5 Effective Note Taking Methods for CA Aspirants - IndigoLearn

It’s a new year. And we do hope your CA preparations are in full swing. This blog will help take your note-taking skills to the next level. We at IndigoLearn strive to make our online content notes-friendly but it’s always helpful to jot down things on paper.  Investigate and experiment with these five methods for yourself. They are sure to help you memorize terms better as well as revise key-points before the CA examination. Remember, at the end of the day, you’re taking down notes for yourself. 1.      The Cornell Method

You can use the Cornell Method to organise your notes during your economics and strategic management class – this involves dividing your notebook into a smaller left column and wider right-hand column. In the right column you will take notes during the class, and after the class you can assign keywords, cues, summaries and any questions about the material in the left-hand column. This is highly recommended for last minute revision.

When reviewing these notes, cover up the right-hand column, and try and recall the information associated with those prompts. When you think you’ve covered all the key points, check how much you accurately remembered. This is highly recommended for last minute revision for fiscal policy and trade negotiations exams.

2. The Mapping Method

Are you a visual learner? This method is for you. Write the main topic of the class in the center of your notes, and write the related information around this topic. Lines can be used to connect different ideas to each other, and how they relate to the main topic. This will form out be a web of keywords and information.

You can test yourself by covering your connections and trying to memorise how these pieces of information connect to each other, and why. This technique helps you revise summaries or even at guest lectures, as you generally won’t be familiar with the content or structure during the latter. For example, International trade can be mapped out and understood better with this method.

3. The Charting / Categorizing Method

This method is for the ones who can’t wait to plan it all out. Before class starts, select the topics that will be covered on that day, and write these in a side column (leaving yourself enough space for each category). Throughout the class, you can note down information connected with these topics. This also helps with grouping related ideas together for retention.

4. Symbols, abbreviations, and shorthand

If you don’t have the very useful skill of shorthand (few of us do!), then making up your own symbols can be helpful for taking notes at speed. First, assign easy to read (and draw) symbols, for instance, a square to indicate key topics that will be essential for your exam.

They can be anything, as long as they have meaning for you. The same applies to abbreviations. Eg: CA- Chartered Accountancy, GDP- Gross Domestic Product etc

5. Split Page Method

Like the Cornell Method, divide your page into two halves. On the left, you have your main ideas, and on the right, you have your related and secondary ideas. Place the most important notes on the left-hand column, and develop or connect with similar ideas on the right.

Or you could have class notes on the left and your own thoughts or actions on the right. This also helps with organising your study time, as you will be able to see which topics or concepts require more thought or problem-solving.

1. Learning brings out the art but revision brings out the artist

If you’re dead serious about clearing your CA exams in your first attempt then revise, revise, and revise. Yes, make sure to revise your syllabus three times. It is important to permanently store information in your brain so as to make an easy and quick recall of things during the exam. It’s thus best to try and finish your entire syllabus thoroughly in one and a half month so that you have one full month remaining just for the revision.

2. Prepare your strong subjects for exemption

Now, this is a clever hack, so make sure you read this part carefully.  Prepare one subject from each group for exemption, this will help you cover your aggregate percent requirement. If you feel theory is your strong point, then, prepare Law in the first group.

Also, students who are preparing for CS along with CA should certainly try to get an exemption in Law. If Accounting is your stronger suite, then nothing better like that. Accounting is majorly considered as the best subject for exemption. If all this while you were in a dilemma about which subjects to pick for exemptions, then, we suppose you should breathe a sigh of relief now.

In Second Group, Subjects like Advanced Accounting & Financial Management are very scoring and could try for exemption in them.

3. Prepare your own revision module and stick to it

Once you’re through with your subject you will be clear enough to decide which question takes how much of your time and which are the ones that can be solved just by a read. Keep this in mind as it will come handy during your revision regime.

Make sure to practice each question by writing during your first revision and simultaneously mark the ones that can be solved just by reading.

