okay so we've never talked about pearl and seaglass outside of discord lskdfjds... then you'll have to explain how they met and the legend of the sea-witch, their first impressions of each other you know

Okay okay okay so. There's actually two big Sea Witch legends. The one about Lucrecia and the one about the sea witch that doesn't have a name. Lucrecia's story doesn't get mentioned much during the course of the AU but is so so important to the themes of cycles repeating and cycles breaking so:

Lucrecia was a Sea Witch who used her magic to create spells for herself and others. She helped pioneer new technologies, would create brightly colored seafoam to entertain and delight—she was beloved by all, especially her sister Marona and her husband Gelsin.

She got more experimental with her magic after Gelsin's death, and went to the surface to watch the moon and stars more often. It was in this period of her life that she met and fell for a human, using her magic to follow him onto land for brief periods of time. This is also when she met Theodore Malik, owner of a successful caviar company who was very interested in mers—almost to the point of an obsession.

It's uh. It's not a happy story from this point on. Theodore convinced Lucrecia to show him how to find the mer under the waves, but this got Marona and Lazarus killed. In her grief, Lucrecia became Maligula, Scourge of the Seas, sinking ships and killing men and mer alike. Ford and the rest of his friends, who had their own expeditionary company, came out to investigate and quell the threat. And they did. They defeated Maligula, and she returned to the waves as seafoam, cementing the notion that, for a mer, going on land is "nothing but trouble."

Sea Witches weren't outright hated until the next one comes along. She doesn't have a name and might not ever get one, but what matters is thus: around the time that Augustus met Donatella, when they were both reckless teenagers in their own right, this Sea Witch summoned a Leviathan to become the new Scourge of the Seas. She cemented the idea of Sea Witches as Bad and Evil, but ran off and disappeared to the fringes after Donatella and Augustus defeated the Leviathan... which is also why Gus & Dona are King and Queen of their (comparatively) little kingdom.

Now. cut ahead even more years. That second, nameless Sea Witch? She cradle-snatched herself a baby at one point, and raised that baby as her daughter. Meanwhile the Aquatos are doing their best to keep their small kingdom flourishing, and have five children.

That cradle-snatched baby was Gisu. One of those five children is Dion. And they are going to have. SUCH a sweet little forbidden romance... though it won't have an easy start!

Anyway. To answer your question. We were trying to workshop a pretty AU name, going over options like, and I quote, "Little Mermaid AU: Extended Edition", "Little Psychonaut", "Seaglass and the Octo-babe", "smth smth brine", etc. You also threw out the potential of using pearls in some way, we realized that both pearls and seaglass work for Dion and Gisu in this AU on a symbolic level, and bam!

There's like. Potential for an interesting character note in how Caruso is constantly seeking ways to garner personal fame that focuses on him while preferring others referring to him by his last name, AKA his family name.

Anyway I think that's Charlene and Heinz Doofenshmirtz, and that's why she doesn't mind him blowing all her alimony checks on building inators. Because that's probably what their relationship was like from the beginning, and even though they aren't a couple anymore she's still "sponsoring" him because she still wants to see what weird stuff he does.

Another thing to consider for the Buzz-Caruso contrast is the fact that Caruso's main power, his glamour, is a built in lie while (especially early on) Buzz has to learn how to navigate all his new senses to discern the truth of things :]

With Rodger there's also themes of separation of mind and body too!

I've not put like. A whole lot of thought into rewriting episodes BUT "Growth Potential" would be renamed "Split Priorities" and while the A-plot focuses on Rodger learning to utilize his abilities to thwart Veloci's latest scheme at the roots by attacking multiple spots at once, there would also be a B-plot emphasizing how the team still can't work together like. at all. Because IMO it's more fun if it takes them a while to sort themselves out.

BUZZ IS SO MOTH-CODED ACTUALLY. FUZZY BODY LITTLE BUG LEGS HIDDEN IN THE FLUFF. If Max is associated with dogs and Fiona with fish and Caruso with goats in this AU, then Buzz gets moths. And other bugs too but mostly moths <3

In my mind to make his werewolf form more visually distinct from his human form I have decided that Max as a werewolf is stupid tall. Like eight feet tall maybe. Strong big dog that doesn't realize how big it is vibes. Even bigger on full moons.

Yeah! Makes sense to not have a good chunk of his employees sharing the same weakness! He'd hire other monsters if he could manage to find and convince any! And oh my godddd Veloci feeding on his own employees oh that's fantastic, he would.

OOOOO! Witch Moynihan is so fun and interesting, was Rump always her familiar? Is he as old as she is? Since vampires I unaging Moynihan was likely turned at an older age, meaning she lived a whole life before getting turned... which begs all kinds of interesting questions about what she got up to. I bet she was a wild teen.

HE WOULD HE WOULD HE WOULDDDDD but also. Consider: Moynihan and Veloci having a more complicated relationship. Consider: Moynihan acting as a mentor to Veloci, helping him grasp his new form. The two of them having been friends, once, mentor and student, maybe even enemies to friends if Veloci was, say, a vampire hunter Moynihan turned in self-defense. Consider: if Moynihan's been alive for at least a century (probably more tbh), she's probably gone through a lot of phases in her life. Maybe even some morally questionable ones. Consider: Moynihan having all kinds of mistakes in her past that haunt her, having a storied history. Consider: Moynihan and Veloci as former friends turned sour by their differing goals and inability to reconcile them.

