Some fun information about squirrels!!
Hello, this is my first blog, prolly just gonna put in random facts and mini-essay stuff about animals. Though maybe in the future there's going to be different stuff. So here is some random information about squirrels. Specifically the red squirrel. Also while I do use scientific facts this is far from a scientific paper since this was made in only roughly 3 hours or less. i will maybe in the future post different stuff btw since im not really sure but i think for now its going to be a mix of shorter and longer termed foresty facts.!!
Etymology!! XD
(just something about this account I am autistic and a special interest of mine is linguistics so this is a required linguistics segment of the essay)
The word squirrel can be generally derived back to the old Greek words shadow: skia, and oura: tail. The words are brought over from vulgar Latin to French to then old English.
Identificiation!!
They lose their coat twice a year and their fur and ear tufts are ticker in the winter. they generally weigh around 250 to 340 grams(8.82 to 12 ounces).
Oh but, where do they live??
I'm glad you asked!!, they generally live in Europe and Siberia. In southern and western parts of Europe, they generally live in broader-leafed boreal forests. This is because the amount of food that's accessible to them is often higher in these forests. Meanwhile, in northern parts of Europe and Siberia, they often live in pine forests.
Diet
They generally eat nuts and seeds but they also eat some more stuff like:
flower buds
mushrooms
insects
They also very sometimes eat small birds or animal materials but that's very rare.
Excess foods are put into middens. Middens are storages from squirrels. They're either buried in dry dirt to make sure the seeds don't hatch. or they're put into holes in trees.
Nests
Their nests are generally 6 meters in the air roughly 30 centimeters in diameter and made from twigs. These are lined with moss grass and bark. While squirrels are solitary creatures they often lend nests, especially in winter.
Reproduction, AAH scary!! /j
Mating occurs during late winter and in summer. This means that the females can get up to two litters a year. The litter averages 3 youngs called kits. The pregnancy lasts roughly 38 to 39 days. When they're born they're, hairless, blind, deaf, and helpless. At 21 days they gain hair. Their eyes and ears open at 3 to 4 weeks. and they develop their teeth at 42 days. They leave to go on their own at 8 to 10 weeks. They die at around 2 to 3 years old. But they can get up to 7 very rarely.
But now the question is, how does it happen??
Females generally produce odors that the males then spot. Then the males chase the female for UP TO AN HOUR!!!!!!! Until eventually the strongest male gets to the female first and gets to mate. And I thought cishet men were creepy.
Fun facts!!!!
Survival is positively related to the amount of seeds in the area that hatch in autumn or spring!!
In some cultures, albino squirrels are mythological creatures that symbolize change!!
If the squirrel forgets where a midden is they often help plant trees in a symbiotic relationship
That's all, this was really rushed but for a first blog it's… okay (also my ambition was just way too high tbh.
BYEEE XD
