through no fault of his own, and who is brought back into the light by reconnecting with his own capacity for love.
