I’ve been tailoring my Samejima Gabu & Taiga headcanons (mainly their family and life at home) for a while, but I’ve finally decided to post it here..
From what we know, the only time there was a mention of their parents was when Taiga said “let’s go back.. to our home” after Gabu got defeated by Sho at the X-tower..
And Gabu’s answer was “why go back? So we can go to school everyday like usual, listen to our parents, and go back to that boring life!?”
He said “oya” in Japanese meaning parent, so it’s not clear if he’s talking about one or both, but I’m assuming they’re both present (at least physically)..
And the fact that he said that suggests that maybe he actually listens to his parents now?
The whole school incident (eating the students pudding, pranking teachers in the middle of class, taking out the school equipments..etc) happened when he was first year in elementary school, probably when he was 7..
We didn’t see any of Taiga in that flashback..
And the one who even mentioned it was Makoto, and what was Gabu’s reaction? “Stop digging these old stories”!
Which indicates that he isn’t proud of what he did back then, that he’s older now, that he doesn’t do these things anymore!
Why? What made him go from the school jester to a boy who actually listens to his parents?!
Maybe at first his parents ignored this chaos and paid the school for the damages just so they would “shut up” but that didn’t solve the actual problem, Gabu is doing it because he wants his parents attention but what they did by just ignoring him and priotrizing the school made his behaviour worse, so he kept trying something crazier..
Now Taiga’s role in this is a mystery, he was either watching in silence, unbothered like it doesn’t concern him, or he tried to warn Gabu of the consequences but didn’t do more than that..
Taiga was also young at the time probably 8 so maybe he didn’t think that he needed to do something if his parents just ignored it..
But then Gabu overdid it.. and his parents had to interfere..
What they did? They probably didn’t simply punish him, I think they yelled at him and probably gave him a physical punishment like smacking his face or even beating him..
It was horrible for Gabu, but also traumatizing for Taiga..
This is probably why Taiga avoids conflict and tries to keep peace, and maybe after that everytime Gabu tries to do something he’s there to remind him how horrible the punishment can be!
And I think Gabu actually listened, he seemed respectful to his brother in episode 1 before X-zone..
But Taiga also lets him do whatever he wants if doesn’t get him in trouble with the adults, especially his parents!
Hence why he let him be the leader of Shark Tooth.
They both found their freedom at X-zone..
Everything can go their way, no parents can stop them now!
But Taiga realized that this going too far, rather than proving their power, they’re just harming people at this point!

Omae: Complexity of Self-Expression and Intimacy with the Japanese “You”
The anime adaption of chapter 322 is rapidly approaching, so I wanna talk about something really interesting: as far as I can tell, Izuku is the only person Katsuki has ever used the pronoun omae (おまえ) towards in-canon. Furthermore, he has only used omae towards Izuku on three occasions.
The first time is after Deku vs. Kacchan 2 in chapter 120.
The second time is right after his apology in chapter 322. (Katsuki actually uses omae four times in a row in this scene.)
(We'll get to the third time later, just you wait.)
Why does Katsuki address Izuku differently in these scenes? To answer this, we’re gonna commit some language nerdery.
First, let’s be real about the fact that Japanese pronouns can be complicated. There are a ton of them. You learn the common uses—like you could say that, broadly, omae tends to be used by guys for their friends and romantic partners. But the reality is that in a high-context language like Japanese, pronouns can come across wildly differently depending on who uses it, to whom, with what tone, and in what context.
It is difficult to generalize real-life usage, so to be clear, I am talking about MHA as a piece of media. I could try to tell you that omae is rude but also friendly but also condescending but also comedic but also confrontational but also affectionate—and so on, but that wouldn’t help you understand what Katsuki’s omae to Izuku means and why it feels significant.
The thing is, Izuku and Katsuki can each say omae and mean completely different things, because their normal way of speaking tells us how to interpret their words.
When Izuku speaks, he is polite and considerate. He uses the boyish first-person pronoun boku (僕). In Japanese, avoiding second-person pronouns is the polite thing to do; you use the person’s surname and an appropriate suffix instead, and this is the tactic Izuku uses to address others. When he does say “you,” it is usually the familiar kimi (君) towards Katsuki.
