Today, 98 years ago, the proletariat of Bavaria proclaim the Soviet-Republic of Munich. On the same day, 7 April 1919, the "Bavarian Red Army" was founded. The SPD* government fled to Bamberg in order to attack the Soviet-Repiublic again and again with the support of right-wing Freikorps*. A coup against the Soviet-Republic on 13 April 1919 could be repulsed by the comrades. Despite some victories of the Red Army, the government troops and Freikorps* units succeeded in marching into Munich at the beginning of May. On the way to the center of Munich, Freikorps units led massacres to the civilian population, the government forces led by the SPD did not intervene. »Proletariat of Bavaria unite happily. Socialists plus Independents plus Communists firmly hammered together, agreed with peasants. Clerical are well-meaning to us. Liberal bourgeoisie as a Prussian agent completely disarmed.« -Radio-signal from Munich, 10 April 1919 Today we commemorate the courageous workers and soldiers of Munich. We commemorate the innocent victims of "white terror". Comrades, your fight was not in vain! We promise: the fight continues! Long live Eugene Leviné! Long live Zenzl & Erich Mühsam! Long live Ernst Toller! Long live Rudolf Eglhofer and all those who had to leave their lives for the idea of a better world. München 1919 - unforgotten! *SPD = Social Democratic Party of Germany Freikorps = In the aftermath of World War I and the German Revolution of 1918–19, Freikorps were raised as right-wing paramilitary militias to fight against the newly formed Weimar Republic as well as their left-wing counterparts.
