When you were first pitching BCG, what kinds of things stayed the same, and what kinds of things changed over the course of the production? Also, do you have any advice for pitching series to companies in general?

Oh man, these are big questions. Here’s my abridged version…

Shane and I actually pitched a different series to Disney BEFORE Big City Greens. This was back around 2013. We were in development for about a year and a half before it was killed. Maybe we’ll post stuff from it some day…

Long story short, Disney asked us to come up with something else and after a lot of soul-searching we realized we could take the core theme from our first project and repackage it in a better and more entertaining way. So we pitched Big City Greens (originally called Country Club) and went back into development more focused than ever before! We knew EXACTLY what we wanted and were better equipped to navigate the very rough waters that is TV development.

To answer your question, there are always changes when developing anything. Tilly originally looked horrifying, Cricket’s name was Bucket(!), Shane and I gave Gramma a sword late one night out of stupid frustration. So many weird and fun discoveries happened along the way in development but the most exciting developments come once the series was green-lit. Our incredible writers, directors, and storyboard artists contribute so much to every episode. Gloria went through massive changes! Same with Remy!

I have a lot of advice about pitching but here’s some top-line thoughts:

• Try to get some kind of production experience first. You’ll learn so much from being on your first production and it’ll only inform your own pitch. 

•Make sure you know 1.) Who your characters are (What’s their perspective on life?) and 2.) What’s their relationship to each other (What’s their perspective on each other?) Everything else (the world, the style, character design, etc) is secondary.

•Development is like dating. The studio should want you as much as you want the studio. Date (pitch) around! There needs to be a mutual relationship with the development execs you’re pitching to. 

•Know exactly what you want and be firm in your direction BUT not so much that people hate you all the time.

•You’re pitching yourself more than your idea. Ideas are a dime a dozen. You need to be an idea-generator who can execute those ideas better than anyone else in the room.

•Be a boss. Even in development, you’re the show-runner. So run the show.

•Keep in mind that you’re asking a studio to invest millions of dollars in your idea. Make sure you act like someone who can be trusted to make something great with that money.

•MOST IMPORTANTLY be willing to walk away if your project is being turned into something that you don’t want. Your goal can’t be “to get my own series.” Your goal needs to remain “I want to make good stuff.” Whenever someone wants their own series so badly that they’re willing to compromise anything in order to achieve it, the audience ends up hating it because its a soulless product driven by focus testing and the fear of failure. Stick to your guns. Make yourself happy first. It’s the only way you can be creatively fulfilled.

HOW TO BUY LOW-COST GLASSES

If you are like me, you are low income. It doesn’t matter why, but you are and sometimes you need things to prevent your quality of life from dipping too much. Like a decent pair of eyeglasses.

Zenni Optical was brought to my attention by one of the residents at the clinic I interned at. The staff is remarkably skilled and it was my privilege to be able to work with them for 300 hours. Anyway, they serve many low-income folks and, instead of them sending them to their optician to look at frames, they recommended taking the up to date prescription and plugging it in at Zenni to get a good pair.

What you need

Your eyeglasses prescription. Get it however:

Dig it up from your paperwork

Call the last place that did your exam and pick it up

Pay for a new eye exam, decline fitting, and take the paper

Your pupillary distance

This is likely on your script somewhere. Look for “PD” and the number behind it. Otherwise, try this.

Here’s what you do:

Make an account at Zenni.

Plug in your prescription. I won’t go into the details of why and how scripts are written the way they are and how cool it is. Just plug in the values exactly as you see them. OD (ocular dexter) is the right eye and OS (ocular sinister) is the left. Sphere, cylinder, and axis for each.

You can also order prescription sunglasses! Just make to order a regular pair in whatever frame, import the prescription you plugged in, and choose Add Standard Lens Tint. 

I recently order my sunglasses because my eyes are going to boil out of their sockets. Took about a week. Came with a lens wipe cloth, PD ruler, and a case. Lenses are accurate and the frame doesn’t feel cheap or unbalanced.

I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!

President Donald Trump once again unleashed what’s become his presidential hallmark: a bizarre, winding, threatening press conference, this time following his White House meeting with Democratic leaders Friday to try to break the impasse causing the government shutdown.

In a long, meandering briefing in the Rose Garden, Trump told reporters the partial shutdown now heading into its third week could go on for months, even years, if Democrats don’t give him the $5.6 billion he’s demanding to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The Democrats have steadfastly refused. The shutdown has affected some 800,000 federal workers — 420,000 of them forced to work without pay — since Dec. 22.

“This is national security we’re talking about,” Trump said. “We’re not talking about games.“

When asked if there was any “safety net” for workers going without pay as the shutdown continues, Trump responded: “The safety net is going to be having a strong border.”

Trump also floated another way he could get his wall: declaring a state of national emergency over border security to build it without congressional approval.

“I could do it if I wanted,” Trump said.