We see Izuku use omae in only a few circumstances: he uses it towards himself during inner monologues when he is trying to figure out what to do or compel himself to act, and he uses it when he faces All For One.
Both of these involve what I think of as “tough talk”—Izuku talks tough to himself to push past his fears and be a hero. With AFO, he is talking to a villain, someone he has to defeat. From someone like Izuku who speaks with such politeness and humility, omae reads as aggressive and confrontational.
Katsuki, on the other hand, is always aggressive and confrontational. He uses the masculine, somewhat boastful first-person pronoun ore (俺) and the second-person pronoun temee (てめえ) towards just about everybody. Temee is an extremely rude, combative word; Japanese descriptions usually point out that it reads like fightin’ words—it’s what you’d call an opponent, someone you are confronting, challenging, or belittling. As mentioned, you’re supposed to avoid “you” words to be polite, so the fact that Katsuki whips out temee constantly and makes up insulting nicknames instead of using anybody’s real name is just like, damn, dude!
Unlike Izuku, Katsuki sounds like he is challenging everyone all the time. This means that, coming from him, omae actually seems gentler.
After Deku vs. Kacchan 2, he opens his sentence with omae, and Izuku looks startled by this.
They just had a huge, emotional fistfight, and Katsuki… isn’t addressing him as an opponent, like he always has before. For once, he is addressing Izuku not as his enemy, but his equal.
This scene is the first time Katsuki properly grapples with the truth of their mutual weaknesses and comes to an understanding about it. It leaves him frustrated and unsure, but he walks away seeing himself and Izuku as being on the same side.
Because he takes All Might's words to heart: they are two halves of what makes a hero. They need to learn from each other and push each other to truly reach their best—as rivals, not enemies.
In chapter 322, Katsuki talks Izuku through how he felt about him all these years. He goes over all the things he's had to face to see how wrong he was, to see his own weakness and Izuku's strength. The whole time, he uses the "you" word he always has: temee.
But when it comes time to tell Izuku his true feelings, he calls Izuku by his given name, apologizes, and then right away he says this:
This is a direct call-back to the core question that Katsuki posed to Izuku during Deku vs. Kacchan 2: "Is my way of admiring All Might wrong?"
The second half to that question has always been, implicitly, "Does that mean yours is right?"
Here, Katsuki acknowledges Izuku fully as All Might's successor and affirms that Izuku's path is not wrong, using omae to tell him so. And then he uses it three more times to convince Izuku to come back with them and fight together, "because saving people is how we win."
To me, omae in this scene comes across with such softness. He's speaking with more humility than we've ever seen, both in what he's conveying and his word choice. (There is a whole other conversation to be had about Katsuki's word choice for "I'm sorry," but that is for a different time.)
This omae is not just a sign that he sees Izuku as his equal, it's expressing care for him. Katsuki sacrificed his life for Izuku, telling him, "Stop trying to win this on your own." He is trying so hard to make Izuku understand: Come back, I was wrong. Come back, I care about you.
Which brings us to the third time Katsuki uses omae: chapter 362.
That's right, the infamous "Can I still catch up to you?" / "Can I still reach you?" line uses omae.
Here's the thing that's unique about this omae: it's in Katsuki's head. This is internal monologue; he isn't talking out loud to Izuku, he isn't trying to convey something to him face-to-face, he is just thinking about Izuku.
The word choice isn't for anyone else's benefit or any external purpose: this is just how Katsuki sees him.
I can't overstate how soft, vulnerable, and sincere this moment is for Katsuki. And what gets me about him thinking of Izuku as omae is, it makes me wonder, "How long has he thought of Izuku this way?"
When did Izuku stop being temee in his head?
Changing how you address someone is a big deal in Japanese. Whether it's a name or suffix change (Deku -> Izuku) or a pronoun change (temee -> omae), it represents a significant shift in the emotional dynamics of a relationship.
It crops up a lot in media as a dramatic moment of intimacy, sometimes even being a part of love confessions. This heightened drama is exactly what we see with Katsuki's apology when he calls him Izuku.
