Field of Haematology Welcomes First Blade Doctor

History was made today as Tokyo University presented the blade 'Kaishakunin' with its PhD in haematology, the first ever instance of a sentient blade earning an academic degree.

The Muramasa forged blade faced significant opposition over its request to study at the university, over fears about the curse common to Muramasa blades that require the blade to draw blood before they may return to their sheathes. However, 'Kaishakunin'- or 'Dr. Kai', as they prefer to be called- decided that this curse could instead be made into a blessing; as he discovered that it also allowed the blade to perform near perfect diagnosis on all matters related to the blood and circulatory system, including cancer, diabetes and sickle cell anaemia.

"I'm so happy to have a purpose outside of that for which I was forged," Doctor 'Kai' told the media. "Blades like me have long been stigmatised for a curse outside our control, and I am eternally grateful for the chance to break that stigma and use my skills to help those in need."

Concept: cursed blade rehabilitation center. Destroying a sentient weapon is expensive and highly unethical, so adventurers bring them to the center where highly trained staff can care for them and eventually find them forever homes. It turns out most cursed weapons are products of trauma and are not strictly evil themselves. Some blades turn out to be fiercely protective companions. Others don't even want to be weapons at all, finding joy in simple work like blacksmithing or farming. Most blades just need to be loved.

"All this digital art stuff, you know, it goes way over my head. But my wife, y'see, she has this cousin Lou. Now Lou's a real smart cookie, knows everything from Blender to Clip Studio, but the one thing they won't touch is AI. Says it wastes a whole lot of electricity for something that only looks good at a glance.

See, a computer, it can't think through things like a human can. You or I, when we look at a drawing of an apple, we can compare it to real apples we've seen. If you show us a drawing of some orange thing with spikes coming out every which way, well, we can tell you that sure doesn't look like an apple.

But a computer? All a computer can do is look at pictures of apples. And if you give that computer enough pictures of apples that are a little bit orange, or a little bit bumpy, well. It might just decide that spiky orange thing is an apple too. It takes a whole lot of pictures of apples to get the computer mostly good at guessing when things are apples or not.

Now, that's bad enough when you just want your computer to tell you what it sees. When you want a computer to make an image, though, that's where Lou says you really run into trouble. You put a piece of paper in front of me, give me a pencil, and tell me to draw an apple, it won't win any awards. But it'll be a new drawing. Nobody's ever drawn that exact same drawing the exact same way before.

But if you take your computer that's gotten pretty good at guessing when things are apples, and you tell it "okay, draw me an apple", it can't make a completely new drawing of an apple. Instead, it'll take the pictures you've given it and mash 'em together. Maybe, at the end, you won't be able to tell which pictures it used, but if you ask it for enough drawings of apples, you'll start seeing patterns...

I'm sorry, I'll get out of your hair. I know you have to get back to your painting.

Anywho, last year was full of Rumbleslam, terrain building and the beginnings of preparing for running a Mecha RPG, all of which are going to carry on into this year! Also, I'm gonna try and get my act together and start streaming together and not get overwhelmed again :p

I maaay have found a new Mecha rpg system (The Mecha Hack, for those interested) and I maaay have been falling super hard for it and printing a ton of 6mm scale mechs and vehicles for it.

Somehow I keep forgetting how much I love 6mm scale. It can be detailed as all hell, but it's so small there's no pressure to make sure you get adsolutely everything right. You only do as much as you are comfortable with amd it always feels like a flex. :)
