More Luke Newton acting praise:
The contrast between how sincere he makes Colin come across when he declares his feelings to Penelope, even in the super dramatic dream sequence and the absolute bullshit insincere fakeness when he’s flirting with ladies of the ton he cares nothing for is SO good.
He makes Colin look smarmy and cheesy and fake, when it would’ve been so tempting for an actor to try to just play it straight so they still come off as suave and cool to the audience. But it’s Colin at his least cool, because he’s just bowing to peer pressure. It just feels like the braver choice to make it seem just as false as it should, and hope the audience is following along. It’s Luke playing Colin playing a role that doesn’t quite fit him.
It creates a level of separation for the moments when he’s with Penelope and he’s not trying so hard to impress her. His performance of Colin is so much more grounded. And then when he’s trying to get across all of his feelings to her and the facade comes off and all of his stress and anxiety and hope comes out because she just has to know how he really feels???! When he lets himself be vulnerable and at Penelope’s mercy, the sincerity soars off the screen. You get the feeling like if Penelope turned him down in that moment there’s no telling what he would do.

UPON CLOSER INSPECTION
IT IS HIS MIDDLE AND RING FINGER HE DOESN’T USE
Kinda blurry but
HE USES HIS THUMB TO PULL THE DRESS UP AND POINTER FINGER TO MOVE THE HAIR
COLIN DID IN FACT SPIDER-MAN HER
THE RING. THE RIIIIIIIIIING.
( @dollypopup you inspired me to investigate…)

i could spend hours talking abt how wonderful it is to see such a great representation of how relationships should work in order to be healthy; so often in books and movies we see the “damaged” boy who loves the “perfect” girl and bc there’s affection between the two of them she’s expected to heal him by acting like his therapist and i think that it’s so refreshing to have a female character who knows her worth and who understands that the only thing you should do for someone you care abt is be there for them when they do the work and a male character who understands that he’s not ready to be with the girl yet bc he knows that a relationship with him would only hurt her and bc of that he actually wants to work on himself without ever expecting her to do anything so they can finally be together. young girls deserve more couples like kaz and inej so they can grow up knowing that they should never settle for less.