Your second revision need not focus on solving all questions as you’ve already marked the ones that can be solved just by reading. This time, mark the questions that require extra attention. We’re sure, you have decoded the pattern by now. Practice the most tricky one in your third revision as the rest you’ve already mastered by now.

4. Clear all your concepts

This is one rule that we have always been taught in schools – clear your concepts. This is is the rule of life and your accountancy. Whether it’s Costing, FM, Accounting, Advance Accounting, Direct Tax, Indirect Tax or any other subject; make sure to clarify all your concepts.

Call that friend who is good with a particular subject and drill him till you get your concepts cleared.  Don’t worry if you have not gone through the case laws in DT, IDT, and Law; if your concepts are clear you can still present your answer in a proper and legit way.

5. Do not mock the mock papers

A lot of CA aspirants feel that mock test papers are just a wastage of actual time. No, that’s where you’re going wrong. Not only mock papers are an easy medium of revising your syllabus but they also give you a glimpse of your strong and weak points.. You will understand examiners point of view, what they are looking for in the answer and the most importantly they help you get a handle on time management. Make a schedule to write one paper (preferably a past examination question) every Sunday.

 1. Be your own master, follow your own course

Often times we are sailing through our preparations, everything seems to be falling and storing in the right centers of the brain and all of a sudden you get a call from your friend regarding some doubt about a completely different subject/topic. And, what happens next? You’re off the rails. You are now wondering how and why you didn’t start with that subject? Am I doing this the wrong way?

Everyone has their time and preferences. Not everyone follows the same study routine. It is thus important for you to keep yourself unperturbed from such worthless thoughts. Avoid taking calls while you’re in your zone. Make a note of things you want to clarify with a friend and make sure to discuss them when both of you are free. This not only helps you to be dedicated to your schedule but also respects another person’s time and study routine.

2. Break your study material into smaller chunks

We’re sure you’ve heard about this famous quote, ‘every journey begins with a single step’. You have already set foot in your CA journey, now it is important for you to take a step-by-step approach. Do not burden yourself by taking the whole syllabus together rather break down the syllabus into small parts. Set timely goals to finish these smaller parts. As small as, “I will check my phone only once I’m done with this part”. These smaller goals act as great confidence boosters. Doing things in a calm and well-organized manner reduces the scope of mistakes and stress.

3. Make a Time Table

Even while preparing for exams at home, some discipline is required and time is the best teacher. Make your own time table, pick the timings that work best for you. While some are night owls and find their concentration is at peak at night, others might not feel the same. Know your strengths and weakness and work on the timetable accordingly.

Divide your timetable based on subjects and not just time. Your weak points that require more time, your strong suits that are good with just a revision. Make notes while studying and don’t forget to include some free time in your routine which you can use to refresh and re-energize your brain.

 4. Shut your ears to the surrounding hearsay

The problem with peers is that they want you to believe whatever information they’re giving you. No credentials, no credibility and if you ask them the source, the only reply you get is, “trust me, bro!”. Well, don’t trust them, bro.  Concentrate on what you’re doing and have trust in yourself. It is justifiable to doubt yourself at times considering that you’re already in a very vulnerable state. But whenever this thought come to your mind, just shake it off and continue with your schedule for the day.

5. Be patient, everything’s coming together

If it was easy everyone would do it. It’s okay if you went out to meet a friend and missed your routine for a day. There will be days when you won’t be able to stick to your timetable, there will be times when you feel weak without motivation. Relax! everyone is fighting around you. Do Number of Attempts in CA Really Matter?

Do the number of attempts a student takes to clear the CA exam really matter?

Well, this is a question that can never be answered outright with a straight ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. It requires a lot more research and many other factors have to be taken into consideration before arriving at a conclusion. It also depends on what aspirations a student holds and the career prospects that each one looks at. The topic of discussion is never about the pros and cons of clearing in fewer attempts than more. Clearing in the least possible number of attempts is what any student aims for. We are concerned with, if the number of attempts taken to clear the exam have a negative impact on the career or not.

Is it really a myth?