Katsuki addresses only Izuku with his given name and omae, and in the whole run of the series, he only uses omae in a few select instances. I would argue that this is really important, subtle character writing.
Looking at the scenes, at least to me, each omae reads as progressively more honest and intimate. Each time Katsuki uses it, he is reaching for Izuku. Each time, it means more.

About that skit in ep14
I’ve read some very good analysis about the Sanematsu skit in the new episode, so here’s my take. Most people seem to agree to the fact that Sanematsu appears to be somehow linked to Osomatsu, to the extent that someone suggested that he may represent the eldest’s subconscious and his fear of moving on even though he knows he will have to, someday. Also, the interactions between the brothers are very different from usual. Not only they’re oddly nice to eachother, but there are some elements here and there that almost reminded me of their former antics in -kun. For example: -Karamatsu adressing Osomatsu with “nii-san”, which he never did in -san even though he used to when they were kids -Choromatsu acting way more carefree than usual, even getting scolded by Osomatsu for being greedy (i mean, in -san their dynamics is literally the opposite isn’t it) and being the first one to accept Sanematsu’s request to have fun togheter for a little longer (when even Jyushimatsu showed concern for this) -Ichimatsu actually smiles. A lot. Which is the cutest thing, but still something he used to do more in the past than now. -the hive mind. I know that this isn’t exactly a weird thing, but in this particular skit it seems to be a relevant element. Sanematsu supposedly lived with them for a long time and not even once any of their peculiar feature is shown, in favor of moments of their everyday life when they’re all togheter, acting as one (this may also serve as a mean to make Sanematsu feel included, but let’s keep in mind the idea of him being somehow related to Osomatsu’s feelings) -Osomatsu. He acts like a responsible big brother, making sure everyone is nice and respectful towards eachother. I love Osomatsu and I’m sure he actually is a good older bro, but I think we can all agree that this isn’t his usual way to show it. In ep2 he even stated that he aims to be seen as unreliable as possible. So this renewed dependability may be a throwback to the past, when he had… well, actually a more positive influence on everyone. Now, considering that all of this was supposed to be a brief moment for Sanematsu to enjoy before moving on… this could actually be what Osomatsu himself perceives as the most joyful scenario. Everyone is happy with their current lifestyle, they live peacefully all togheter, and they still see him as their reliable nii-san rather than “a stupid, pervy piece of shit”. Nothing actually changed from when they were kids. Even Sanematsu refers to this situation as “something he forgot”, a distant memory. But of course, this can’t go on forever and Osomatsu knows better than anyone else. He’ll just accept it eventually, and move on. This is just the first impression this skit gave me so i wanted to share it, but considering that i love Osomatsu and i love angsty theories about him maybe i’m just over analyzing too much? You may never know with this show.

Osomatsu-san favorites: Osomatsu + big brother things
↳ “Take care of my brothers?? Screw you! They’re the ones who wouldn’t play with me! I didn’t do anything wrong! And what does being the oldest have to do with anything?! We’re sextuplets! We’re all the same age! … But then again… technically… I’m still the oldest, aren’t I?”

Episode 24 of Season Two is a fucking masterpiece
Building up to episode 24 I was expecting something written with the purpose of being angsty, like a real tear jerker you know?
