Past me thought that my winter training would be much more hardcore than it has been. I stretch, do PT exercises and go outside pretty much everyday, but the energy to push myself on long trails and steep inclines is just not here. I’ve never deleted/reuploaded an app as much as I do IG. For now this is how I’m managing my time here. . I’m doing the #52hikechallenge again this year. I don’t have the year neatly wrapped up. I don’t want to forget about even the worst of 2020. Nothing will be magically fixed tomorrow anyway. It’s okay to take time to process and grieve. It doesn’t mean we can’t look forward, or hope and work for a better tomorrow, as individuals and as a collective. My priority in 2021 is to take care of myself so I can better take care of others. Here we go again. By late winter, I will have forgotten what it feels like to look up and see leaves in the trees, The call of fresh snow won’t pull me out of bed early on a Saturday morning, And I’ll miss the feeling of the warm summer wind on my skin more acutely than I do now. But this is still early fall and last night when the clouds cleared to reveal a blanket of snow on the mountains, I knew I would make my way up there in the morning. It was early enough that my steps were the first ones on this less popular trail. Slowly winding up between the trees I felt this stirring in my chest, the one that pushes me out of my comfort zone, the one that tells me ‘go on an adventure!’ It’s been buried deep in 2020. A survival strategy: I can’t miss being on adventures if I have no desire to go. Still it shows up occasionally, like wisps of smoke I have no control over, filling my lungs one minute, overpowering, and gone the next. . . .