YESSSS EXTRA DETAILS IN THEIR HISTORY!!!! Moynihan had to develop her cure somehow!!!

YES YES YES YES EXACTLY. SHE'S OLD LET HER BE OLD LET HER HAVE A HISTORY LET HER HAVE MISTAKES SHE'S MADE AND SECRETS SHE'S KEEPING AND OLD SKELETONS IN HER CLOSET. LET HER HAVE INSECURITIES AND DOUBTS LET HER BE A FULLY ROUNDED PERSON YES YES YESSSSS

Buzz. Buzz already has that to a degree, he just needs to figure out how to parse it among all the other different senses he has. I could also see Caruso developing mild empathic abilities in a "in order to tempt and manipulate others I need to know what they're thinking" way wayyyy down the line mayhaps.

And then uhhh some extra thoughts I've had about this AU:

The mannequin Buzz puppets for his human disguise was sourced by Caruso, though it was Fiona and Max who came up with the idea. When Buzz pops out of it he's able to sort of fold it up and store it away until he needs it again through the sheer magic of Convenience™.

Rodger can detach his head from his body just fine, but his head won't be able to talk because it has no lungs to push air through his voicebox! Joints are easiest to detach and reattach, but really any part of his body can be broken apart and put back together.

Caruso keeps up his skincare routine, even if his glamour means he's always at 120% pretty. He likes putting in the effort and enjoys the process. He does end up having to adjust parts of it though to account for the species change. Immaculate grooming also doesn't stop him from getting demon parasites early on :[

Early on Fiona's okay enough on land but clearly has some trouble keeping damp. When an argument between her and Caruso goes too far Ms. Moynihan assigns them both specific tasks to help the other out with their problems. Fiona solves Caruso's parasite problem with a flamethrower (he. did not know he was fireproof before she blasted him.); Caruso ends up making a sort of wax-like prototype "fish moisturizer" (his name for it) to help Fiona keep from drying out out of water. This would probably be an episode B-plot.

Your thoughts and ideas for the Monster Squad AU 🤲 I want to hear them

TBF my main thoughts are just vibing with everything you've posted so far, I won't lie. Some highlights that I absolutely love include (but are not limited to):

The Buzz&Caruso dynamic being a metaphor for unabashed queer liberation versus respectability/assimilation politics.

Fish monster FIONAAAA LET'S GOOOOO (I love it when the one female character of the group gets to be just as weird and gross as the guys instead of having to be pretty)

You're adaptation of my idea of Rump being able to shapeshift/match the kids' monster forms being a side-effect of swimming through the ooze with them! Inspired!

It was a lot of back and forth but I absolutely love what we landed on for Rodger's monster form being a two-in-one, and I feel like that creates a lot of potential with the Smart One of the group being half brain with no body and half body with no brain, having to learn how to make his two halves cooperate in order to get things done and using that to draw comparisons with scientific collaborations and how sometimes very different people with very different skill sets have to find ways to work together for the greater good, but in this case those people are one guy. It could also create a lot of great existential horror of the "I'm not in control of myself" kind without the animalistic instinct angle that usually gets thrown into those kind of stories.

Your description of Buzz's transformation in your longer monster squad post makes me thing of a moth or butterfly coming out of its cocoon with I think is particularly apt for a character who loves bugs!

Werewolf Max, my beloved! (I have loved the idea of werewolf Max since long before we started making this AU, which is why that was literally my first suggestion when it started lol)

I also have a few additional thoughts.

The idea of all Veloci's employees being his coven/thralls, but I imagine only the higher-ups in the company, like Peter and Agent Alpha, are actually vampires themselves, and the rest are just working for Veloci on the promise that he will eventually turn them into vampires. Of course, he sees them mostly as a convenient blood supply and an obedient workforce.

Moynihan being a witch before she became a vampire (which is why she gets an animal familiar and Veloci doesn't), and I also like the idea that she would have been turned against her will, perhaps by a vampire who wanted revenge on her.

Veloci, on the other hand, really really really wanted to be a vampire. He probably went through SO many manipulation tactics, biding his time as he coerced her into thinking turning him was her idea, and as soon as she did, he immediately betrayed her. It's probably Moynihan's biggest regret, or at least up there.

The squad aren't the first of Veloci's test subjects Moynihan took in—though in the past they've all been animals. It was those past test subjects that she used to develop her cure. The Squad are the first subjects she hasn't been able to rehabilitate and return to their natural forms. And to her, they're a sign that Veloci is getting dangerously closer to his goal.

In general, I like the idea of Moynihan having a much greater sense of foreboding in the Monster Squad AU than she has in canon. She feels responsible, she feels afraid, she feels inadequate, but she has to suppress these feelings for the good of the kids.

And then I think one of the kids should discover empathic abilities and learn all these emotions she's been hiding from them, in the process realizing that the situation is actually a lot worse than they even knew.