But what we got, oh god what we’ve received, it’s so much better than that
This episode was so much more sincere than I expected it to be- it wasn’t written to be sad: It was written to continue the the two season long arc of Osomatsu’s character development, it was written with purpose and love
And you can feel it, you can feel the love the staff put into this episode

First off, the animation is FUCKING GORGOUS in this episode
Like, this whole season has been a huge improvement when it comes to the overall quality of the art, lighting, and the overall smoothness and effort put into the animations
But this episode takes the cake
Everything is so beautiful to look at- watching them even do simple everyday tasks was euphoric
god
fuck

DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN THIS EPISODE WAS HOLY SHIT
There’s just so much continuity, subtlety, attention to detail whan it comes to parrells between shots in this and other episodes
When Oso’s walking around aimlessly without his brothers, he passes by several different locations throughout town- these places are the exact same places he saw his brothers in episode two of season one
And in the sky, in the season one episode twenty four, they’re all conected by the same moon
But in this episode, there’s no moon at all, Oso is completely severred
GOD THIS EPISODE IS SO FUCKING DELICIOUS FINALL SOME GOOD FUCKING FOOD

and finally
the most important thing of all
WE FINALLY GOT A COMPLETELY OSO CENTRIC EPISODE
FUCK ME
His development from season one is absolutely some of the most amazing character growth I’ve seen in a long time
In Season One epsiode twenty four Osomatsu is:
- violent and irrational
- closed off emotionally
- ageinst the idea of getting jobs
- doesn’t take care of himself
- most likely (because of his low self awareness) he doesn’t really understand what it is he’s feeling
- let’s decisions of others affect his life
BUT NOW, ONE SEASON LATER, OSOMATSU IS:
- Coping with stress in a healthy manner
- Openly expressing
- The first to suggest getting a job to support their father
- Is bathing, eating, and even doing chores
- Has reflected upon his feelings
- Gaining enough confidence in himself to want to make decisions seperate from the group
And even though he’s still afraid of change, still suffering from his identity complex and from dissociation, evn though he’s lonely; he’s still able to handel the failing health of his father, isolation from his brothers, and a minimum wage job
Hes the best boy in the whole world
amen

this is really goddamn long
anon asked: “How did Oso-san establish mental illnesses?”
Oh man oh man I’m so happy someone asked this ahah… its something I feel pretty strongly about! For starters, let me establish I’m focusing mainly on Osomatsu (because. Reasons) and also, none of this is 100% confirmed by staff, but this is my take on it. I find the subtlety of the issue in a gag serious makes it even more relatable tbh!!
We’ll start in numerical order, way back in episode 2 of season one. Oso finds himself home alone, which is what we can assume to be an irregular occurrence. After essentially stalking them in pursuit of some brotherly bonding time, he gets pretty pissed at their lack of interest in him. He even tells Chibita he’d rather be born an only child, which we know now to be bullshit. He acts pretty dejected for the rest of the episode, though no one really notices.
Skip ahead to episode 5’s Esp Kitty. After Ichi’s freak incident with Nyanko and his pretty obvious regret, it’s Oso who is the most understanding and brotherly of all. This could be a stretch but I think it ties in with the opposites attract mechanism in parkamatsu (and suuji, but it’s more apparent), being Ichi is afraid of rejection while Oso wears his heart on his sleeve 99% of the time. Again, just my opinion. Parka’s some good shit.
The more concrete evidence comes in at episode 9, where we really get an insight to how bad loneliness affects him. He’s definitely the most pissed after finding out about Jyushi’s girlfriend, because it’s supposed to be him getting a girlfriend, he’s the oldest, the titular sextuplet, and He’s the one who sets the example. He still does the right thing in the end, bless his soul.
There’s also the sanematsu skit. While I don’t believe in the “Osomatsu’s an only child who made up his brothers” theory, I do think it could be foreshadowing a grim result in missing his brothers so much, either at the end of Letter or Sakura.
Aaaaand then we skip ahead to Letter. What I feel about this episode has been said a million times over at this point, but basically, without his brothers, Oso doesn’t feel like anybody, and this realisation hits him like a TRUCK. Que chemical imbalance in the brain, a side effect of mental illness (most notably depression) which causes the person to lose complete interest in life, bringing up aggressive episodes occasionally. Which is fairly spot on to what we see in Oso.
On to Season 2!! Everything’s happy and light hearted again, but the kicker here is the side effects of episode 24 remain. Karamatsu’s lost respect for his onii-chan, Choro’s grown a coldness towards him, Ichi’s grown more fed up of his antics. (No difference with Jyushi or Totty, I don’t think). It’s driven home just how aware Oso is of his inability to be his own person, with how everyone perceives him. (Episode 2, his bros painting him as he’s always looked because there’s nothing special about him, and then Totoko reiterating that fact.)
