It’s amazing she lived so long. Her grandmother, Cora, nearly made it to four as well.
I’m so glad she lived such a happy long life with you.
Peridot left us today. There were no alternative treatments that would improve her quality of life, we would only be prolonging the inevitable.
She went within seconds of the shot, which tells me she was ready to go and was tired of fighting to move around to eat or drink, and she went quietly being held by my spouse, who was Her Person.
Peri lived to nearly see her 4th birthday, which is amazing for a rescue who was indiscriminately bred by a hoarder. She was quiet, but full of personality and love to give in the form of snuggles and copious kisses. She walked everywhere on her tiptoes, and my spouse named her Princess Tippy-Taps, along with Bean Queen and Snootles. She will be sorely missed.

Manx rats are getting pretty popular =/
because it’s totally fine for an animal that relies on its tail for balance and temperature control to just not have a tail.

Not sure if any Texas rat people follow me but fair warning, Jozzy of Jozzy’s Rat Pack is Pro Trump and Anti Vax. She also is friends with someone who went an on really racist rant last month.
Jozzy is also reposting really racist comments in regards to the virus situation.
I highly suggest steering clear of her.

hmm, maybe I should make a tutorial on how I make bin cages? If the bin is big enough, they make fine long term housing as long as the rats aren’t chewers lol

I realized I haven’t talked about my rat breeding on this blog in a very long time. You can follow my instagram for pictures. We just had our first 2020 litter and are expecting the 2nd one to drop on the 24th.

If you’re talking about building a cage from scratch, I highly urge you to reconsider. That is hard to do properly and most people use wood to build custom cages, and that really isn’t the ideal material.
For pre-built cages, I’d recommend Martin’s Cages and Critter Nations. There are no other brands of cage I trust at all. But that is for the US. If you’re in Europe, I know there are a bunch of high quality cages. I just don’t know the brands.
Rats are such wonderful pets. I’m glad you’ve decided to pursue that route! Please feel free to ask me for any advice. I’ve been keeping rats for over seven years and breeding for about a year now.
Ive followed you for years(on other blogs) and I've recently come to the conclusion that rats are the right pet for me. I was wondering if you could give me any tips/ rat blogs I could consult for cage building advice? Ive been stalking your rat tag but I am curious about other resources! Thank you much! 💝
I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the blog :) And congrats on deciding the right pets for you. Rats are amazing little critters
I unfortunately don’t know any good resources off the top of my head for cage building… But maybe some of my followers will have some good advice for you!

I found one of my mice choking the other day and thought the video I took would be interesting and educational to people. True choking like this is very rare in mice and rats and this was the first time I’d experienced it. At first I thought he was showing very late stage upper respiratory infection symptoms, but I remembered I had checked on everyone within the last hour or so and he was perfectly fine then. He also was doing a lot of pawing at his mouth and generally looked very distressed. And even though you can hear him gasping for air in the video, he wasn’t making the usual warbles/wheezes you’d expect from a URI. All that combined led me to the conclusion that he had to have been choking.
There isn’t much literature on what to do with a choking rodent but what I could find said that if they can still breathe with the obstruction, they can often clear it themselves without outside assistance, but they should be taken to a vet if they’re still struggling to breathe after a few hours. If they are completely unable to breathe one can try the swing method, which uses centrifugal force to dislodge the obstruction, or try a more traditional Heimlich maneuver.
Luckily this boy managed to clear the obstruction after a couple of hours and now he is back to his normal self. He didn’t have a name before this, so I decided after this near death experience he needed one. I’ve named him Phoenix!

It’s been a hard two months rodent-wise. Lost my gerbil, lost my hamster... a few young rats have tumors. They’re only a year old! Way too young to get tumors. =/
Also lost my betta fish...

Thanks for reblogging but this post is a year old and all these rats have homes. :)
Rats in need of homes in DFW area
We still have two males and seven female rats in need of homes. I got them as a group from someone who was unwilling to give them up in smaller groups and therefore was having trouble finding a home for so many.
Some were a bit sick when I got them, but seem to be fully recovered now. Due to their rough start in life, they can be very jumpy. Some more so than others. There are a few girls who are very easy to handle and some of the rest bolt out of your hand and need patience in getting them socialized and comfortable with people.
I don’t have individual pictures right now, but can get them upon request. They were born in October of 2018.
Included is a map of the area in which we are willing to travel to meet. We can bring several rats for you to pick them out in person.
We are charging a rehoming fee to help weed out people looking for feeders or cheap/free/throwaway pets. And I ask many questions before agreeing to give the rats away as I want to make sure it is a good match. The rehoming fee is $20 for two and $5 for each additional rat.
We do NOT sell single rats.
Lastly, I want to reiterate that these rats need patience. I would prefer most go to experienced homes, but there are a few I think could be good for a beginner as long as they are willing to be patient and work with the rats. All of the rats ARE friendly, but it can take time for them to be comfortable enough to act friendly. They are curious and will rush to greet me when I open the cage. They will be great pets to anyone willing to give them time, patience, and kindness.

daily reminder that scented bedding is not safe/suitable for any caged pets. they have to spend most of their life, including sleeping, in that space. it doesn’t matter how “natural” or “pleasant” the scent is and it doesn’t matter how mild it may seem to you as a huge creature with significantly less fine tuned senses.
this also applies to strongly aromatic wood shavings, and can apply to other specific brands of unscented paper or even hardwood shavings if they smell strongly out of the bag and this smell does not dissipate.
