fascinating thing about sinners is how absolutely doomed the narrative is.

like okay if sammie hadn't gone to the juke joint, remmick probably wouldn't have shown up. but then the klan would have. okay smoke took those assholes out solo, if it was him and stack maybe they could have handled it. well the juke joint would have shut down in a month because no one had any real fucking money because of the sharecropping scrip. not to mention two seperate mobs are on their way to fuck the twins up (what do you MEAN you robbed al capone??). okay maybe they covered their tracks, well they're still in the fucking jim crow south and stack and mary have a cool 35 years until loving v virginia so best case scenario is he's broke and watching the love of his life from afar until he's 70. plus annie implied the twins were on borrowed time anyway since she'd been quietly protecting them the whole time they were gone.

idk it both adds to the horror that there was no way out and just solidifies sammie saying it was the best day of his life, like that one little perfect moment was all they were going to get anyway

Not to date myself - but I am on my way to turning 30, and I just felt like writing down the things I have been ruminating on about my 20s and what 💪 we 💪 learnt????

#30 Don't be friends with energy vampires and don't be an energy vampire friend!

Over the last couple of years I have distanced myself and gotten accidentally distanced from a few friends. And while it absolutely sucks to lose friends... it's also been freeing? And I think one reason is that I have had friends who, due to personal, social, professional, or political reasons, have not been able to a) be wholeheartedly happy about and b) wholeheartedly support my success and happiness. If your friends can't be happy for your decisions regarding your career, relationships, choices re. parenting, lifestyle, or goals, it is not good for you to have them in your life. This doesn't mean they are bad people, or jealous of you - it is just that different people have different lives and sometimes they are not compatible. Or sometimes one friend may be doing something that, say, runs counter to your politics. I've been in that position myself, I have had friends who have made life choices which seemed to me more conservative or politically unethical than mine, and I realized that the best thing to do is distance myself, instead of being in their life and radiating judgemental vibes. Its great if you can have conversations and coexist despite having different lives - in fact its ideal - but if it doesn't work out, don't stay in the friendship and be hostile. Secondly, it is totally normal to be jealous of a friend or feel like you deserve what they have. I've been there too. But again, if someone is projecting their problems on you and using your life experiences in twisted ways to form their thoughts.... it's not healthy. You deserve friends who nurture your success and ambitions, and who want to help you make that happen. Don't be friends with someone you can't be your full self with... simply because it won't work out in the long run. And if you are friends with someone who rubs you the wrong way just by being themselves or expressing themselves, even for things disconnected from you, the fairest thing to do is let them go.

everyone has been saying nasha was the only person to not ask mickey what it was like to die, but no one is making the connection that she didn’t have to ask bc she already knew. on presumably 3 or 4 occasions, nasha held him as he died an agonizing, horrid death. she was the only person who even thought to give him comfort in those moments. she’d never ask him how it felt, she knows.

need to string together my thoughts more on this but reeeeeally interesting to see the influx of media - severance, the substance, mickey 17 - centered on the idea of a double/expendable iteration of yourself.

the dehumanization of workers by the way of non-livable wages, unsafe working conditions, and identity based discrimination (and the current removal of dei initiatives), all drive a wedge between our personhood and the value we are prescribed as a member of the workforce. something something the effects of ai and deepfakes already putting people in danger, the way we live and present our lives online vs in reality, there’s a lot to unpack here. but it’s fascinating to see this trope so widely translated as a storytelling vehicle for these ideas, and that this is the story that people are interested in telling.

And we thought we lived in two different realities but actually one of us just succeeded in following societal rules and one failed. And it didn’t make us any happier but we’re still jealous. So now I am simultaneously the wolf and dog and the lamb and Caine and Abel and Pollux and Castor. Because this divide simultaneously protected and smothered each other. And we hated and envied and pitied each other and refused to see that we are the same person but we are and things would be better if we just accepted this but we never will and no one else will and if anyone did see all these parts of us and loved us anyways we would push them away. And this will only ever end with both of us dying but we were never really alive anyways. Okay now what if I was a worm
