        kh3 au where as the story progresses, sora & kairi can see & feel hiko even before he gets a vessel because their hearts have connections to him, too. he still kind of. latches onto riku and becomes a part of his heart, but sora did know him & made a powerful connection with him at one time, and namine and kairi have a strong bond due to her being part of kairi’s, so it’s not too much to imagine that they would have an indirect one, too.

        so many of his memories had been implanted and false to their very core; who was to say that the idyllic sunset-bathed islands were any different than the friends that had never existed in his heart at all? rather, it was the other way around - he’d never been a part of theirs, though several of them had attempted to welcome him into their circle of connections. it was a kind gesture, but one he felt the need to pull away from all the same. 

       he’d wanted to extend that same kindness to namine - to fade from everyone’s peripheral gradually - but found himself unable to do so. he’d wanted nothing more than to see her again for so long, and now he found himself faltering and stumbling, unable to say much else than the lightest of small-talk to avoid wounding her. he sat down beside her, inhumanly still, unsure of the new vessel he’d been granted. unsure if he deserved it.

       “ but it’s almost as nice as i remember it. almost. ”

        a small headcanon that hiko is slowly getting all of his memories back post-kh3. being part of riku’s heart, and holding a connection to it, ‘healed’ it, in a way. any memories that were taken from him in castle oblivion are returning. namely, he remembers larxene taunting him and proposing the idea for false memories - and how he rejected it, and was subsequently ignored. he also remembers namine ‘shattering’ his fake memories and awakening him to his reality - that he was fake, and his memories were too. it’s often very disorienting, because he’s remembering being various ‘versions’ of himself, and each of them had experienced their own unique brand of pain.

        “ i know. but they’re - comforting. something i held onto when darkness tried to claim me. ” he admits, discomfort washing over his skin at the admission that he’d fallen to shadows - more than once. it was something he’d taken pride in and erroneously believed to be his strength in oblivion. that, and his misguided anger at riku, had ultimately been his downfall. the false memories were a sort of anchor to keep his heart tethered to the realms of light...

        ... but perhaps it was unfair to still keep them so close, when most of them were of namine - someone who he’d never really known. “ ... you never got a say in being important to me, though. it wasn’t fair of me to act like those were real, just because i wanted them to be. ” she had been his entire world, but when that world was shattered, so had his heart. he was piecing it back together, now - but it was slow, and the jagged edges of him caused pain in the same instance of healing.

       he hesitates, standing deathly still as he dared himself to ask; “ i’d like to get to know you. the real you. if you wanted. ” he’d done so much in namine’s name, when that was all he really knew about her -  her name.

       “ mm-hmm. i believe you. ” he says in a tone that suggests he does not believe him at all. 

“LOOK, I CAN ROAST YOU, BUT I’D FEEL BAD ABOUT IT!!”

        a surprisingly good-natured  laugh. “ it’s okay, shiro - you tried. ” he sticks a gold star sticker to his brother for good measure. “ i’m thoroughly devastated. ”