Ok, so let’s get to the point straight. If any of you have your resumes uploaded on any job portal on the website, you would have seen the requirements the companies post. There are companies which add to their list of requirements, the number of attempts the candidate should have cleared the exam in. So this means that certain jobs are handy only for the early birds. Certain MNCs and Big 4 firms are quite particular about the number of attempts. This is because they judge the student’s ability and intelligence based on the number of attempts. In addition they could also look at the number of attempts as a barometer for the passion and seriousness that a candidate has towards his / her  career .

If we look at the scenario constructively, we realize that the number of students choosing the course and thereby the number of pass outs has increased dramatically over a period of time. This also means that the number of students passing out in the first attempt has increased by quite a number. So, it is but obvious that many MNCs do look for candidates who cleared all the exams in one or two attempts. You can also find many job postings in various job portals asking for the same.

Campus placements:

If one has attended campus interviews arranged by ICAI, one would have observed that the number of attempts do matter in thee interviews. Student resumes are sorted based on the number of attempts. Also, on the form filled by students there is a field that asks for the number of attempts.

An equally important question is number of attempts in Advanced Accounting IPCC or Final – what is considered important for the first job?

There are many instances of students who took many attempts to clear IPCC and happened to clear CA final in one go. There have been very many cases where IPCC took few attempts while final felt like a very tedious job. Number of attempts in IPCC also do matter as there are quite a few job profiles that expressly mention the restriction on the number of attempts. However, the attempts in CA Final are far more important as these are most recent ones prior to your job.

The brighter side!

Once you are a CA you definitely earn all the respect and reputation for yourself even if it is after many trials and failures. Nevertheless, those clearing in less attempts are preferred in most cases. This does not necessarily mean that you give up on your dreams just because you have experienced failure. Nor does this mean that you must be dejected at the missed chances. All what matters is how you plan your time to reach the goal.

If you could just not make it through due to any reason that you have a valid excuse for, learn from the mistakes and do not just get disheartened.

However, for all of those who take more attempts in CA Final, believe me life has not closed the door on you. Ultimately, what decides whether your number of attempts matter or not is what you want to do going further. If you wish to get into Big 4 or bag a good job through campus placements, a maximum of 3 attempts can do that for you. Otherwise, things could get difficult for sure.

Again, let’s get this clear that it is not the end of the road. You only find difficulty in entering these organizations, but you can still get a decent job outside of these as well. The key to this is, your knowledge of key subjects that you have prepared for in CA Final. You should be able to demonstrate to the employer that you have got that extra edge that forces the employer to hire you over others. You need to keep yourself updated with the latest international developments and practices in order to stay in the race.

Landing your first job after CA has quite something to do with the number of attempts but later in time when you wish to switch job, all what the employer concerns himself / herself with is about the kind of an employee you are. They would look for performance in your previous job,  learnings from your last employment and the skills that you possess.

Employers are more concerned with the gaps in your resume if you cannot give them valid reasons. Though you take reasonably long to clear your CA, if you can convince the employer that you have good hands-on experience during that period, you would definitely be looked upon as an eligible candidate by many. The number of attempts might matter during the initial phase but your performance in the workplace has the last laugh. Thus, all you need to learn is to plan your career wisely.

To practice as an auditor:

The number of attempts taken do not really make any difference if you opt to start practicing as an auditor or join any Audit Firm post CA. A good network, people skills, decision-making ability, leadership skills and good communication skills help you establish a successful career as a practicing chartered accountant. So, if your long-term plan is to start practicing and you CA Final is taking you long time, you can always utilize this time to build the required network of clients and win their confidnece thereby using all this time taken to clear your exam to your advantage.

The Final word

When it comes to job after the first job, experience is the key factor. It could so happen that a student who cleared CA in 2-3 attempts might get promoted to a better position before someone who cleared in first attempts. This is because your career growth depends purely on your performance and your dedication to work decides your chances for being promoted. As you become the key asset of a company, you become the money maker too!

With time the significance of the number of attempts taken withers away.
