Designing the post-COVID19 city Postgraduate students from the MA Architecture + Urbanism at the Manchester School of Architecture present research and design which responds to the transformation of architectural and urban space during and after the global pandemic. Possible future urban situations in a range of global locations are drawn from direct observations of cities, and the behaviour of the diversity of their inhabitants. This work will lead towards the RE-WORK symposium to be held during rescheduled Venice Architecture Biennale in Spring 2021 MA A+U Staff Eamonn Canniffe / Dominic Sagar / Mazin Al-Saffar / Antonio Blanco Pastor / David Chandler / Johnathan Djabarouti / James Dyson / Ewa Effiom / Julie Fitzpatrick/ Colin Harwood / David Johnson / Demetra Kourri / Kaija-Luisa Kurik / Curtis Martyn /Claudio Molina Camacho / Aissa Sabbagh-Gomez / Tamara Salinas-Cohn /Yun Wu

The title: Small nuclear entities - a 20-minute city
Location: Shanghai
Faced with the impact of the epidemic on the city, we found that public infrastructure (such as medical care and public green space) in Shanghai is still insufficient. To reduce risk, our cities may need to become more localised and self-sufficient in the future, not just in food but in access to day-to-day amenities. Small nuclear entities can be created in the mega-cities like Shanghai, and each nuclear entity has all the resources inside. In a 20-minute city, almost everything a citizen needs, from shopping to healthcare to exercise, is within a 20-minute walk or bike ride.

TITLE: Public balcony

When the city was lockdown, Italians were eager to socialize. They drank, danced and sang with their neighbours on the balcony, which made me think about the balcony activities. Therefore, I propose a public balcony that could address people's psychological loneliness by providing them with the possibility of temporary activities during future coronavirus outbreaks. This design takes 2*2 as the design unit to meet the social distance. And the units can be combined through the APP to create various social activity space. It can also be attached to the different building and grow with the city.