Then we have another sanematsu segment. If Sane is indeed a Bad End deriritave of Oso, the whole “don’t make me say it” conversation gains some extra depth. Of course, Sane dies, which could play into Oso’s shift in gear, the Bad End is dead, avoiding another Letter incident in this season’s episode 24.
Which, of course, was the best episode ever made. Sakura proves to us that Oso is capable of making the right decision when not forced too. He’s become more self aware, he needs to make a decision that his brothers will willingly follow, a decision which will benefit his family. All looks well since he’s avoided the whole I Have No Reason To Live Without My Brothers front, but it’s given him a different problem. Without My Brothers, Who Am I?
He’s spending less and less time with his bros, more time by himself. He’s not acting as he does when around them. He’s not acting as the self he’s always known to be him, so is that really who Osomatsu is? If not that, then what? What’s his purpose now? That was probably his train of thought while he sat disassociating in the rain for hours. That’s a pretty big red flag that he’s not super okay all of the time.
I would like to think that he came to the conclusion that self-doubt like this is just part in parcel of growing up and finding your true self, and that’s what he was going to share with his brothers. BUT OF COURSE STAFF FUCKED US OVER AND SENT THEM ALL TO HELL IN TYPICAL OSOMATSU SAN FASHION. Otl.
TLDR; Staff are a bunch of smart cookies who made the seemingly most bland character into the most complex, with enough emotional experiences that make him a relatable and compelling protagonist and husband material. Seriously, if you’re like me and suffer from mental illness, Ichi and Kara are all well and good but Oso is objectively the most realistic of the lot. He needs more love. HE’S ALSO A FUCKING SWEETHEART??

Alright so, I've been thinking about S3 Ep25.
I've connected the dots.
See, the boys all made the decision to go view the cherry blossoms. They were all given a task and set out to do it. By the end, no Matsu had actually completed their task (some were more successful than others, but hold onto that thought) and decided they didn't want to see the blossoms after all.
They all ended up back at the bathhouse and they begin feeling bad about not following through with their plans. Then, Oso just says "it's fine, we can go when we feel like it".
I feel like this whole thing was a metaphor for how isolated the boys feel from everyone else.
The people who were already there at the park represented the people who were able to gain jobs and move up in the world, essentially, successful people. When Choro got there, he enjoyed seeing the blossoms, but seeing the "successful" people all around made him feel inadequate. So he left.
I think this is indicative of how the boys have tried and failed to stick at jobs before. Now let's look at the task part. Each Matsu set out to gather things for the viewing party, and it went differently for each one.
Choro was the one who was most successful in that he actually managed to gather the food that was promised, and he made it to the party. This is indicative of Choro's ability to actually do what is expected of him and follow through. Despite this fact though, he loses confidence easily and quits. This is also a very obvious tie to the fact he was the only one who managed to get a job and stick at it for a little while in S1 Ep24.
By comparison, Oso technically did purchase a single can of beer intended for the party. He then drank it himself, which could be indicative of Oso's tendency to do the bare minimum, or lose focus mid task. It could also mean that for Oso, the immediate reward interests him more than the long term reward. i.e He could have waited to drink the beer under the blossoms, but he drank it immediately. For Oso, the prospect of earning money through work and becoming successful is too far away for him to see, and therefore can't see the merit in doing it at all.
As for the others, Totty and Kara straight up did not try. They want to reap the rewards of hard work without doing any of the work. Totty is more true to himself and knows he doesn't want to try, whereas Kara hopes to get lucky and come across good fortune an easier way (the lottery ticket).
Ichi walked around the city and felt increasingly out of place, and so he went home without completing his task. Ichi doesn't know what he wants for himself yet, and he doesn't know where to start.
At the same time, Jyushi just forgot what he was doing completely. I'm actually blanking on what that means for Jyushi other than he's also unsure about what he wants, but it's hard to be able to tell with Jyushi due to the nature of his gags.
SO. The Matsus collectively failed in their tasks, and retreated to the bathhouse. It's here that Oso drops that line "we'll do it when we feel like it". At this point everyone visibly relaxes. Thinking about how this skit has been kind of reflective on each brother's ability to follow through in their promise (to work), Oso's sentiment makes them feel better.
