What I thought about yesterday is how Taylor's biggest successes have often come from her being unwilling to compromise even when conventional wisdom is telling her she should compromise. Refusing to compromise is something she talked about a lot with 1989, but this masters situation is the similar. So many smart business people over the years would given her the advice that she should just settle for one of the deals to own the masters with the strings attached. That it is just part of doing business. Taylor on the other hand was uncompromising in her desire to own her masters without any strings attached and now she done it. As she said in her letter that is exactly what she achieved, and she would not be in this situation if she had just settled for one of the previous offers.

yes! she is so headstrong about what she wants and what lengths she’ll go to to prove herself right and see things through. it is also a rare case of the value of something increasing solely based on who owns it. this catalog is worth more in her hands than it ever would be elsewhere. and it bucks a broader industry trend - i keep thinking about this quote from the NY Post:

But for Swift, that wasn’t enough. At a time when many artists are selling their catalogs for major money — from Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan to Katy Perry and Justin Bieber — ownership meant everything to her.

This was personal.

And while it’s not something that every act can afford or demand, it certainly makes a strong statement about the fundamental right of being in charge of the music that you create. For Swift, you can’t really put a price on it — and she couldn’t just shake it off.

As a woman especially, Swift felt bullied by the men in the industry who didn’t take her seriously enough and sought to control her. She took a stand against them that, with her enormous influence, greatly impacted and emboldened her largely female fan base.

As a businesswoman, Swift has always been savvy. And now this will be as much a part of her legacy as becoming the first artist to win four Album of the Year Grammys.
