headcanon that merry and pippin are regarded as the shires heroes because they took the most active and public roles to save it, but if anyone so much as implies that frodo didnt pull his weight, or that he was just sick at farmer cottons house the whole time the shire was at battle, or that it was his fault for selling bag end in the first place, merry and pippin are like "dont you dare; frodo baggins is a greater hobbit than you or I, or anyone else we will ever know, you have no idea what hes done for us. you cant imagine the depth of his sacrifice. you will NEVER speak badly of him again." and of course merry and pippin are Huge and Intimidating by hobbit standards so they are keenly listened to

a reason why tolkien is honestly in a league of his own in fantasy is because he does worldbuilding through poems… he doesn’t NEED to write a thousand stories about dwarves because the song of durin says it all. he doesn’t need to expand tediously on elves and melancholy because the song of the sea is right there!! it’s so beautiful