Essentially, they'll try again when they're ready.
After this, they begin talking about how their friends are also moving upwards. Totoko is getting her licence and Hatabou has grown a little, but there are also things that are the same. For instance, Chibita and Iyami are basically in the same situation they've always been. Not everything changes, and nothing ever changes the same way or at the same time.
The Matsus just haven't reached their time to change and move forward, and that's okay. They will when they're ready.
A final note is how each bro, even though they were separate when they started out and when they decided to give up, all ended up together at the bathhouse.
It could be indicative of how, no matter what path they each may take and when, they'll always end up some place together. And I think that in itself is the most comforting.
This is the first Ep24/25 where Oso was the one most at ease.
He's found his peace in himself.

Osomatsu-san High School Timeline (Classes and Years)
So I was rewatching the Osomatsu-san Movie and I noticed a few things while crying to the credits!!
1st Year - 10th Grade
The Matsunos are all in one class, they get into their antics and daily lives together as six! They introduce themselves and they’re all p much the same person just like in osomatsu-kun where each sextuplet could be exchanged for each other.
Same Classmates, same exams, same sports class, same lunches! At first everyone found it endearing.
But then they slowly started finding it weird, this is when the matsunos realize that they should start differing themselves from each other.
And then they start distancing themselves from their classmates, feeling ostracized.
2nd Year - 11th Grade
It’s a new school year and the Matsunos are split into two different classes, (i’m gonna call them Oso’s class and Choro’s class). They start dressing differently and acting very different from each other, and Jyushi has awakened to his jyushi personality!
Season 1 Episode 17 says he has his jyushimatsu debut during his high school debut in the 10th grade, but this got retconned for the movie, where he gets his personality in the 11th grade.
The blu-ray release also has this exclusive photo of Jyushimatsu wearing his Gakuran to school. Just like his jyushimatsu debut, this got retconned from 10th grade to 11th grade. (iirc this was added post-cinema to a) add a funny memory b) explain the discrepancy between the movie and the yearbook)
Even if they have deviated from each other a bit, they’re still on good terms with each other, they go to school together, hang out when class isn’t in session and go home together.
Choro, Jyushi, Todo and Takahashi-san are all in the same class lmao, Choro allows jyushi to copy his homework and totty and choro play around while class is in session, at some point, hatabou and chibita barge into their class lmao.
Not a lot of photos of the other three, but Oso, Kara and Ichi are classmates
their class shares swimming classes with Choro’s class
Sports Festival
and during the sports festival, Oso’s class goes up against Choro’s class in the cavalry battle, (and yes they are all very good friends)
(oh btw, Atsushi and Uchikawa are in a different class from Choro’s class, and this is probably when Totoko and Takahashi became friends)
Cultural Festival
Oso, Jyushi and Todo must be either in the same club cause they’re all in the maid cafe exhibit or Oso is filling in for Choro in their class exhibit (could also be Jyushi filling in for Ichi and Todo filling in for Kara).
Kara is in the drama club as a Tree and the others + Takahashi watch him
Also unless the Matsunos are 27 years old (they were 17 years old during 2nd year + 10 years = 27) , then this moment from Season 1 Episode 3 with Jiguzo probably got retconned (most likely considering that Karamatsu isn’t even the leading role in the play, and it’s unlikely he became the leading role in 3rd year cause his confidence plummeted by then)
There are some events I didn’t cover (Like the snowball fight, trip to kyoto, cooking class, library visit, Karaoke, sports class) (most of these come from the Anan Magazine, Bonus art cards that came with the Blu-ray version and some parts i was too lazy to resize from the credits)
3rd Year - 12th Grade (Graduating Class)
I go into miniscule detail about the events of the day before graduation and the Letter and Graduation day and the incident. I’ve put it under a readmore cause it’s just too long.
But for the Year and Class they are
Oso, Ichi and Takahashi-san
Kara and Jyushi
Todo and Choro
Evidence is also under the readmore.
