The Hebrew in the first slide is the two Israels close to my heart and my faith, am yisrael and eretz yisrael. I wanted to emphasise the distinction between these concepts and the modern state of Israel, מדינת ישראל or Medinat Israel. A few things are referred to as Israel within Judaism, and none of them are the same as the modern political state most people think of when they hear the word Israel today. This is important to emphasise because the conflation is very often used by those trying to claim that opposition to Medinat Israel is antisemitic. “Israel” or am yisrael is the Jewish people, and our history is rich and beautiful beyond the crimes of a state and political movement using our faith and pain as branding.

The second design was something I hoped could help convey a message of hope in such a seemingly hopeless time. I believe that resistance is holy and that goodness will always prevail in the end, but the path to tikkun olam is incredibly difficult and we should lift each other up whenever we can. I love the photograph I used, I don’t know the names of any of the young women it shows but I love them and they are in my prayers.
