Okay I channeled my inner @alexandra.reid88 event planner extraordinare and pulled of a really nice Pilates social for the people at South Common Community Centre. I launched this class 2 years ago and the SAME PEOPLE have come every week since. They are so strong it’s amazing to watch. When you build community around your classes, people will continue to show up even if the class is tough and they fall out of love with you! I will be returning the stolen Christmas tree now. We came, we chilled. We worked. We laughed (at Kevin and Brenda posing for a video- Lol). This weekend, some of my best digital Pilates friends became my real life friends. My man, Kevin @pilatesdwell had his grand opening so we converged on East Lansing MI to show him some love. Sonja @commandofitnesscollective and founder of @blackgirlpilates from NY was in the house and her beautiful people came in support as well. Nicky @bodyincolor from Chi-town rolled in too. It was a reflection of the NEW way the 1) black community supports itself. 2) the pilates community does not look at your lineage, but rather your passion for helping people to move pain free and with joy. Thanks for the love and support! We had a great time in my session yesterday. I only wish I could have stayed longer. I taught and then dashed swiftly (ahem) to Niagara for @natenation_14 basketball🏀tournament. That being said, the City of Mississauga is passionate about its mission to have more people being active more often. To support that mission, they are massively stepping up the game by equipping and empowering fitness professionals affordable CECs and certifications. This is reason number 1233566665331 why I love my city. 👇🏾 I was humbled and honoured to be a presenter at the land meets water conference for the City of Mississauga Recreation division. I did a lecture / workshop called PT meets Pilates. We examined the origin of Contrology and the contrast to today’s fitness culture After doing the classical mat repertoire, we discussed cueing and how we can get sharper with all of these tools to help our city get fitter! It was amazing sharing the day with women I believe are icons on the Canadian Fitness Landscape. Janice Hutton and Libby Norris are authentic leaders. Today truly was a blessing. Thanks again to Brenda DeCoste and her team for putting this together as well as all that were there to get better! Joseph Pilates actual job title on his landing documents to the USA: Director of Physical Culture (I love that and might used that title one day). #throwbackthursday On Monday, I had the opportunity to coach a Pilates session to the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams at the newest Basketball Prep school in the Greater Toronto Area. These student athletes are special. The coaches are full of vision and passion for cultivating men and women who will see success on and off the court. 🎖There were 27 people here and based on how easy it was to teach these hungry ballers, I thought it was less!!! Pilates can be the missing link to power generation on the court and muscle reparation off the court. I look forward to more life-giving moments like this. I had a great time!! It is astonishing the number of cues go in to the thigh stretch to make it work. These athletes are fighting through knee issues and I would not EVER give it to them unless we had done weeks of movement prep, and muscle activation around the problematic areas. They both wanted to try as they were “feeling good” today. The problem with most athletes is they use their strong muscles and neglect the ones that don’t comply. Instead of running from problem areas, dive in, refer out to experts in that specific area (I surround myself with people wayyyyyyy smarter than me) and keep charging forward. Deep in the back corner of one of @Lili_viola amazing reformer classes (one of my fave to pop in on on Fridays), there is a dude in an orange shirt getting his hamstrings mangled by Chris Robinson @s6fitness. Meanwhile, a new apprentice watches with compassion and listens to my groans for mercy. Zoom in to see the real struggle of Pilates (slide 2 and 3). Chris was working on loosening up my left hip and working length into those tight and weak areas that plague my movement patterns. Chris’ eye, wisdom of the body and years of experience training under Romana and Jay Grimes among others sets him apart from other coaches. When one person doesn’t show up the next man celebrates... Today, we made the focus of Fitz’s workout his leg extension and inner thigh engagement. We make the connection through multiple different exercises so he can feel the relationship of his core to his lower body. This has improved massively over the past year, but in his words, it’s “better, but not good!”. I am also incorporating the @hyperice into our movement prep before getting into these exercises to foster greater muscle activation and mobility. The Hypervolt is a great addition to my practice especially for 71 year old dudes that still go to Judo and hold the title of athlete of the year in their high school back in the day!!! 🙋🏾‍♂️Here is my thought for the day: If you can keep the distance between what your athletes used to do “when they were young” and what they can do now at a minimum, they will keep coming back. The margin between where they WERE and where they ARE can be discouraging. I got some work done in the Lab this morning before starting the Friday morning cadence of Starbucks and Martin Time. The kneeling side kick series is no joke! To the on-looker, you would think this is pretty basic. As I go through the mental checklist of long spine, back connection, powerhouse engaged, reaching through the extended leg to the crown of my head, resisting any rocking in my static upper body, while the lower body is dynamic... sweat cometh! I may have taken a break from social media for 3 weeks but my athletes take no days off. In the traditional style, Mr Pilates would have multiple people on various apparatus working on their skills. Today, Anthony is working on length through his legs and proper back connection from his powerhouse, while Fitz also focuses on that two way stretch as he works through teaser progressions.
